What are thoughts on beefeater?

And I heard that there was a new tanq coming out soon called old toms something or other.

I actually like tonic by itself, although it's not nearly as strong these days as it used to be back when people drank it in concentrations that were effective against malaria. (Most tonic these days, in fact, is fake.) I think people started drinking gin with their tonic to help alleviate the bitterness. Also, alcohol is fun.

Yes they are. It is an interpretation of an 1835 recipe from Charles Tanqueray. It is neutral grain spirit with liquorice, angelica root, Tuscan juniper, and coriander. Same things that go into Tanqueray but larger amounts. This distillate is then cut with a new make spirit called Coffey Spirit (named after Aeneas Coffey who designed the first column still) and this new make spirit is made from wheat and after aging is the same thing blended with malt whisky to create blended whiskies. The reason being is that this new make spirit introduces flavors that would have been in the original product because back then you had a lesser quality of a base spirit and it brings a slight sweet fruitiness to the spirit and because of the higher amount of liquorice, they can use less beet sugar in the product.

Word around the campfire is that they are only bottling 100,000 units.

WAT

Tanqueray and Tonic was a go to back in the day. Which was the 80's. Went well with the cocaine. Good times.

I constantly sip on gin and tonic whilst fulfilling my duties for the foreign office so as to stave of malarial mosquitos.

(Definitely a guy drink; only extremely rarely have I ever been around a woman drinking one. As others have said gin tends not to appeal to the wimmins.)

I got really sick on gin my senior year in high school, and I can't stomach it after that. Since that vomit session, gin reminds me of drinking pine needles. :X As for a G&T being a man's drink, I know some women that like it.

Gin appeals to wimmins when they drink their Tom Collins

Second try.

Anyone ever try Martin Miller gin? Supposedly, it's fan-#######-tastic and I got that tip from the guy who suggested Hendricks to me 5 years ago--before it got trendy.

Oh, try your Hendricks and tonic with a cucumber slice. It's really good.

Although it is a fruit, cucumbers have no place in drinks.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

has to be tanqueray....
you prefer that to some of the others, like Hendricks and Boodles?

Tanqueray is what I'll drink if there's literally nothing else at the bar.
never had boodles....will have to give it a try...
Hendricks is great. Boodles I enjoy. Bombay Sapphire is great too, an easy old stand by - although sometimes I actually prefer the snap of Bombay London DryPS: Tanqueray is probably my least fav of the decent brands. Actually prefer Seagrams Dry (which, dollar for dollar and esp for tonics etc, is fantastic)

Especially a drink like gin. Your drinking flowers people - wonder, drunk inducing flowers.

A little syrup type sweetener and something like a cucumber makes for a mighty nice refreshment.

concur.

sometimes... if I'm feeling completely crazy... I'll even put fresh mint in there. *bam*

Hate gin. But to each his own. For hot weather drinks that are perfecet refreshment and full of alcoholic goodness I have become addicted to the Mint Julep. Still looking for the perfect recipe - there's a place at Colonia Williamsburg that rocks the thing.

The only time and place I drink Mint Juleps is on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs. I've come to love them.

Some years ago, I read that gin is the most impure alcoholic spirit. Can anyone confirm or deny?

btw, chet- lookikng forward to trying that Martin Miller gin. might get a chance this weekend- I'll report back.

That might refer to it being the only spirit traditionally distilled with something other than grain or sugar/molasses (juniper and other botanicals). In some ways, it's flavored vodka with a better reputation.

I used to do Tanqueray and tonic, and Bombay Sapphire for martinis. Now I just to Bombay for everything. I used to think it was expensive but it isn't
Now try Hendricks

Ok, but does it still get you drunk?

I was drinking a G&T at my grandmothers this weekend... she told me I wasn't old enough to drink them. WTF?

What I like about gin is also what can be frustrating about gin. Which is that they can be very different products. I like Bluecoat, which I use at home, but it isn't necessarily the best gin for every tonic or for a martini with an olive (I keep Plymouth around for martinis, usually). But with fever tree tonic and using an orange twist, I love Bluecoat, because the citrus notes are very prominent in it.

I always sort of wanted to be a British Imperialist, and this is the drink I would sip in the shade while my servants prepared a bath, a scrumptious dinner, and a beautiful concubine. Afterwards I would retire to my club. Damn the natives!

This thread got me hankering.

I hate to go Dentist here, but tonic water is closer to Mountain Dew than it is too water.

Opted for club soda. Still quite tasty.

Is this like juice?

Because when my mind is on my money, and my money is on my mind, I like to sip on my gin and juice.

I used to drink tonic with lime as a kid on hot days with my pops so it was only natural in college to have gin and tonics become my go-to drink, and it still is.

I'm a Tanqueray guy, but mix it up on occasion with Hendricks or Sapphire. Junipero (made by Anchor Steam) is decent; No. 209 is a favorite; and a high school friend created Aviation American Gin, so I drink that when I can find it.

We have a lime tree at home which almost tastes like a different fruit than the little Mexican ones typically available in markets here, and a healthy squeeze of that fresh off the tree really makes for a tasty cocktail.
