Summary:

10. Marvin Lewis' ego could be getting in the way of a terrific coaching career.

9. Brett Favre will regret his decision to return to the Packers by Week 4, when John Madden won't be around on "Monday Night Football" to explain away Favre's terrible performance against the Eagles.

8. Phillip Rivers is going to bomb in San Diego.

7. As much as I dislike Terrell Owens, I have to admit he's going to have success in Dallas this season.

6. But I don't like the Cowboys as much as I like the Washington Redskins, my pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

5. Joey Harrington is going to beat out Daunte Culpepper by midseason.

4. Peyton Manning will not miss Edgerrin James.

3. Edgerrin James will miss Peyton Manning and the Colts' offensive line.

2. Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle accident will negatively impact his performance this season.

1. The Baltimore Ravens are my pick to win the Super Bowl.
I always enjoy reading his columns, as I think he's a great writer. However, a few of these puzzle me a bit.I, too, think Culpepper will struggle mightily in Miami this year. However, Harrington? :lmao:

Summary:

-I think he's on the money about this one. accepting a few 'bad apples' is one thing, but I've seen my Saints fall apart up close in part due to some serious character issues. If things go well early, they may stay well, but are some of these guys the type to rally against adversity if they drop a few games? You need character guys.

9. Brett Favre will regret his decision to return to the Packers by Week 4, when John Madden won't be around on "Monday Night Football" to explain away Favre's terrible performance against the Eagles.

Probably so. Mike McCarthy was one of the most puzzling hires I've ever seen at head coach. I don't see the Pack doing well this year, and if that's the case we'll see more of the same from Favre, forcing passes to try desperately to keep his team in the game. To no avail though, of course.

8. Phillip Rivers is going to bomb in San Diego.

Disagree. At least, as much as I can without an incredible amount of knowledge about Rivers game. Whitlock gripes about Rivers arm strength, but Brees wasn't exactly a flamethrower at QB either. I actually like most of what I hear about Rivers and his leadership qualities (everyone who's played with him or ever coached him or against him seems enamored by him...and not in the usual way that coaches talk up players either), but time will tell there.

7. As much as I dislike Terrell Owens, I have to admit he's going to have success in Dallas this season.

Agreed. This isn't a "want to behave" situation for TO as it is a "need to behave". He signed a bad contract in Philly, paniced and forced his way out of town. TO might be unstable enough to blow up again and ruin everything, but I tend to think he'll give Dallas his all....for at least one yearm just like in Philly.

6. But I don't like the Cowboys as much as I like the Washington Redskins, my pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

I like the Panthers, but the Skins would be my next pick, followed closely by Tampa. Portis should be a freak in this system, they have a wonderful 3 WR set, and they might have combined the best offensive, defensive coordinators in the NFL and a super bowl winner in Gibbs overseeing it. Last year they had half a season of offensive success just because you needed over the top help at all times on Moss...that was with no other WR threat. If Brunell can pull off one good season, they'll be playing Car in the NFC title game at least.

5. Joey Harrington is going to beat out Daunte Culpepper by midseason.

If it weren't Harrington, it would be possible. Culpepper was awful for stretches last year, but the Vikes were a mess, period. I don't believe he's as bad as he was early last year, nor as good as his numbers looked before that.

He had 2 major things going for him in his career though that other qbs didn't...his wheels, and his Moss. He lacks Moss and may be more immobile now.

4. Peyton Manning will not miss Edgerrin James.

Possible. I think James is a good, not great player, since his knee injury. Addai could be the same. But everyone is certain that with no James, Manning will just pass more...but what about last year when every defense keyed pass early on and made Edge beat them? Manning needs a running game. Addai should do well, so I agree here.

3. Edgerrin James will miss Peyton Manning and the Colts' offensive line.

The Colts OL stinks as far as run blocking. At least in short yardage....they can run the stretch well, but if they need a yard in the redzone James is getting hit in the backfield. Arizona's running game was scary (as in bad) last year, but it probably had as much to do with the runners as the line. Only a year before that, Emmitt Smith had success running the football in the twilight of his career, so they probably are salvageable. Boldin and Fitz make sure that 8 won't be in the box all game, so James should do fairly well.

2. Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle accident will negatively impact his performance this season.

I dunno how it'll effect Ben, everyone reacts differenlty to things like this. He might go in the other direction and seize the moment on the field like never before.

1. The Baltimore Ravens are my pick to win the Super Bowl.
I choose Carolina, but I feel the champion will be one of The Panthers, Skins, Ravens, Patriots, Chargers, or Bucs. I have my own reasons for not listing some of the usual suspects in there, but those 6 teams are the ones I could sit here right now and see hoisting the trophy in 07.

This should be a poll "How many Whitlock statements do you agree with"?

I'd go with 3.5, Rivers won't totally bomb, but he'll hurt the team for a few years.

I can't believe ESPN has him doing columns for them. We who have listened and read his ranting realize, while he can be funny, his predictions/advice are worth what you pay for it, not a darn thing. Use it at your own risk.

Whether he's on the money or not, I applaud ballsy picks. Good for him sticking his neck out. A lot of predictions are pretty obvious stuff, you could go back before the 2005 season, and make some outlandish picks that turn out to be right.

I don't agree with many of them, but I like to see someone willing to go out on a limb.

I don't. I have little desire to see a guy tell me that the next roll of the die will be a 6, just because he says it with conviction.

The Cardinals are the sleeper pick of 2005 2006! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

The best thing to do would be to reverse his statements. Then you'd have something a little more accurate.

Except the part about Marvin Lewis...I hope that whole team implodes on him. The guy goes on record saying character is of utmost importance (while he's got about 4 guys being arrested for various charges), then he goes and drops a 3rd rounder, which apparently no one else was willing to part with for a guy that is a convict and will probably end up in jail before the season starts.

I used to like Marvin Lewis...I was rooting for him...now, I'm not so sure.

Especially when he backs up his conviction with no facts...

Probably the best list of predictions I"ve read all offseason. This guy clearly knows his stuff, although I think the Skins will beat the Ravens in the SB, but it will be close.

these are either obvious or proposterous, or basic predictions,TO has had success everywhere....good call on him.

Edgerin James is going to miss the best offense and qb in football? Go figure.

Harrington...I'm not even gonna go into it...

The Lewis thing is kind of an oddball one. If he wins a superbowl, is this guy to say he would have won 3 or 4 if not for his ego?

Favre had a horrible year last year. It's not going out on a limb to project him to do bad this year.

I don't think Rivers will bomb, but it could happen.

I see the NFC coming down to Washington and Carolina

It may not be the most noticable thing in the world, but I believe all of the colts will miss James.

The Ravens in the superbowl, it's not unimaginable. I have the Broncos from the AFC though.

again, mostly obvious, some basic predictions, and the Harrington thing....

:goodposting: It is equally likely that Roethlisberger will realize "Holy ####, I really CAN die at any moment... I better make the best of what I've got" and step to greater levels.

As opposed to what? It positivley affecting them?

there should be a poll: ' how many people don't give a #### what Whitlock says?' :lmao:

but if I must:

I agree , Rivers will bomb, TO will do well, Favre will regret the decision to come back..

Summary:

10. Marvin Lewis' ego could be getting in the way of a terrific coaching career.

Could be right, I don't know what he's really referring to

9. Brett Favre will regret his decision to return to the Packers by Week 4, when John Madden won't be around on "Monday Night Football" to explain away Favre's terrible performance against the Eagles.

I lean toward agreeing here, and not for homer reasons. The Packers could be the worst team in the NFC this year.

8. Phillip Rivers is going to bomb in San Diego.

I doubt he'll bomb, but I also question whether he can match Brees' output

7. As much as I dislike Terrell Owens, I have to admit he's going to have success in Dallas this season.

Couldn't agree more

6. But I don't like the Cowboys as much as I like the Washington Redskins, my pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

I have the Skins finishing dead last, with the Cowboys being the team to beat.

5. Joey Harrington is going to beat out Daunte Culpepper by midseason.

If Harrington is on the field in midseason, it's because Culpepper is hurt, not based on production.

4. Peyton Manning will not miss Edgerrin James.

Depends on whether Rhodes and Addai can handle the load, but I tend to agree here

3. Edgerrin James will miss Peyton Manning and the Colts' offensive line.

Of course he will...no brainer

2. Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle accident will negatively impact his performance this season.

Who knows...this is a silly prediction

1. The Baltimore Ravens are my pick to win the Super Bowl.

I don't hate this prediction, but I think things have to fall just right for them, but totally feasible especially if Carson Palmer isn't back at full strength.

the Ravens winning the Superbowl is not a ballsy pick, it's a stupid one.
