2008 stats:

Ray Rice:

107 carries for 454 yards and 0 TD's - 4.2 YPC

33 receptions for 273 yards and 0 TD's

Le'Ron McClain:

232 carries for 902 yards and 10 TD's - 3.9 YPC

19 receptions for 123 yards and 1 TD

I would like to think that it will be Rice but unless they move McGahee or he ends up hurt early in the season I believe McCLain will be the winner here.

What keeps popping up in my mind is Pittsburgh circa 2005 or so when they had a young QB, a bruiser to push it across the goal line and an "all around" back to get them into the redzone. I keep thinking that Rice is going to end up playing the Willie Parker role and McClain is going to turn into Bettis around the goalline. Now, I'm sure McClain is going to get some other carries, but I see Cameron using Rice as his primary ball-carrier with a TD vulture in McClain to drive fantasy folks nuts. If I recall correctly, FWP had the yards (1,200+??) and Bettis ended up with 10+ TDs and had a game where he had 3 carries for less than 5 yards and 3 TDs.Strong defense, young QB and clock control running game....any body else see the similarities?Note: I don't think much of McGahee going forward, so I purposely omitted him from the conversation as I don't see him figuring in due to being cut, injury or just general ineffectiveness.

Same reason I didn't put him in this poll. He may wind up being the 16 game starter, who knows. But his mounting injuries and poor YPC for his career seem to indicate that is not very likely. I'm starting to think I need to apologize for mocking Buffalo for letting him go for next to nothing. Seems they may have been right all along...

what was rice's injury at the end of the year? something with his leg...

I'm torn on this topic. I was expecting big things from McClain before they cut Neal. Now I'm apprehensive. Can anyone give me some info on how often Baltimore was using Neal last year? I do not recall him being on the field that much, but I am really not sure.

LeRon McClain-RB-Ravens May. 9 - 2:23 pm et

The Ravens envision LeRon McClain transitioning back to a more traditional fullback role this year.

With Lorenzo Neal gone, McClain has been lining up in front of Ray Rice. McClain would rather be toting the rock, but coordinator Cam Cameron seems to see McClain more as a fierce blocker. This is obviously rough news for McClain's fantasy value, but we suspect McClain can still hit 125 carries and will continue to get the majority of short-yardage carries after converting them better than anyone in football last year. Rice has a great opportunity to see his carries climb.

Figured with Lo Neal gone, they'd go with more McClain at FB. I still think if Willis is healthy, they'll ride him with his salary & get what they can. With a healthy Willie, I think McClain has a better 2009 than Rice due to goalline TD's.
