Whiplash - Overrated Flick (1 Viewer)

Great performances, photography and editing. The pace and energy were really excellent. That said, the plot was ridiculous and predictable and the entire premise of the movie was ludicrous. The whole Charlie Parker story as a leaping off point really bugged me since any jazz student would know that Parker never had a cymbal thrown at his head in the first place, rendering much of the teacher's whole fear based teaching methods completely moot. Clunky writing bothers the hell out of me and Whiplash was littered with it.
Whether or not that actually happened was irrelevant if the kid believed it happened. Just sayin.

I think he's saying that the kid was a student of jazz and thus would have known that the story was untrue.

It is fiction, but it is based a bit on the writer/director's experience with a professor at music school. Many people have encountered ####### teachers and coaches like this. Also, he lied about damn near everything else, wouldn't it be just like his character to tell the Parker story to justify his methods?

The car accident scene is the one thing that i think should have been done a different way. Maybe not have it quite as severe, but have the car incapable of getting him there?

It is no more predictable (but at least there were still surprises at the end like the "oh ####" moment when they play the song Andrew isn't prepared for) and over embellished as most typical sports movies. Don't get it when people gripe that this is so unrealistic.

Thought it was great.

Sorry if there weren't enough animated exploding robots for your liking.

I understand where the OP is coming from. I agree that all actors involved did exceptional work.

But the storyline as been countless times before as it's basically "Rudy" but done with an

orchestral background instead of a football field.
Lol Rudy

Even if that is the case, how would he KNOW it's untrue? I have a feeling he would trust his acclaimed teacher more than the fact that he hadn't heard that story before.

Unless there was a day in class where specifically mentioned that this rumored story was not true, how on Earth would be KNOW that it isn't true??

..and Andrew doesn't seem like the type of guy that pays much attention to non-drummers. I would agree with the point if it was a story about Buddy Rich.

What I am asking is, does Google specifically say this is an untrue story? Cause if the guy tells a story that you can't find online, does that mean it didnt happen?

Just saying, seems a silly thing to be bugged by.

I don't know, perhaps we should Google it?
