Which Teams Will be Looking for a RB in 2009 (1 Viewer)

Now that we're past the trade deadline and far enough into the season to make a reasonable guess at how teams might see their situations, which teams will be in the market for a legit #1 RB via FA or the draft in 2009?

Set Already:

49ers - Gore

Rams - S Jax

Cowboys - Barber and F Jones

Washington - Portis

Vikings - Peterson

Chicago - Forte (at least for 2009)

Panthers - Stewart and D Wil

Falcons - Turner

Raiders - D Mac (at least for 2009)

Dolphins - Brown

Bills - Lynch

Titans - Johnson/White, no reason to draft RB for 4th straight

Jags - MJD

Steelers - Parker and Mendenhall

Ravens - McGahee

Could Stand Pat:

Giants - continue with RBBC?

Cards - are they willing to roll with Hightower and Arrington if Edge is finished?

Packers - will they have faith in Grant in 2009 if 3.5 y/c continues? Does Jackson get a shot before they go outside?

Saints - probably willing to ride Deuce/Bush, but what if Deuce is done? Can Bush handle the inside/bell cow role?

Texans - is Slaton really the answer? At least for 2009?

Colts - probably set with Addai, consider it my bias that they're in this group

Lions - what does new management think about Kevin Smith? Would they cut bait after only one year?

Should be ISO:

Chiefs - definitely not too early to look for LJ's successor, probably not on the roster today

Chargers - could it be?!

Broncos - if Torain's not the guy, do they try again or ride a RBBC for a year?

Patriots - can Maroney anchor a RBBC? What do the Pats believe about him today?

Bengals - don't buy Benson or Perry are the answer, but they could hold steady for 2010

Browns - do they really want to go into next year with only Lewis?

Eagles - do they go for the eventual Westbrook replacement in 2009, or 2010?

Jets - can they milk the TJ/Washington duo for another year?

Definite Need:

Seattle - not sure what the question is, but Jones and Morris are not the answer

Bucs - could go with Graham and Dunn again, but almost have to bring in a #1 even if so

And since we're here... any thoughts on the known FAs that will hit the market? Early guesses at who the 1st day RB draftees will be?

I think the Eagles are fine. Buckhalter looks like he can replace Westbrook.
While I guess you could make that argument that he has less wear and tear, Buckhalter is a year older than Westbrook. I don't think he can be seen as the running back of the future there.

I'm no Baltimore homer but I don't think Magahee is set.
As long as he's healthy he is.
Yeah...everything looks set alright.
MaGahee may not be set as a feature back ( or he may be ), but with Rice and McClain the Ravens are definitely on the low end of teams I believe will be looking for RB help in the offseason. Maybe a late round pick if BPA mandates, but I doubt we see them go after anything of substance.

Bucs - could go with Graham and Dunn again, but almost have to bring in a #1 even if so
I don't see why they need to bring in a #1, Graham has shown both productivity and versatility in the past two years, and perhaps Caddy comes back and produces. I could see them bringing in a couple of guys to fill out the roster but targeting a #1 back seems unlikely.
Jags - MJD
Might decide to continue with a RBBC and bring in a Fred Taylor replacement (though MJD would likely be the primary carrier).

While I don't think either can shoulder a full load, I've been impressed with both Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith. Edwards has seemed like the kind of guy that wants to give it to one back 350+ times though. So, you could see those 2 splitting carries next year, and I think they would be effective. However, Edwards might push to have a workhorse brought in. Lastly, I don't think Herm Edwards should be the coach next year, but they haven't even hinted at the idea of letting him go.

Teams I believe will be seeking RB help next year:

Jets — TJ on the wrong side of thirty and has bee a disappointment.

Browns — Lewis is running out of fuel.

Broncos — the current stable of RBs are injury-prone and unreliable

Patriots — Maroney has been a disappointment and the remaining RBs are on the wrong side of thirty.

Bengals — Benson has been a surprise but I do not believe he is the long-term answer.

Seahawks — Current stable of RBs are inconsistent

Possible shoppers:

Chargers — LT winding down

Buccs — Gruden's love for RBs is exceeded only by his love for QBs

Cards — Hightower is solid but in need of a backup

Eagles — Westy a stud but durability is always an issue

Redskins — Portis ≠ stud but SA is not a long term answer as a backup

There is a very strong group of RBs available in the draft again this year if the juniors declare, and some of them will land in great opportunities. The Jets, Seahawks and Browns situations bare close monitoring.

Detroit will (hopefully) focus on the other glaring needs in the draft and not draft a RB. The current stable of Smith and Johnson will be just fine if they can improve the OL and the entire defense.

That being said, it would be no surprise for Smith or Johnson to be replaced. Smith was only a 3rd rounder. And I don't know the contract term for Johnson, was it only for this year?

My gut says Green Bay doesn't think Grant is an issue. They'll point to his health and the O line play as factors.

As for Brandon Jackson, I don't think he's the future at all. So, Green Bay may be looking to add some RB depth. I do like Kregg Lumpkin a lot, though he is on the IR right now.

I think the Giants will continue to go with a RBBC approach and I wouldn't be surprised if that committee consists of Ward, Bradshaw and Ware. Jacobs could wind up being the answer to one of these teams who are looking for a current and future RB.

Ahman Green will be a likely cut and gone from the Texans next year. Chris Brown may or may not be kept.

I would expect the Texans to bring in a guy to compliment or at least spell Slaton either in FA or the draft. My guess would be a more between the tackles, bigger, bruiser type that would compliment Slaton since he is more a of a speed/outside type.

While it may appear that the Pats should be on the list of teams looking to make a move, I'm not sure they will. They will probably poke around and see what's out there. However, I think they will do what they have done recently . . . looking for a lower cost back that might fit a specific need or role but not someone that is making a big splash to be a primary guy for big money.

NE is currently in the Top 10 in rushing attempts, yards, and TD so the RBBC they have been using has been somewhat effective. LIke most years, what they lack in talent they typically make up for in volume. (They usually are in or near the Top 10 in rushing yards but are bottom 10 in ypc.)

So fantasy wise NE may still be perplexing next year. I do agree that there does not seem to be a long term solution in the RB corps as constituted but if Brady comes back and the team goes back to running a vertical offense they may not look to invest much initially.

David, do you think they could add a player like Kevin Jones? He hasn't gotten many touches in Chicago this year with Forte coming out, but IIRC they were interested in him before the season and he'd at least be fully healed from the ACL in 2009. Actually, wondering if Tampa might make another play for him as well if Caddy can't make it back.

The teams that I would rule out making a heavy push to acquire an rb (whether through a contract or high draft pick) are the Vikings, Titans, Niners, Cowboys, Bills, Eagles, Redskins, Falcons, Rams, Panthers, Dolphins, Ravens, and Chargers. I feel that those are 13 teams are more or less set at the running back position into next season.

The Pats have liked Jones ever since he came into the league. They brought him in this year for a tryout but obviously didn't sign him. If Jones wants to sign a short-term deal for low dollars and be in a RBBC I'm pretty sure they'd take him. But I doubt Jones would want that.

Anyone else think LJ will be available this offseason? I could see him restructuring his contract if he gets traded to a contender

The problem being that he would have to get traded under his current contract and then renegotiate, meaning that he would have to fit under his new team's salary cap at the time he was traded with his inflated salary.

And the new team would have to have a lot of faith that he would actually finalize the re-negotiation once they acquired him.Seems to me that the only way LJ moves is if he's cut, at which point he wouldn't have a contract to worry about.

I always find it hard to guess what the Pats will do as any trend you look at seems to reverse in a year or two, but I am a little inclined to think they would go for a primary back (250+ carries a year) if they could get one. Dillion was that guy and then the drafted Maroney in the first who seems to disappoint them. Their RBBC the past two years seems more of a by necessity ploy than a strategic plan. I would think that a guy like D Ward could fit their plans well. Hes versatile and he will probably not have huge sums thrown at him (though I would expect a couple of substantial offers thrown at him if he finishes the year healthy, and my best guess is the Giants would prefer to keep Jacobs).

I would bank on LJ being cut if no trade agreement can be reached, in fact, he'll probably ask for his outright release.

Benson is the future RB for Cincy, a former first rounder finally finding his legs on another roster, ala TJ.. :lmao:

he's doing well considering he's playing with a backup QB.

add a healthy Palmer and a new coaching staff and Cincy will be a playoff contender next season..

Early guesses at who the 1st day RB draftees will be?
Hard to say at this point. Here's Mel Kiper's Big Board as of yesterday. I'd say it's safe to include Knowshon Moreno and Chris "Beanie" Wells at this point. For now, it looks like Ringer is the lone guy.
