I know about the military industrial complex but I need to do some research on the other two—as I’m generally pretty fascinated by this kind of stuff. Just off of title alone—could there be some cross over in regards to the military and scientific ones?

What was the warning about education?

From Eisenhower's farewell address:

"In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been over shadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

It is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system-ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society."

Ahhh I always read that as directed towards the scientific community but you are right that does include education since they are linked. Probably more higher ed and I was thinking K-12 since that’s my world. Unless you have a different reading?

As someone in the business, the military industrial complex is an absolute behemoth. Frankly, much of the political tail wagging doesn’t benefit the troops as much as the contractors and stock holders. They’ve done a fantastic job of having enough jobs in enough districts to make decreasing or “Right sizing” virtually impossible.

This seems touchingly quaint. I think I would step over my own mother to be governed by a scientific-technological elite. That would be practically a utopia compared to being governed by an assortment of scientific-technological mediocrities.

I had to read the address to find out what quick-hands was talking about, so I'm no expert, but I think you're right - I think he means higher education.

This is an interesting line, because while the Jobs/Gates narrative has been modified a bit there is still the enduring image of 15 years after Eisenhower these solitary visionaries working in a garage that absolutely revolutionized computing. Hey, if you hit 1 out of 3, you still make the Hall of Fame.

Then so is every doctor, lawyer, MBA, judge, accountant, etc. I think people are much more a reflection of their upbringing, time and place than their college education. It certainly is impactful but I don’t think it changes at the core who people are or what they believe.
