I was the primary supporter of Crowder's value around here this offseason, arguing that he had 95 solo potential. That argument was based on two factors -- likely huge tackle opportunity and a lack of a solid surrounding cast. It was not based on a strong feeling that he was a stud linebacker talent.
Through two weeks, those lofty expectations looked reachable. Crowder's team was behind and getting solid tackle opportunity and he started out on an early pace for 120 solos. Two weeks later, the Dolphins have been controlling games and limiting tackle opportunity (19 rush attempts in last two games) and Crowder has fallen off to an 80 solo pace. The three man front has been adding tackles, Roth has been a much better all-around player than anyone could have expected and Yeremiah Bell continues to prove his worth in the box. Crowder is going to need that opportunity to have consistently good value -- he's not particularly instinctive and he's not a stud sideline-to-sideline talent.
The real Crowder probably lies somewhere in between. He was around the ball frequently yesterday and he was used in pass rush often. He's probably going to end up pushing 90 solos, which makes him a up-and-down LB3 type. If the Dolphins continue to play this well on both sides of the ball, Crowder won't have the LB2+ value I expected.
It's a common IDP rub. Chase suspect talent with good opportunity and you may get burned if the opportunity dries up. I wouldn't throw Crowder away yet, but he's no longer a clear every week starter if you've got comparable options.
