Where to stay in San Francisco (1 Viewer)

Wife and I will be there for 4 days and we are searching hotels. We don't need anything fancy but don't want to stay in a dump. We are willing to stay farther out and drive in each day but our concern is, can you park in the city for a full day if you aren't staying down there?

If we do stay in the city, what areas should we stay in that would give good accessibility to points of interest? Public transportation an option?

If we stay outside the city, can we reasonably commute into the city and spend all day down there while parking somewhere?

There's a bayside hotel in Oakland that is significantly cheaper (Best Western). It says it's 10 miles from the city. Is that doable?

No clue if this info is still relevant but there's a place called The Wharf Inn right by Fisherman's Wharf. I stayed there many years ago and was very surprised at the value for what I paid. No fancy for sure but great location.

Lots of places to park in downtown SF. For $50/day.

SF is a town I never drive in. Stay close to the action. Walk. Taxi. Bart. Ferry to Sausalito. If you want a car for the day to go to Muir Woods or a longer trip that's cool. Just don't pay for parking. My 2 cents.

This is my concern. Parking. Although if we save 100 or more a night staying outside the city it may be worth it.

What dates? If it's a prime month (like October), events (fleet week, conventions, football games), etc the rates are New Yorkish for sure. I'd go to betterbidding.com and work Priceline or Hotwire to get the hotel class and location you want. I got a hotel in New Orleans that was almost $400 on their website for $196.

i think you can get some decent value from kimpton hotels. i like the sir francis drake, prescott, and serrano. union square is farily central to everything, plus it is a small city.

You want the vibe of the city. Not to be at some sterile Hilton Garden Inn 20 miles outside of it. You'll lose so much time commuting back and forth with a car too.

Are you driving or flying in? You don't need a car in the city and hotel parking around Union Square will be $40-50/day.

If you're driving up and are stuck with a car, there are hotels on Lombard that have free parking. Some South of Market do as well but the neighborhood may put some people off. The hotels are nothing fancy but they're better than wasting your time commuting in from the suburbs.

Hotel tax in SF around 16%.

budget? $$/night?
Variable. We are also going to Napa and up to Mammoth Lakes area. We were just a but surprised that a decent hotel started at 300/night in SF.
Are you driving up to Mammoth Lakes after your stay in SF? Its about a 5 hour drive one way from Oakland. You might consider staying North of San Francisco (Petaluma/Novato). Traffic won't be bad driving into town on a weekend and you are closer to Napa.
