I don't remember this degree of transition at the QB position. The fate of a franchise can hinge on QB play. It seems the competitive balance of the league is being reshaped in a brief interval.
Andrew Luck shocked a franchise with his early retirement. Philip Rivers and Tom Brady both look long in the tooth. Sam Darnold actually missed time with mono. The Giants moved on from Eli and Mariota was *finally* replaced. Injuries took their toll on Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford, Nick Foles and Andy Dalton. It wasn't all bad... Ryan Tannehill found a home and became the latest member of the "Life after Miami" support group.
Of course, all this change has fantasy implications. Who is throwing passes to Juju or DJ Moore this week? In 2019, long established QBs were displaced by Gardner Minshew, Kyle Allen, and somebody called "Duck Hodges". Look down the road a little and how much longer will Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers suit up?
Of course, NFL teams with next generation QBs are well represented in the play-offs and well positioned for the future. But how about the teams and their supporting casts that are in transition? Which teams draft a QB in 2020? Chargers, Bengals, Patriots? Which players will be most impacted (for good or bad)?
My initial thoughts...
AJ Brown - Can you imagine this guy paired with a top QB? Even with Tannehill locked in at QB. the Titans run first approach may keep him from his full potential.
JuJu Smith-Schuster - Probably took the biggest value hit as we got a glimpse of life after Ben, with some injuries and the emergence of other players thrown in...
Courtland Sutton - Remarkably consistent as Elway and the Broncos keep their QB carousel rolling. A definite rise in value and could flourish with some stability.
Terry McLaurin - see "Sutton, Courtland"
Keenan Allen - Proven beyond any of the previous players but the Chargers seem ready to move on from Rivers. Maybe a lost, transition season?
