Even though Oakland has played against tough defenses so far, they just look horrible. Lamont has zero catches, after 70 last year. They haven't scored a TD. They've given up 15 sacks. Four mishandlings of the C to QB snaps in one game. That has nothing to do with the defenses that they are facing, that's personnel. The play calling is atrocious. But I feel the area that they need the most help (aside from Al Davis handing over control of the team) is the OL. They've addressed the OL in recent drafts, but the draft picks just haven't worked out. Gallery was the right pick at the time. They were looking at 15 years of Pro Bowl blocking up front. What happened to him? At current pace, they will give up 120 sacks this season. It doesn't matter who they start at QB (Brooks, Walter, Tui), the QB can't complete a pass with defenders constantly trying to rip his head off.
And the Jerry Porter situation... I heard Greg Papa (Raiders play-by-play announcer) on a morning sports talk show (it was either Bruno or the Rise Guys on 1140 KHTK, I can't remember) saying that the reason Porter isn't playing is because he plays the same WR position as Moss. They are both WR1 players. Currently, Moss is the WR1. You would think that they would play Porter opposite Moss as the WR2. But instead they want to spread the field, so they use their speed guy Alvis Whitted for that position. And Ronald Curry occupies the slot receiver. So unless Porter can beat out Moss in practice or the Raiders start running 4 WR sets, Porter isn't going to get in. This sounds like a bunch of crap to me. Shell doesn't see eye to eye with Porter and his pride and hubris is more important to him than putting the best team on the field.
I am in no way a Raider fan, just a Bay Area resident, so the Raiders dominate the airwaves.
