Where were you? Kurt Cobain Edition (1 Viewer)

This thread will likely turn sour, but whatever...

Do you remember where you were when you heard the news that Kurt had commited suicide (or was murdered, for you conspirists) ? I figure a good chunk of us were in our teens or close when Nirvana was at its peak, and I remember being completely enamored by them.

I didn't shed any tears, or go hysterical like some people I knew... But I remember being super bummed.

We were having lunch at a local KFC during our lunch break at school..... the shop owner had a radio in the back and we heard it announced. Remember the rest of my day being pretty ####ty. Kinda laugh at that now, being affected by a death of someone I never knew/met... but that music was a big part of my life.

was on my way home from somewhere...school i think. none of my friends had a major meltdown or anything, but like the OP i remember feeling very bummed.

I only remember where i was on 5 "major events"

9-11

space shuttle explosion ...The first one not the last one

OJ bronco

magic Johnson hiv retirement speech :bag:

Jordan first retirement :bag:

No idea where I was and didn't really care at the time, aside from your garden-variety bummer that somebody killed himself.

Having my '87 Honda brakes turned at local shop after having a rather unpleasant disagreement with the asst. mgr. at Midas because the regular mgr. was at lunch. I brought a pb and baloney sandwich and sweet, thin BBQ chips from home and read the August '88 Reader's Digest they had in the waiting room. Also bought a Diet Mt. Dew out of the slider bottle machine - 35 cents #####es.

a real fan

I was at work, I think, that part I don't exactly remember. But I do remember discussing it shortly after the news broke with a guy at work who knew someone in Cobain's management team and that for days they (and Courtney Love) had been frantically trying to find him after he left the rehab facility because they were scared to death he was going to off himself.

I remember those and:

when Reagan got shot: came home and my mom was crying.

when John Lennon was killed: I was watching the Dolphins on MNF.

Wasn't a huge fan but do remember. I was taking a shower and had radio on, they had played a couple of Nirvana songs in a row which was unusual for the station, DJ came on and gave the bad news.

Was about to finish up my first year of college. Was driving home with a friend, I think for the weekend. Or maybe it was spring break. Don't remember. Heard it on the radio.

I heard it on the radio as I was driving into the parking lot at school. The weird thing to me is that I had heard about John Candy's death (exactly one month earlier) in the exact same way. So now whenever I drive by my old school I end up thinking about John Candy and Kurt Cobain.

I was driving back to college when I heard Aaliyah died in a plane crash. I had to pull over for a few minutes I was so upset.

I was in the office at my first job just out of college. My boss came to my office to tell me when he heard it on the radio. I remember the moment like it was yesterday.

I find it hard to believe that you of all members don't remember your exact geographical coordinates at the moment of impact.

you articulate sob
There's your problem. I wasn't a teenage girl at the time.
would you have been more upset if it were Billy Corgan or Al Jourgensen?
No & who?
Aren't you from Chicago?
What do you mean by "from"?

I remember exactly where I was...IIRC it was a Friday and I was driving to church b/c it was Good Friday and we had an afternoon service (got me out of school for the day :excited: ) I was super bummed. As soon as I got there, my best friend asked me if I heard and I did. Pearl Jam played SNL the next night and I forget exactly, but Ed did something in Kurt's rememberance (I think it was a t-shirt)....but it was definitely a moment that I'll remember forever.

For some reason, I didn't go see Nirvana when they came here, but after Kurt died, I remember telling that same friend that I was so glad I was a bigger PJ fan than Nirvana and that I'll have more times to see them.

I was in my apartment at Vista Way (apt 2707) on the Disney College Program. Just left work at Pecos Bills and was drinking with my roommates. I wasn't a fan, but I didn't mind them. My roomie was a big fan and it hit him really hard. For the rest of us, it just gave us an excuse to drink more.

Vista Lay.....

Don't really remember hearing the news, but saw Pearl Jam that night and they covered Teen Spirit. At least that's how I remember it.

ETA: the concert was on 4/8.

EETA: and the play list from that night doesn't show the song. They did cover Rockin' in the Free World though.

Not really a "remember where you were" moment.

I do remember coming back from class and the idiots down the hall playing Nirvana on their oversized stereo even more than they already did.

If it was 20 years ago yesterday, it was my 11th birthday party. So I was probably either at a roller sharing rink or on a golf course.

Yeah, in my college lounge. Wasn't surprised, at that point, didn't really care too much. I don't remember anybody really caring too much, other than "####. That sucks."

The trade mags tried to make it a generation-defining moment more than anyone else, IMO.

Aurora Colorado. Living with a little multi-racial stripper gal. We were banging, the news came on and she wanted to cry. She did. I saw no reason to let that break my stride. I finished. She was angry. I napped.

It wasn't a "remember when" moment for me, but I do remember thinking negatively of him for abandoning his wife and kid.

Good music though.

Was the 5th when it was announced or when the time of death was listed as ?? I guess I can look it up. Thought it was a bit later. Like the 8th of April.
He died the 5th, the body was recovered on the 8th.

Death certificate goes down on the 5th, so that's when it's "celebrated"

Interesting to think about how many of us heard about stuff like this on the radio. I rarely listen to the radio anymore and can't think of any major news I've learned from it in many years.

Driving in my car on the way to a party store to get cigarettes and a mountain dew. Sat in the parking lot and listened for a few minutes before I went in.
