Who is the next Steve Smith? (1 Viewer)

Devin Hester

"Maybe Steve Smith," says offensive coordinator Ron Turner when asked if he has ever been around a player as explosive and dynamic as Hester. "That would be the only other guy."

On deep routes, Hester beat every defensive back he could find Saturday. But his long ball potential is not what excites the Bears the most. Hester runs sharp routes and has good hands; with his open-field ability, he can be used in nearly any way Turner can cook up.

For a player who was a failed offensive experiment at Miami because, rumor has it, he couldn't learn the playbook, Hester clearly has been working overtime to make this chance count.

"He's an unbelievable athlete, and he catches the ball really great," quarterback Rex Grossman says. "But nothing surprises me with him. He's a great football player."

I like Aundrae Allison to be someone that comes out of nowhere and performs. He is having a good training camp and would have been a higher pick, but for some character issues that don't seem to be showing up at all in camp. He really doesn't have any established WRs ahead of him, so will have a chance to show his stuff.

I don't know that there is another Steve Smith, but my nominations

3 90 Maurice Stovall WR Notre Dame

4 103 Brad Smith WR Missouri

4 111 Demetrius Williams WR Oregon

4 119 Brandon Marshall WR Central Florida

U David Ball WR New Hampshire (actually, he's Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey)

Your mom.
Thanks for your contribution.... but maybe not as good as the othersMy mom's 40 times have been in the 10.5s which are slow but she does have an excellent work ethic. She also lacks the size and strength to get separation at the line of scrimmage but her vision and ability to read and break down defenses are top notch. Her age could also limit her ability to contribute. She might be flattered that you have such great faith in her but at the same time disturbed that you watch her so closely.

Cotchery showed some explosiveness last year and another sleeper would be Roscoe Parish if he sees enough touches.

I also like Kevin Curtis in Philly

In addition to Steve Smith, there are a few other active 3+ rounders who are highly regarded (are or have been top 30 or so). Here's a list for your viewing pleasure:

There are plenty of candidates. This year's rookie WR crop is incredibly deep, with five third round WRs who have a legitimate chance of becoming solid NFL starters (Higgins, Jac. Jones, Robinson, Walker, and Hill).

Hill is the FBG darling of this bunch and Walker is getting all of the training camp hype, but Robinson is my personal favorite. He has the second best workout numbers of any WR in the draft and he looks pretty smooth on the field. I won't guarantee success for him, but I think he has a chance to be an effective NFL WR in the mold of Reggie Wayne and Torry Holt (not saying he'll be that productive though!).

Brad Smith might be the best bet of the 2006 WRs. He has all the athletic ability needed to excel and I've heard nothing but raves about him (although I'm still wondering why they're giving him snaps at QB). He was apparently the best WR on the field during many Jets practices last year.

I'm still intrigued by Derek Hagan. I don't think he'll be a superstar, but he reminds me a bit of Muhsin Muhammad. We'll see if he's able to emerge over the next few years.

Chad Jackson is in the FF abyss and my spider sense is starting to scream "bust" about him, but he was a high pick by a great organization. Even with his slow start and suspect production in college, he has the physical talent to eventually become relevant.

As for the older veterans, most of the best candidates have been mentioned. Hackett, Curry, Curtis, Br. Jones, and Berrian will all have the opportunity to excel this season. I also think this could be a breakout year for Reggie Williams.

Someone like Courtney Roby could come out of left field and surprise.

I've also heard some hype for rookie WR James Jones, although I wasn't personally impressed with what little I saw of him. Aundrae Allison, Isaiah Stanback, and Chansi Stuckey are three lesser known rookie WRs who have the talent to impact.
