People used to love Rube Waddell except for his coaches.

His response was for that disgraceful hotel episode in Detroit." To which Rube responded: "You're a liar! There ain't no Hotel Episode in Detroit!"

Him just leaving the field to chase firetrucks is so awesome. Back when Waddell pitched a lot of the players were literally off the street. Lots of train hobos and kooks, so Waddell's behavior probably was within reason. He was also a hell of a pitcher, so that helped.

I'm reading a book about Waddell right now. Apparently he never washed his suits. He'd just wear them until they became to dirty for even him and he'd throw them out. He was about to throw one out when one of his teammates asked if he could have it. Waddell said sure and gave it to him. So his teammate went out, had it cleaned and pressed. When Waddell saw this teammate wearing this suit he told him he thought is was a snappy suite and bought it off him.
