This is a long term analysis, don't get caught up on just 2010, think 5 to 10 years down the line as well.

Assume you have a balanced roster.

Assume settings: Passing: 1 point per 20 yards, Rushing/Receiving 1point per 10yards , TDs worth 6, no PPR. A farly standard lineup.

And I can't see R.McClain going #1 in any scenario other than some crazy scoring system that gives 10 points per tackle.

Really, this is no-brainer... Ryan Mathews is heavily-censused no. 1 pick with an opportunity to start right away. Hell, even coach Norv Turner proclaimed his rookie RB would get at least 275+ touches (rush/rec) and you know all RBs who played for Turner historically produce wells.

It has to be Mathews. He's good (great college stats, great combine numbers, looks good on tape, drafted 12th overall), he's a workhorse-type back (has the size, carried the load in college, SD has relied on one back for years, his coach said that he'll have a ton of carries this year, no major competition for carries on the team), and he should be on a great offense for years to come (Philip Rivers).

I'm sure that's all true, but he looked a bit heavy on his feet, a bit leaden-footed, on the tape I saw. I'm not sure if Spiller and Best might not offer more value down the road - super speedy backs a la Chris Johnson are the way forward.

He sure didn't look heavy on the sprts science show. 16 MPH (J. Best was tops at 18), accelerates to top speed at 7 yards (which, funny enough, is ideal because he will be playing in formations that line up 7 yards off the line of scrimmage), and rediculous 38 degree cutting angles (translates into tremendous side agility explosion).I don't know what "tape" you saw (usually unless you work in the industry or something, you're like the rest of us and you mean "TV" or "internet stream"....Tape is very different), but in timed arenas, his straight line and agile speed appears to be very good.

I'll add Best next time, in the other polls I've done of only offense, Best wasn't one of the first 2 off the board for Non PPR, and I felt the need to add the top IDP guy, need to have at least one.

Ryan Matthews, easily has no competition for the starting gig ( Sproles? c'mon now)has a terrific supporting cast and a coach who knows a thing or two about productive running games..

For those complaining about Best, If there was enough "Other" votes for people who wanted Best he would of won, he is listed in the next poll (Current poll). He didn't have a legitiment chance of winning this as he wasn't voted the #1 or #2 in only offense standard on polls done on this same forum a couple days ago.

Yes, but that doesn't matter. Better to have a great RB for 7 years than an average QB for 10 years. If you think Bradford is the next Peyton Manning then he is worth the 1.1 in a dynasty draft. If he is only going to be ok to good, you have to go for a RB first.
