Who has a better rookie campaign? (1 Viewer)

Martin has been everyone's darling of the preseason and he's being drafted pretty early often ahead of Richardson.

Neither guy has a stud OL in front of them, neither guy has a stud QB or is coupled with a great passing game, we know Richardson has this knee thing he has dealt with all through training camp and preseason. If Richardson is back and ready to be a workhorse, who looks to have the better season?

Richardson seems to be THE guy once he is ready and we really don't know how much of a factor Blount will play in the TB running game.

What say you Shark Pool?

Martin.Richardson is the better player, but Martin has the better situation.
+1This should be a poll. Richardson will be off to a slow start because of his knee issues and missed practice time. Also, facing BAL, PIT, and CIN for six games is less exciting than NO, CAR, and ATL.

Even as a Browns fan, I have to say Martin will post the better fantasy year, although T-Rich should be solid as a RB2.

true, Richardson will need some time to get up to speed, although coach did say he's playing a full game if he's ready week 1, but we'll see if Martin gets many goal line situations.

Ugh! This question and situation is killing me. I have the 1st pick in my keeper league tonight, and I can't decide who to draft there.

On the one hand, the draft is on ESPN, so Martin's name does not show up on the player list until around the 7th round.

On the other hand, I doubt drafters really care when Martin's name shows up.

The first pick is Round 6 pick #1. Then I have my next pick at Round 7 pick #3. I have been thinking that I should take TRich with that first pick, and then hope that Martin will make it back to me at 7.03. I highly doubt that will happen.

So I am agonizing over whether I should take Martin with that first pick. Everything in me is saying to take Martin, who will pair with Ray Rice on my squad, however it is a keeper league, so I have to consider Richardson.

It was nice to see that Richardson was riding a bike, but that hardly gives me a hell of a lot of confidence

I honestly have no idea. I think they're both primed to surprise people.

They both have complete skills sets. They can handle all the carries and goal line work, and also chip in with a lot of receptions.

I do think Martin looks like the safer pick because of his health and supporting cast, but I also wouldn't feel good about betting against Trent Richardson. I've said for a while that I rank him in the Edgerrin James/Ricky Williams/Clinton Portis class as a running back. He's a truly elite talent, and you don't want to bet against a guy like that. He's so talented that he could finish as a top 3 RB if he stays healthy.

Overall, Richardon by a hair.

That class makes no sense. Different talents with completely different career paths.

For competition, Martin should win. Due to his knee woes, don't be surprised if Richardson is in an RBBC in the first couple of weeks with Hardesty/Jackson. Blount will only be spelling Martin, not stealing anything. I also think the better situation category is arguable, since TB has the better run blocking offensive line. TB also has more weapons on their offense to prevent teams from stacking the box.

Elite backs with versatile skill sets and enough talent to hang around the league long after their prime was over. Richardson is much like Ricky and Edgerrin in terms of talent level and overall impact. If his knees allow it, he will be a great bell cow in the NFL for a long time.

Actually, I'll take Wilson over both guys because of his surrounding cast
Sorry - we are talking about starting RBs.Bradshaw is the starter and ready to roll for week 1.

There is no way Wilson sniffs the production of either of the two mentioned in this thread unless Bradshaw falls over dead on the field. Bradshaw is only 26 and last season was the first time in 4 seasons he had missed more than 1 game. He also averages 40+ receptions over the past 2 seasons, so it's not like Wilson has to come in on every 3rd down.

Wilson is a talented back - but for now (and probably at least the rest of the season) he's Bradshaw's handcuff - not replacement, despite the rookie hype and preseason fluff.

ETA: Put me down for TRich. I think Clevland's run blocking is a little better than some think. MJD did okay as the only offensive weapon on a putrid Jax team - TRich will do fine.

I would love to actually see Richardson take some handoffs before I make my determination.

Does anyone else think he looks a bit like Edgerrin James (pre-knee injury) when he runs?
I think they look similar but Richardson looks more powerful to me. I don't remember Edge running over/through guys as often as Richardson did (granted we haven't yet seen Richardson vs. NFL defenses.)

I'm interested to see how Martin does vs. NFL defenses. The SEC is notorious for producing RBs. I don't think the WAC (or Mountain West) can say the same. Anybody know what Martins YPC in the preseason was?

The SEC certainly has a ton of RBs come into the league, and of course, many are very good, but I don't think Martin coming from a less prominent conference is an issue. Those guys can do quite well too (CJ2K, R.Matthews, F-Jax, Forte, and Deangelo to name a few. Rice and McCoy, if you consider the Big East on par with the WAC/MWC)

It didn't hurt Tomlinson or Mathews.Where a player went to college is pretty much irrelevant.

I'd have to go with Martin. At least for this year. The 'Ingram like' situation with a gimpy knee for Richardson concerns me. Even if he plays, he could get spelled a lot early till the knee is in a better spot.

And in other info, which means totally nothing except for crazy superstitions, one of the owners in a long time, 25+ years leagues, managed to get Martin this year... uncannily, he has a horseshoe up his butt or something, but always seems to hit on a rookie a year pick... just saying...
