Who does your team franchise? (1 Viewer)

49ers may well tag J. Peterson...

You could see teams use transition tags on a few guys, as well...

Backus in Detroit

Josh Brown in Seattle

Witherspoon in Carolina

Kampman in Green Bay

Another player to consider is A. Randel El...winning the Bowl is a big incentive to keep the core together, even if that means overpaying for someone like Antwaan.
I don't think there's any way on Earth the Steelers can pay El $6m+ this season. It's just not their way - they'll devote money towards keeping the lines intact and the backups in the fold. They spend money towards depth, not towards stars (see Ward negotiations) and because of Ward's deal, have as much tied up in WRs as they're likely willing to spend, especially on a team that runs over 50% of the time. Their business model is to keep the foundation intact and contend every year, with the hopes that they break through every now and again. They're not going to chase another ring at the risk of making the team non-competitive in the near future, a la Baltimore.
Hey Evil,I agree it's not their normal way, but why not transition tag him? Admittedly it probably won't happen, but paying ARE top-10 money for a season [until they can work out a fair longer-term contract] wouldn't be silly given their position as defending champs.
I don't think it would be silly, but they won't do it. Seriously, they're not going to pay him more than $2m a season IMO, and anyone who offers more is going to get him. There's no way they'll pay him 5-6m this year when they can use that cap space to give upfront money to guys like Polamalu or Ike Taylor, who are restricted free agents next year and this year respectively, to get those guys under long-term deals.
I'll go so far as to say it would be downright stupid for the Steelers Brass to do this. We have enough concerns for FAs to sign and ARE is not worth $5M+ for a year....and I'm a big fan of the guy. I thought it made sense last year to use the Trans. tag on Burress and they didn't do it then. ARE is worth a lot less than Burress.

GB-Ryan Longwell
Is that a guess or have the Packers stated they would franchise him? I know he wants to leave and go south. As a fantasy owner, I'd like to see him leave and go to Indianapolis.
It was reported as a possibility Thurs on NFL Radio during one of there 2 min. drills.

Nate Clements

Bills Designate Clements as Franchise Player

ORCHARD PARK, NY – The Bills announced that the team has designated cornerback Nate Clements as its franchise player.

“We are announcing today that we have placed the franchise tag on Nate Clements,” Bills general manager Marv Levy said. “We consider Nate a valuable member of our defense and believe he will play an important role in re-establishing our defense as one of the toughest units in the league. At the same time, we remain optimistic that we will be able to work out a long-term deal with Nate in the foreseeable future.”

Good Topic Bri  The question this year seems more about who's NOT being tagged. The uncertainty of the CBA has everyone rethinkging the tag status. Cornerbacks will be popular as their value has gone down, but unless a team thinks they absolutely can't due without a guy, they just aren't tying up a ton of money in any 1 player. Very strange indeed. The Lions will tag OT Backus...

If the Lions can't work out a long-term deal with left tackle Jeff Backus by Thursday's deadline, they will use their franchise or transition tag on him, effectively keeping him out of the free-agent market. "I want to try to keep on pushing to try to get the thing worked out here shortly," Millen said. But "I wouldn't be afraid of a tag at all."

Thanks Jason. Each of those are in the first post. Any more? When is the official deadline to tag players? I've seen a couple of different dates, but I thought it was the 24th.

Franchise prices.....

-Running backs will carry a franchise tag of $6,085,000 and a transition tag of $5,153,000.

If there is no difference between HB and FB to the franchice tag, no way KC tags Richardson. He's certainly nice to have, but not at that figure.
