White Sox Offseason (1 Viewer)

I know many Sox fans have ripped Kenny Williams this off-season, but I think he deserves quite a bit of praise...

He has added Orlando Cabrera, Nick Swisher, Octavio Dotel, Alexie Ramirez(Cuban SS), Scott Linebrink, and Carlos Quentin. Thiese players should all be an improvement over the players they are replacing. Losing Garland isn't going to help, but he isn't a special pitcher by any means.

If Danks/Floyd step up, I think they are in the hunt come September. I like the new bullpen(I believe last year's version blew 30+ games), and the offense should, in theory, be significantly better. The AL Central isn't a joke, but this baseball, anything can happen...

With that being said, I'm hoping Kenny Williams jumps all over that Angels deal involving Konerko and Kendrick, if it is on the table. I'm guessing Josh Fields will start the year in AAA, barring a Crede trade, and I believe he would be a fine 1B given a full spring training at the position.

80-85 wins is probably a safe bet...if Dye/Konerko/Thome can stay healthy, and Contreras/Floyd/Danks pitch to their potential, 90+ wins is likely. But I may be biased :lmao:

This is a bit optimistic, considering 2 of your starting pitchers are named Danks and Floyd, not to mention Contreras is really closer to 80 then 30.

No doubt, but I think Danks will be as fine #4 starter. Jose Contreras, as always, is a big question mark. If he regains his form, there are few better, but that may be asking too mutch from a 50 year old. Floyd, on the other hand, has shown me nothing that suggests he has what it takes to pitch well in the big leagues. If the Sox are in contention come July, Williams will probably make a move for a Livan Hernandez type... :bag:

Colon v2.0?

Bartolo Colon has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement with the White Sox and is taking a physical. The White Sox are believed to have offered Colon a one-year deal with a low base salary last month. It didn't interest him at the time, but he probably couldn't do any better after a rather unimpressive showing in winter ball. Colon would compete with John Danks and Gavin Floyd for two spots in the White Sox rotation. Source: Impactodeportivo.com.do Related: John Danks, Gavin Floyd, White Sox

He, and his 6+ ERA, should fit in just fine on the South side. This could be a great pickup, if he can come close to duplicating his 05 numbers..................HUGE IF

I like what the team has done in the offseason. It is no secret that I have just absolutely trashed Kenny Williams for that pathetic 2007 stink fest but any kind of move is better than the train wreck of last year. It is obvious to me that if Danks, Jose and/or Floyd can step it up and perform well we might be able to contend. I am hoping that we can learn to bunt this year. AJ will need to improve on his defensive game. Crede must come back healthy and contribute offensively and a leadoff hitter will have to be established. Dye and Paulie will need to come out of the gate and put up some numbers. The schedule looks crazy especially September. If we are out of contention by July- Kenny boy will be packing his bags!

Odd move for both Colon and the White Sox. It doesn't seem like a good place for a flyball pitcher like Fat Bart to work in and the Sox aren't really one arm away from the top.

Probably the best scenario for all would be for Colon to somehow stay healthy until the trading deadline so Kenny can flip him for a prospect.

Odd, yeah... but I do believe this move gives them a legit shot at contending in the division if the tub of lard was on the Roger Clemens training program this winter...Floyd is probably a middle-reliever, at best, at the MLB level, so it certainly helps....I mean the guy did win the Cy Young Award two seasons ago...but I'm certainly not holding my breath hoping for a similar season...

Nevertheless...

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said the team has reached no agreement with Bartolo Colon and hasn't even talked to the right-hander in weeks. ...

Anyone have any insight into who would be the best player that we could acquire if KW deecides to part ways with either Crede or Fields? Another starter? Prospects?

Local reports from SF media have been that Crede would only bring prospect(s) in return. The Crede for Lowry rumors have died down.

I think it is in the best interests of the Sox to let Crede start from the get-go and prove his '06 wasn't a fluke. He brings gold-glove defense, and was hitting over .300 and providing excellent power before his back started acting up at the end of July...

The return would be minimal at this point...and I don't think Fields has what it takes to man the hot corner...

Yes I like Joe's defense. When the ball is in his mitt you are going to be thrown out 95% of the time. There is a nice article up on the Sox homepage today disclosing his ordeal with the back surgery. I am looking forward to Ozuna helping out as well. He is a good player when healthy.

It's funny, I was looking at the White Sox lineup today and it doesn't look that bad.

Cabrera and Swished should be decent additions, but god their pitching sucks. Bullpen is better than last year but that's not saying much.

3rd place and 80 wins isn't out of the question.

Someone will step up in the rotation. I was listening to the Score and there was talk about how Jose was dealing with a back problem all of last year. Claims he is close to 100%. While I agree that the starting pitching looks rough after Mark and Javier, it has been a silver lining for the Sox for years. I am going to miss Garland's innings but not that sullen mope like attitude. I think the only time I have ever seen that guy smile was when they won it all.

Contreras was going thru a nasty divorce too.Sox really need a 2nd baseman. They must really like Richar

I'm interested to see if Alexei Ramírez is part of the puzzle there

 And wtf are they going to do with Uribe?

^Maybe he is just part of a throw in if they deal Crede or Fields? Have to believe that a trade is probable before the start of the season unless Crede has a setback...

i always assumed that he would be part of a sign and trade type deal. but i guess we will see.... i dont know how you sox fans can stand that guy.

He was a big part of the Championship run but he just fell out fast. Last year he was just basted here on the southside. The Cabrera trade alone was a move that just peaked some forgiveness with Kenny Williams with me (for now).

Crede already had a setback. He was hit by Mike "wild thing" MacDougal and is on the shelf for a few days with a bruised hand. God he sucks at pitching now.

It's baseball man anything can and will happen. I don't think 85-90 wins is out of the question if we get good starting pitching. The bullpen looks like its nails and the lineup is pretty solid also. I like our chances.

how do sox fans REALLY feel about Ken Williams? does winning a WS really forgive how bad hes really been?
He really dropped the ball last year but I think he gets the free pass based on the WS win in 2005.
I'm pretty sure you called for his head last year..........so, now he gets a pass?
Not from me. He should have been gone July of 2007...

Kenny Williams is a damn good GM, imo...he makes some ballsy trades, some of which may or may not come back to bite him, but I like his style...if his current re-build fails, he is probably gone, but I think the team is pointed in the right direction...

Nice to see that Steve Stone will be doing the only thing he's qualified to do for the White Sox

Steve Stone on your Sox radio dial

No matter how badly the White Sox play this year, the radio broadcasts WSCR-AM 670-AM will at least be entertaining and interesting with Steve Stone replacing the intolerable Chris Singleton to work alongside the underrated Ed Farmer. Heard the news Tuesday on the Mike North Morning Show. Singleton apparently is going to ESPN as a "Baseball Tonight" talking head, and I'm thinking, ESPN must have a void at guys who have the speech pattern of a pinball machine. No matter. Singleton is gone and the smartest man on my radio or television is going to keep me company on a regular basis. At least until Stone buys the Cubs.

SOMEHOW THE ####### CUBS SCREW THIS UP TOO!!!!!

Seems to me that you thought he was nothing more than a "blow hard"?

Ramirez continues to look good.

Atta boy Mark- looking to be in good shape

I was happy to see JD come around as well and even Limp's guy Anderson has looked good thus far.

Big Jim is looking to get his groove and the SBs are starting to mount on AJ. Will teams run on the WS this year?

If we get good starting pitching from 3-5 and the bullpen is as good as advertised the Sox will give people a ton of problems. The offense is going to be there.

Anderson's hitting the #### out of the ball. Unfortunately the gun will go off and the season will start and he will be bad again.

Hopefully that will not be the case. A lot of people in the Sox front office/media are fowning all over him and even calling him their best outfielder. Ramirez still impressive but can he hit when the season starts?
