Who else is convinced the Colts draft either WR or RB at #27? (1 Viewer)

I know they need a DT and LB, but I'm pretty sure most of the players worthy of the #27 pick at those positions will be gone when the Colts pick. The Colts could also use another WR and RB, so I look for Polian to take the BPA at #27 and that will either be LaSean McCoy or Hakeem Nicks.

ETA: per massraider's post, if Hood is there, the Colts jump on him. No doubt about it, but I don't think he will be there.

I think they do. would put the probability at 80% they go WR or RB given their history, player values this year and team losses over the offseason.

There are simply too many players to name that went after 27th pick in round 1 and turned out as HOF quality and too many players that went in the top 10 that were out of the league in 3 seasons.

If Ziggy Hood is there, I think he's the guy.
Hood is a very good choice if he's there. He projects as a 1st - 2nd rd pick and his stock is rising. He was better at his pro day than the combine (He showed improved marks in the bench press (35 reps with 225 pounds), vertical jump (34.5 inches) and broad jump (9 feet, 8 inches)). The one thing I really like about Hood is that he's not only very talented, but is a good person. The type of player the Colts and Polian love.

I don't think Nicks fits their system.

Robiskie wouldn't surprise me though. He seems to fit the Colts WR mold.

I think WR or DT is most likely. We might draft a RB, but I doubt it's any earlier then round 2.

Some guys I could see the Colts taking with their first round pick:

1a. Ziggy Hood - He should be there and he's fast compared to other DTs which is something the Colts like.

1b. Percy Harvin - There's a a good change he'll be there. Besides replacing Harrison, he'd also be a huge upgrade in the Colts' return game. However, if his character is an issue, the Colts probably will pass on him.

Lesser possibilities:

-Peria Jerry - He probably won't be there. There's a lot of team picking between 19 and 26 that could be looking for a 4-3 DT or 3-4 DT.

-J

-Darrius Heyward-Bey - He probably won't be there.

-Kenny Britt - The Colts haven't gone after big receivers in the past so it's unlikely.

-Clay Matthews - one of only a couple of linebackers that are fast enough to play Colts scheme that could be available when the Colts pick and worth a 1st round pick.

-Brian Cushing - Cushing is the other linebacker the Colts could take.

-Darius Butler - If the Colts don't plan on resigning Marlin Jackson at the end of this year, then there's a small chance he could be the pic.

-Jarron Gilbert - The Colts have surprised people with their picks before. Gilbert would be a DT in the Colts scheme.

I like Robiskie, but I like Nicks more. He has great hands, good burst out of the breaks to get separation, and I like his size. He has more upside than Robiskie, and is more suited as a WR #2 than Robiskie.

You have to understand how the Colts brass thinks (Polian in particular), and they will not draft a bad character guy like Harvin.

i agree. Think if they do go WR that early they look for an outside guy and potentially work Gonzo back into the slot.

I don't think they NEED a WR, and Garcon and Hall have shown some promise (despite Hall's injuries). If I were in charge I'd hope that Jerry or Hood fall to me. That being said, Polian snatching a WR wouldn't surprise me. Another take on it:

Scouts Inc. take: "If history has taught us anything about the Colts' organization it is that Bill Polian and Co. will use first-round picks to surround Peyton Manning with plenty of skill-position talent. It is a long, illustrious list of first-rounders and that trend could continue once again this year. With Wayne, Gonzalez and Dallas Clark -- all former first-rounders -- in the fold right now, another wideout might not appear to be as high of a draft priority as defensive tackle, which is a position made up of adequate-at-best starters. But the Colts' decision-makers understand what has made them so successful throughout the Manning era and probably will continue with that strategy. While defensive tackles like Peria Jerry, Ziggy Hood and Ron Brace will be attractive to Indianapolis, do not be surprised when Britt or Brian Robiskie's name is taken to the podium for the Colts in Round 1." -- Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc.

I don't disagree with that, but I don't think Nicks fits what the Colts do on offense. He's more of a YAC receiver in the mold of Anquan Boldin or Jerricho Cotchery. The Colts seem to like downfield WRs in the mold of Chad Johnson or Torry Holt. If they pick a WR in the late first round, Robiskie is the only guy who makes sense for them.

what about Pierre Garcon? Anybody think the Colts give this kid a chance to get some playing time.

I think drafting a RB would make sense since Addai doesnt seem to be able to assume the duties of a full time RB without getting dinged up. He seems better as a time share RB to me

What about Nicks as a less dynamic Harrison?

Yeah, I'm a Colts fan so I know how they think. If Harvin actually failed a drug test at the combine, then I think it's extremely unlikely the Colts would draft him. However, it turned out a lot of other players on that list released by nfldraftbible didn't fail their drug test so Harvin may have not either.

Nicks - 6'1" 212 poundsHarrison - 6'0" 185 pounds

Nicks has a higher BMI than Dwayne Bowe. He's a big guy. The Colts tend to favor slimmer receivers with better downfield speed. I think the potential day one WRs who best fit their system are Maclin, Robiskie, Dillard, Murphy, and Tate.

I don't see them going for a big possession WR like Nicks, Britt, or Barden (Nicks might be a slight possibility).

Is Rhodes not worth retaining?
he was talking to buffalo last we heard...right?not sure 27 is right for WRRB would be interesting.. depends on their faith in Addai. Andre Brown or Wells, maybe Peerman... would compliment addain... Wells may be worth the 27, but prolly not the other 2...

It's been confirmed that Harvin DID fail the drug test.Profootballtalk.com reports that it has confirmed Florida WR Percy Harvin tested positive for marijuana at February's Scouting Combine. The original report came from NFLDraftBible. Harvin's camp never denied the news and the underclassman is reportedly already being removed from teams' draft boards. Draft-eligibles often admit during Combine interviews that they smoked marijuana in college, but actually producing dirty drug tests in Indy sends up a huge red flag. Harvin may fall out of the top-32 picks.Source: Profootballtalk.com

I may be a sloppy reader but noone's mentioned the possibility of the Colts looking at an offensive lineman at the bottom of the first. Perhaps Max Unger or Alex Mack? Is that an utnhinkable scenario.

To me the Colts most glaring weakness was the interior on both lines last year. Everyone seems to blame Addai but truth is the line couldn't block anyone despite defenses not being able to crowd the line (fearing to be burned by Manning).

Imho the most likely picks seem to be a defensive lineman like Jerry (true what has been said that he may not be around) or Hood.

I agree on DT, but not the OL at #27. I'm sure the value of WRs and RBs will be > OL at #27. Polian traditionally thinks of keeping Peyton Manning's weapon cubbard full, so unless one of those stud DT fall to the Colts, expect Polian to draft either WR or RB.

They drafted 3 C/Gs last year, AND 2007 starting G Ryan Lilja didn't play a down last year but should be back this year. I think they need to give the interior OL another year to develop before using an early pick on a C/G. If the interior blocking is just as crummy in 2009, THEN reload at C/G. I'd be happy with Jerry or Hood in the 1st. We'll see if they do that.

The Indy Star's beat writer had his mock draft printed yesterday. He had the Colts taking Robiskie at #27. We'll see if he has any insight here.

I think there some other areas they need to cover with that pick DT,OL,LB. They can get a pretty good receiver with 2nd or 3rd round imao.

If Moreno is there at #27, I think he's a perfect fit for the Colts.Good hands, athletic, versatile..
I wrote that before Sal Palantonio virtually "guaranteed" the Eagles want Moreno at #21 or a trade up.
Maybe the Colts move up ahead of the Eagles?
I really doubt that will happen. They have several needs - and a good prospect will be there at #27. I'm just not sure who it will be.
I like Hood, Britt, Nicks, McCcoy, and Robiskie at #27 (not as much with Robiskie)

But the Colts' decision-makers understand what has made them so successful throughout the Manning era
yeah. Manning. sure hasn't been the stellar D Polian has built lolin fact if they had paid more attention to the D the Colts likely have more than 1 ring in that era IMO and not had so many early playoff exits, and I will lmao if they do not draft a front 7 player for D, they have almost nothing there at all. to draft a third WR instead when they already have Wayne and Gonzo would be really, really dumb. "BPA" only goes so far, not considering what the team NEEDS is silly.

You're right - but Polian really had some awful DT luck last season and in recent years. Ed Johnson got kicked off, Quinn Pitcock retired after one season in the NFl, their trade for McCargo was voided by a physical. And, in previous seasons - Corey Simon wasn't the answer (their biggest FA try in recent memory), McFarland had one good season before getting hurt - they drafted a couple of other DL busts (Sweet Pea Burns - Jonathon Welsh) recently.

Ron Brace would fit nicely in the middle. Not sure he'd he there in round two.

He'd be a possibility if they decided to trade down into the early/mid 2nd round. I don't think he'd be there at the end of round 2 - and I don't think he'd be worth the #27 pick in the draft.

I would say there's a 80% chance Hood is there.I would say there's a 40-50% chance Jerry is there. If a quick, penetrating DT is at the top of the Colts wish list, they'll get one. Also, to clear up a misconception, Jerry is NOT a 3-4 DE candidate. Of course a 3-4 team could do something dumb and take him to be one, but he is a gap shooter, not a guy that can anchor against double teams, and he doesn't have the frame length or arm length to be a 3-4 DE. Baltimore runs all kinds of looks and maybe they can create a role for him. My understanding is that Tampa and Indy both want to get more stout against the run up front, so Im not sure either will take Jerry. I love the way he gets after the QB from DT, but he might take a fall because his flaws are overshadowing his strengths in the buzz bin right now.PFW published this yesterday:

“(Mississippi DT) Peria Jerry can ball out for two quarters, but you put on the Senior Bowl game tape and he struggles to win if he does not win with his first move. You line him up over the top of big guards and he can’t handle it. He will have to be in gaps to have a chance. He does not fit us.”

I think they do. He had a great combine and supposedly is a good football player "knows the game". I just don't see the need at WR. With Wayne, Gonzo, and Clark (TE) there won't be many passes left to go around.

It is possible the Colts have no interest in Jerry - the 1st day DT prospects that we "know" they've contacted, interviewed or attended their pro day are Hood, Brace and Moala. Not Jerry. There is a very smart poster at Stampedeblue.com (a great Colts fan blog) that compares possible draft prospect and ask "who would you take?" He did a comparision of Hood and Jerry - and he made a compelling case that Hood is the better prospect. Here's the link: Hood vs. Jerry - You Decide

Great post. I was thinking the same thing. Just because Harrison is gone does that mean they really have a need there? This has been the Wayne show for a couple of years now and AG has shown some great promise. I think they will go WR at some point, just not at 1 or 2.Now RB, who knows on that one.....
