Who else believes Linebrink is traded soon? (1 Viewer)

He's a free agent after this season, so I expect the Padres to trade him before the trading deadline for some prospects. I doubt they will be able to sign him before the trading deadline, so that's the reason why I think he is gone. If Linebrink goes to a decent situation I expect him to have stud closer status right away.

I think he is going to command closer money when he hits free agency, and he probably deserves it. He has just be an excellent setup man for the last several years. The asking price will likely be high though, and I wonder if teams will be paying the price knowing he can be had at the end of the season. Still, I would put it at 70-30 that he is traded by the deadline.

Even though I agree with the 70/30 odds, the smart money might say he is more valuable to SD this year than what they will get in a trade. While that may be true, I know that SD was shopping him earlier this year, so getting nothing for him in 2008 probably doesn't sit well with the SD brass.

why would they trade a great bullpen arm right in the middle of a playoff race? :banned:
I agree somewhat, saying so in a post while you were typing yours, but there are a lot of factors that will play into this decision.
You're not going to get any uber-prospects for a rented relief pitcher, even a very good rented relief pitcher. Certainly nobody that can help the Padres this year. Because of that, I think SD will hold on to him. Trading away key parts of your team while you're in the middle of a penant race is a PR nightmare.

Good points all around. It basically comes down to this: the Padres are looking to upgrade LF, and feel that they can replace Linebrink in the bullpen by moving Meredith or Heath Bell into his roll with little dropoff. If Towers feels the LF'er that Linebrink can bring is a significant upgrade over Jose Cruz Jr, then Linebrink is gone. The Padres feel they are one good stick away from being WS contenders, this year. However, as Cappy mentioned, they won't just give Linebrink away, considering how valuable he is and the fact that he'll likely bring a couple of fairly high compensation picks in return when he's signed to be someone else's closer in the offseason.A contender who has closer problems is the perfect trading partner. An AL club who is willing to sacrifice a decent OF bat who can play defense in Petco.

 , but I don't think the Comp picks come anywhere close to what they would get in a trade. Meredith fits in very nicely in the setup role, and with others, Linebrink is expendable for the right deal.
