Who is Willie Parker's handcuff now? (1 Viewer)

They cut Dookie to hold Russell once, they probably see a little more in him. Not sure how PS eligibility works, so that may be a little off base.

I'd guess Russell has a legit shot at 2 down work against Jax and will be a legit handcuff to FWP after the bye.

Probably an extra dose of Moore from here forward as well.

A situation best avoided by all but FWP owners.

Davenport was/is not practice squad eligible (due to time in the NFL).

I'd like to see Russell get a shot, but it's hard to say at this point. But my gut says that on Sunday Russell gets most of the 1st-2nd down carries and MeMo gets the 3rd down snaps.

I thought Moore looked real real good last night and was the sole reason they lucked out a win.

I am thinking he will get a bigger chance then most think!

Right now I would say that he has no clear handcuff. If Russell shows anything this week then he may get the job. Otherwise look for 1st & 2nd down carries to be split between Moore, Carey Davis, Davenport and Russell.

Tomlin was vague yesterday, suggesting they'll make a decision later this week, but had an interesting quote about Moore:

"Maybe not for 16 games, but there've been stretches -- 8, 10 games -- where he's capable of doing that, has done that, in his career.
Makes it sound like he'd be comfortable w/ Moore as a stopgap until FWP returns.Link

Mewelde Moore is the only safe investment, he's the 3DRB and will be given an opportunity to shoulder a decent amount of the load, the same opportunity that will be given to Davis, Davenport, and Russell.

I think they'll just ride the hot hand, if you're real desperate any of Davis, Davenport, and Russell are worthwhile pickups but otherwise the only one I'd consider is MeMo - especially in ppr.

My hunch says Gary Russell. Potential to be this year's Ryan Grant practice squad to prominence RB. Runs mean, excels at the goaline. I think Davenport is insurance; if he was any good, he wouldn't be out there on the street 4 weeks into the season.

Moore is overextended at anything but a third down specialist.

Russell played w/ Maroney and Barber at Minneosta so somehwat overshadowed, but the guy can grind out yards.

If anyone wants to read between the lines, here's more from Tomlin:

Russell made the team for the second consecutive season but was released before their third game, at Philadelphia, because they wanted to add special teams player Patrick Bailey for injured Donovan Woods. They signed Russell to their practice squad the day after that game.

Coach Mike Tomlin would not discuss either back at his news conference yesterday, even when asked directly about Davenport.

"I'm not going to talk about any until we make those moves," Tomlin said. "We've got some familiarity things working in the mix. We'll see how that unfolds. Rest assured, we'll play with a running back this week."
Davenport should already be familiar w/ the system, so maybe he's referring to Russell? Maybe they see how he reads blitz pickups this week and how much of the scheme he was able to pick up in the preseason?

Maybe I am wrong here, but didn't Najeh play alot of 3rd down in Pitt?

Maybe we've got it all backwards here and Moore is the 1st and 2nd down guy and Najeh os the 3rd down back.

My gut says Davenport. Just because he's had decent success with the Steelers in spot duty. But I don't know much about Russell.

Is it safe to say FWP will be back after Pitt's bye? ;)
Idk, but the fact that they are ruling him out so early each week even though they need RBs desperately tells me he has a significant injury that may not be better anytime soon. I'm fearful everyday I come on here that I'm going to see "Willie Parker to IR".

They cut Davenport and kept Russell in the off season, so I would think Russell might have the upper hand.

If Parker's out for a prolonged period, then this figures to be one messy RBBC between Davis, Moore, Russell, and Davenport, and you're probably wise to avoid it completely IMO.

Hate to agree with this, but I feel the exact same way.

Can't find the link but seem to remmeber Tomlin heavily praising Russell during preseason, how he looked better than mendenhall on the goaline, etc.

Preseason coachspeak, I know, but still.

any updates

had scooped up Danepoop off waivers then i just cut him for Russell, only cause my team in rebuild mode and i took a chance with the younger fella.

Alright. I think you guys have convinced me to sign Russell and drop Najeh (one day after signing Najeh). I'm dropping the terd.
