Which surprise stud- receiver would you rather have? (1 Viewer)

BothAustin and Rice have put together back-to-back impressive games. It seems thatboth may be the real-deal.

Who would you rather have and why?

I think I'd rather have Austin because Crayton was never that good and Williams has failed to live up to expectations. Meanwhile, Favre has 3 receivers of seemingly equal caliber to choose from. Right now Rice is getting the most attention, but it could just as easily be Berrian or Harvin.

Plus, the Vikings are more likely to rely on the running game.

Both Favre and Romo seem to lock on to these guys and both look to be good from here on out. I like Rice more and Favre will throw it up to him. The guy was uncoverable against Pitt and could have had alot more. I'm not sure if Taylor was on him but someone got torched.

It's also worth noting that Austin torched the chiefs and now a banged up falcons secondary. I'm not trying to take anything from him but it's something to keep in mind. He's like a YAC machine though.

BTW I dropped Austin earlier this year but lucked out and was able to snag Rice. Funny how things work out.

I'm definitely bias as an Austin owner but I really would rather have him due to QB and team situation. The Cowboys NEED a WR to step up and Romo's go to guy and Austin is doing that.

The Vikings have weapons and the best RB in the league and they play in a weak division with teams that AP can run all over later in the season. Favre will only throw if he needs to...........

There's no arguing the Cowboys play in a tougher division and will always "need" to throw a lot more than Minnesota.

Austin will get more consistent looks on a week to week basis IMHO.

I read or heard somewhere (or thought I did - - - BUT I could be wrong or daydreaming) that Rice was compared in some respects to Larry Fitz and that he also trained with Larry Fitz this summer!

I was able to pick up Rice this week and played him yesterday with great results. Seems to me that Rice may be more of a consistent player whereas Austin will be hit or miss JMO.

Rice is the better physical talent. That's who I always go with.
This is a tough call for me, but for the reason you prefer Rice, I prefer Austin. He runs crisper routes. Merrill Hoge has a segment on ESPN today where he details just what a great route runner Austin is. He got a little bad rep because Romo and him misread a play early in the season, but I've watched that several times and felt Romo was in error, not Miles. He is faster, quicker, more explosive with and without the ball than Rice. He is physically stronger and breaks more tackles. Better RAC and a nose for the endzone every time he touches it. Rice may have better hands. Both have the ability to make freak grabs with hops and body control. Rice may get preferential treatment in the red zone that Austin doesn't. Austin has had his bye, Rice hasn't. I dunno. I've been a Rice fan since he was a freshman in college, and I always expected him to emerge as a WR1 in the NFL, but Austin is the better physical talent. I pimped him back in 2006 as a UDFA, and I strongly suspected his physical freakishness would translate, so I'm not totally surprised by him. Either way, they're both emerging #1s on deep versatile offenses who will soon be getting a lot more attention from defenses, so I'd temper expectations some going forward. Neither can sustain their current 2 game paces.

How badly injured is Berrian? Any updates?
Per Rotoworld:
During a radio interview Monday morning, Bernard Berrian said he hopes to play at Green Bay this week. "That's the plan," Berrian said. The receiver missed the second half Sunday after injuring his left hamstring. In the preseason, he injured his right hamstring and missed three weeks. It would be a surprise if Berrian was at full strength in six days. Oct. 26 - 11:09 am et

I'd rather have Rice. He was targeted over 15 times yesterday. It's pretty clear he's Brett's number 1 guy now. I don't buy into the idea that he won't have as good of weeks because of Minnesota's running threat. I think that means he'll almost always be single teamed as the safeties will be keying on Peterson. Brett's already stated that if he sees Rice 1 on 1 he's gonna throw it whether he has a step or not. I think he'll get 10 targets a week from here on out and that's a guy I'd like to have.

  not really.they pass quite a bit..

who has the better QB and the better RB?

Rice.

Favre >> Romo.

ADP >>>>>>>>> Barber+felix+Choice+ anyone else.

Romo is too shaky to be relied upon

Harvin drops too many passes, and he's always hurt. Berrian is always hurt.Shiancoe has his head screwed on loosely.

Rice is the only sure thing in Minnesota's passing game..and he's done it against some of the NFL's better pass defenses in consecutive weeks: Ravens and Steelers, while Austin has done it against KC and Atl...

Austin isn't sneaking up on anyone, he's got everyone's attention now..so defenses will shift coverages towards him, forcing Roy Williams to beat them.which, of course, he can't.

Rice is a stud.sell high on Austin

I've got both in a dynasty league, and don't trust either yet to start over Colston/Marshall. Maybe I'll start looking at match-ups more closely.

I think both have the potential to put up WR1 weeks, I am just not sold on the consistency yet to be every week starters.

Minnesota has a lot of weapons - on the one hand it means Rice is likely to see a lot of 1-on-1 coverage, which he should do well in; but, on the other hand the ball has to be spread around a lot, and when they are winning, it should mean more Peterson/Taylor than throws to WRs.

Dallas - Not sure how the defenses have matched up against Austin - how will he react to being a number 1? When he is doubled will he still get targets? Will he make the catches? I don't know. But, he is a big play threat, and obviously capable of a long TD at any time.

Long term, I think both can be WR1 - but they both have to prove it a little bit more before they become must starts every week.

I drafted both this year, but dropped Miles before he exploded, and he was dropped again by another team before he exploded. I'll blame the FBG love for that turd Michael Jenkins.

At this point, Rice is a must start and will bump Housh from my 3rd wr spot with Colston and Jennings. And Jennings better watch his ###.

Did you watch the game yesterday?
Um, yep, watched it all. Favre threw plenty as most teams find they "need to" against the Steelers. 18 carries for 69 yards is a pretty typical RB game against Pittsburgh, so therefore Favre NEEDED to throw yesterday like I said.In his horrible division though against teams like Detroit, Chicago, etc. he'll be less "needed" to throw since they have one of the best RB's in the league on their team.

If you look at the games where Minnesota didn't need to pass, they didn't pass much. Also, Shiancoe is as much a sure thing as Rice, especially against bad teams.Week 1 vs Cleveland - Favre for 110.

Week 2 vs Detroit - Favre with 155.

Week 3 vs SF - miracle comeback where Favre had to come from behind - Favre with 301.

Week 4 vs GB - close, high scoring division matchup - Favre with 271

Week 5 vs STL - Favre with 232, high yard receiver was Harvin with 66.

Week 6 vs BAL - Extremely tough game with miracle Favre comeback - Favre with 278.

Clearly there's a trend that when Minnesota can relax and not throw very much, they're happy to do so. I also heard a stat that in the games that are well in hand, Favre is very happy to throw to Harvin and Shiancoe. It would make sense that he's happy to just dump off and pick apart a bad D.

Lately, they've have very challenging matchups and had to go to the air quite a bit. I think it is fairly clear from the numbers that Minnesota will happily put the passing game on ice when they are well in control.

I only do Dynasty leagues and I own each of these guys in a league so I'm equally biased for these two. Both have good TE's and little else for the QB to throw to. Williams is underachieving big time, Crayton sucks, Harvin is still more gimmicky than he is a legit WR concern and Berrian has been mediocre. ADP may be the best RB of all on both teams by far, but Dallas is running the ball better than the Vikes. Dallas is 4th in rushing yards as a team and Minnesota is 12th in YPG (153 yards to 120, respectively).

One thing I have to wonder about Rice is this. Who will throw the ball to him next year? Will he get the same number of looks as he does with Favre? Rice has been in the league a couple of years and done little or nothing with other QB's. Some could argue that Romo's days are numbered in Dallas if he doesn't do better late in the season and in the playoffs. But I think it is much more likely that Romo is throwing to Austin in 2010 than Favre throwing to Rice.

I like Austin better simply because I see the situation as more stable than I see Rice's. But I only do dynasty leagues.

I have both and both their games were actually televised here for both weeks.

They're very different WRs. Rice is tall, lanky, great body position and feet near the sideline, and AMAZING (like, seriously) ball skills. Austin is stronger, harder to bring down, runs better. This is a hyperbolic comparison of course, but think Randy Moss vs TO. On a side note, was I the only one who, when watching tall and thin Rice pluck balls out of the air near the sidelines wearing a purple jersey, was reminded just a little bit of Randy Moss?

I think they're both well-suited for their offenses. Favre has no problem heaving it, and Romo has no problem throwing short and letting Austin run with it.

Statistically, it'll just be a question of matchups. I think Rice will be more consistent since he can always go up and grab balls, while Austin might need a few breaks to catch and run long, but Austin might have more blow-up games as a result.
