I have Transformer and think you might have played out your VU records. But that's my own personal preference. I like Lou's really early songwriting, but not so much post-Velvet solo.
You’re probably right. After listening to VU for so long it can get a little played out. I’ve also been listening to Nico’s solo Chelsea Girl a lot lately and John Cale Fear. That band had so much amazing songwriting.

I was half-serious, half-kidding, and forgot the emoji wink. I agree with you about the songwriting. True precedent there for rock n' roll moving forward.

You know you're good when a bunch of your one-off songs from a particular period in time are gathered together, released as a double album, and it seems urgent and good.

I'm tempted to buy the Velvet Undergrounds 6 CD Box Set of their 45th Anniversary of "Velvet Underground." Not sure, but I think I'm going in. Dip my toes first in some 1969, then go in.

It's three different mixes of the LP, a disc of outtakes and live selections from the Matrix Tapes (but not all the Matrix performances which are on another box set).

The Complete Matrix Tapes are on Spotify.  All 4 hours 30 minutes including a 37 minute version of Sister Ray.

Thanks. I think the 45th box set is also on Spotify*. I was really talking about purchasing it for posterity's sake when Spotify may no longer have it so readily available.

Of course, the world needs 37 minutes of Sister Ray...

eta* The box set is not on Spotify. Only the studio versions of the songs that would make up the 1969 record, or something like that. It's fragmented. I just checked again. I like the 2014 mix of that record on first blush. Huh. There are actually a lot of included songs from other releases on that and the Loaded box set, which Spotify has in its entirety. Interesting.

The Velvet Underground influenced thousands of bands but not many as heavily as Hoboken's post-punk lifers The Feelies.

The Feelies have returned the favor by releasing a VU tribute album called Some Kinda Love. It's a live recording from 2018 and it's pretty good for what it is. Eighteen songs including some usual suspects along with deeper cuts.

have always loved the Feelies.... thanks for the update.

Totally random but would be fun to do a "best band in the world" by year ranking (nod to Bill Simmons of course). Is 66 Beach Boys, Beatles of Dylan? Pet Sounds vs Revolver vs Blonde on Blonde. That is a real tough year. 67 is maybe VU even if they had almost no real mainstream traction.

Think there was once a series of polls that asked “what was the best album released in XXXX?” Feel like it ran from 1960 up to around the 90s. But that has probably long since been archived. Was a fun one and probably time for a redo.

That is cool but I suppose this could even be bigger than best album- like was there a great tour or multiple albums or something else significant tied to it? IDK, just an idea.

This is great. The After Hours/Oh! Sweet Nuthin' end was sweet. Love the Feelies. I see they still play live on the East coast once in a while. Keep hoping they'll come back to Chicago someday.

I somehow missed this thread when it first appeared. I love all of their albums. But if I had to choose give me The Velvet Underground from 1969. It’s the strongest collection with some achingly gorgeous ballads.
