Who is the best non-QB in the NFL? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
If I simply asked "Who is the best player in the NFL?" everyone would likely vote Brady, Manning or Brees.

That would make for a boring thread. So... who is the best player in the NFL who isn't a quarterback?

This may STILL be a boring thread, as I expect the majority to say Adrian Peterson. We'll see.

Andre Johnson - as physically gifted as he is.. his route running is ridiculous. (yes, homer)

You have to look at how each individual player affects the other team's strategy. Eight years ago the answer would've been Randy Moss, as no other player in the league commanded so much attention from the other side of the ball.

Now, it almost has to be Adrian Peterson. The Vikings have added a competent passer this year and still teams refuse to back off the run blitzes. 8 and 9 guys in the box almost every play he's in there. Defensive side of the ball it would have to be Willis right now. I'd say Allen, but stud LTs like Joe Thomas seem to be able to handle him so it's Willis on defense.

I'm a little bit surprised at all of the Willis love. It seems to me that a year ago, the runaway choice would have been Demarcus Ware. Two years ago, it would have been all Shawne Merriman and Lofa Tatupu. Seems to be a lot of turnover at the top at the LB position, moreso than at the other positions. I don't know if that's indicative of absolutely anything, or if it's just random chance. For what it's worth, I'd still take Ware over Willis if I were starting a franchise today, down season or no down season.

Steven Jackson. I understand ADP love and won't question it but S-Jax does more with less than anyone in the league. When he's healthy he's the best IMO.

I always like to think about the who is best at their position topic. I have to agree with the two that stand out to me are ADP and Patrick Willis.

I agree, there's no one dominant defensive player. Every year lately it's someone else, so to say it's Willis or Ware or whomever, it's just the pick of the month club. The best non QB at a skilled position is Adrian Peterson. To me, he's more valuable because he's a notch above anyone else at the RB position (and has been for a couple years) where at defense that's just not the case. It's very likely in 1 year from now we'll be saying another name at defense. At WR, there's about 2 to3 guys that are about the same.

Willis has been the best ILB (and overall LB IMO) in football for 2 years. A lot of people are just now realizing this because SF sucked, gets little national attention and he is a young player. Other guys I'd put on this list:MossA. JohnsonHayensworthJ. AllenJ. Harrison

O=ADP

D=Patrick Willis/Jon Beason (I said Beason because he's got Peppers on a tear since their conversation)

Right now...at this moment...Jared Allen is a beast...who can't be stopped.
Friggin' Max Starks stopped him a couple weeks ago. Burn. The answer to original post is probably Larry Fitzgerald.

While I agree with this, Joe Thomas went one on one with him in the opener and shut him down.I'd say Peterson.

The most surprising thing to me so far is not one person mentioning Ed Reed. Is he no longer at the top of his game?

Adrian Peterson

Steven Jackson

I always have to wonder to myself, if Jackson had that line, just how good would he be? Insane...

WRs?

Fitz and Colston - both make the absolute best plays on the ball, at its highest point and have really sticky hands. If I am starting a WR corps, One of these guys is my first pick.

Nnamdi Asomugha - amazed this guy doesn't get more love

J. Allen is playing at such a high level that it would be tough to not give him the props he deserves.....

Over his last 38 games from 2007 to now (roughly 2.5 years)

-he has 40.5 sacks

-9 forced fumbles

-15 passes defended

-3 safeties

-124 tackles

-2 fumble recoveries one for a 52 yard td

-he also caught 2 td's in that span on offense

-Not to mention the hurry ups he causes, the double teams he forces etc.... All this and he is still only 27 years old.

-Just in relation B. Smith the all time sack leader had a sack average over his career of .79 sacks a game.

-R. White 2nd overall sack leader averaged .85 sacks a game

-K.Greene third averged .70 a game

-J. Allen over the last 2.5 seasons is averaging 1.03 sacks a game

-Over his career so far Allen is averaging .80 sacks a game, and is just now entering his prime sack years. He is scary good.

I think you could make a case for Hines Ward, he just plays a FULL game of football. It's like having a 3rd TE at times when they are running 2 TE sets and then of course goes across the middle with NO hesitation. Great WR!!!!

Patrick Willis is off to quite the start to his career. Using Doug's Approximate Value system, Willis was worth 16 points of AV in '07 (on a mediocre defense, with no other stars, in a year he was a 1st team All-Pro and Pro Bowler), and 12 points of AV last year (on a slightly worse D, with no other stars, in a year he was only a Pro Bowler). This year, he's a lock to make the Pro Bowl again, and probaby will be a 1st team All-Pro on an even better defense this year; he'll probably get about 17 or 18 points of AV this year, which would give him about 46 raw points of AV through age 24. That's damn good for a LB; here are the top 10 LBs (since 1950) in total AV through age 24:

Pretty elite company Willis is keeping with.

When I think of pure football player two guys come to mind: Troy Polamalu and Hines Ward. I wish I was a Steeler fan so I can get on their jocks more but they're both very good at what they do.

I'm a Steeler fan and................. :ninja:
Over the course of his career, he doesn't put up the best numbers, he doesn't blow people away, so I can see why you'd make your remark, however if you listen to people that have played/coached the game whether with him or against him, most consider him to be the most complete WR in the NFL...take it for what it's worth.

The answer to this question is whose abscence would impact his team the most. Lol at all you saying any RB. On offense, the answer is most likely a tackle or wide receiver. On defense it would have to be Troy P or J Allen.

Trust me I LOVE the guy and agree that he is a complete wr. I just don't think he's anywhere near the best overall player in the NFL right now. To be honest, he's not even the best Non-QB on the Steelers team right now. I think Polamalu, Harrison, H. Miller and S. Holmes are all better players.

Who would you consider the best WR in college football right now? Dez Bryant, Arrelious Benn, A.J. Green, Julio Jones, or Riley Cooper?

I don't think ADP is a notch above CJ, MJD, or SJax. Also, on defense, Nnamdi is about seven notches above every other CB in the league.
