Who should get a chance at a Head Coach job next year? (1 Viewer)

For the Vikings, I think they'll stay with Frazier unless they somehow look worse than they have (unpossible).

Other than that, I'd love Cowher but think he might stay retired.

Maybe someone younger like Brian Schottenheimer or Sean McDermott?

Gregg Williams?

Hue Jackson?

Pat Shurmur?

I've been thinking about this a lot as a Bengals fan.

Personally, I would also consider Mike Heimerdinger or Brian Billick.

Here in Cincy, I'm sure Mike Zimmer will get consideration if Lewis doesn't return.

Matt Patricia (LB coach for NE)

Not that I think he is the most deserving out there, mind you. I just think his name doesn't command fear, toughness or domination you want from your LBs. Shipping him out of town for a guy named, Dirk Blastercrush, or something like that would make me feel better when the local radio stations refer to the guy.

I've never heard of Clarence Shelmon being mentioned as a possible candidate, but he's doing a hell of a job with the SD offense.

Most believed that Matt Patricia would get the Defensive Coordinator job in NE this offseason. While OC or DC were (and have not) been named, he is essentially the "Assistant Defensive Coordinator" under BB (who is the DC+HC). I think Matt Patricia is a great coach, and I think it shows from his LB's production (120 comb tackles, most in league).

Jim Harbaugh will probably be hot name from college ranks.
He should be. Former NFL player, has turned Stanford around, and his brother has already enjoyed success at Balt. I keep hearing his name for the Michigan job if it comes back open but it wouldn't surprise me if he finds his way back to the NFL.By the way, I laughed yesterday when Al Michaels said Marty Morningwheg will be on the top of teams' lists as a head coach candidate. Some coaches aren't designed to be anything more than coordinators. He is one of them.

I wouldn't count on it, there's a lot of talk here in Minny about Wilf's obsession with Parcells being that he was an old school Giants fan. Personall I'd like to see Frazier, the Vikings have messed up way too many times by passing on great assistants/coordinatorsn working within who later go to other teams and have great careers while we were stuck here with some clowns like Denny Green, Tice, or Childress. I would be very disappointed if the Vikes hired anyone but Frazier or Parcells but they are the Vikings so the wrong decision is probably coming.

Parcells is 70 years old and has stated he's not interested in coaching. I think that's a really long shot.

Also, his dad was long-time coach in college and won a division ll national championship. The Harbaugh's are showing they know a little about coaching. In addition, Jim and John's sister married the guy who is now the Men's basketball coach at Indiana. One of the cable networks did a show where the four ofthem sat around a dining room table and told coaching stories. It was a good piece.

Hoping this won't happen but I can absolutely see Brian Shottenheimer getting a job. He was close to that Buffalo job, and was convinced, IIRC, by Rex to stay on. I can see him moving on at some point.

gregg williams will be talked about again. very quietly, the saints defense is playing better this year than last.

Dom Capers

He might be one of those guys who falls into the category of good coordinator, bad coach but his previous opportunities came with exansion teams. Maybe a shot with a team that wasn't a complete disaster and he'd be successful

It would be interesting but I wonder if he is just labeled "an expansion guy". I would like him if I started a team from scratch (had Carolina competitive immdiately) and had it not been for Boselli never even playing a down for the franchise, that line may not have gotten Carr killed. In fact, with his first three picks, he took two O-linemen in the expansion draft...unfortunately neither panned out. Had the right idea, just wrong people.

Ron Rivera
Is he still a valid candidate? I know he was hot a few years ago, but with the way things shook out in Chicago, and the fact that (to my knowledge) he hasn't resurfaced as a HC candidate, I wonder if his time has passed. Kind of reminds me of Ray Sherman (or maybe it was Sherm Lewis), the guy in Green Bay who everyone thought would be a good HC. He got a ton of interviews (I believe he is African-American) and got denied everywhere. Pundits were stating it was because he was black, but I think the truth is no one wanted to hand the reigns over to him.

Good post and there are some good canidates being thrown out. Unfortunately it seems as if GMs prefer to hire someone with HC experience (even is their career win% as a coach is .500 or lower) over others. It sucks because these ex-HCs that get rehired rarely do better than how they've previosly preformed, but that seems to be the trend. ...Or that is my perception at least.

Charlie WeissMike Mularkey
Mularkey is a guy that should be on many radars. He has always been a top OC, and deserves a shot.
I was going to point out that he was HC in Buffalo, but, on reflection, I guess that does not really count as a "shot".
I forget about his stint Buffalo, thanks for catching my mistake. Have always loved how he runs an offense and look at getting RBs from his teams.

Well, what teams are going to need HC's at seasons end?

Carolina

Cincinnati

San Francisco

Minnesota

Dallas

Jacksonville?

Who else?

I can see Marvin Lewis winding up in Jacksonville or SF. He's done, and maybe not the best HC in the world, I see a tired, beaten man by a horribly run franchise owner in Mike Brown

Mike Zimmer would be promoted to HC in Cincinnati, because that is what Mike Brown does-he promotes from within to keep the level of ineptitude permeating and current within that shoddy franchise

Jets fans have VERY mixed feelings on Brian Schottenheimer.... I say NO WAY... Most Jets fans won't shed a tear if he goes, while personally, I think he can grow into the OC position but, Head coach... Uggh, I'd say no for my team.....From where i sit, I'd take another Ryan.... ROB RYAN PLEASE!!!!The Ryan Bros have been groomed to be coaches since 10 years old, maybe you can say the same for Schott but, I'd rather have that Kick ### attitude in my HC and I think Rex and Rob were both around in the NFL longer (guessing) and better coordinators than Brian.

This would've been an absolute lock before this season. The only reason its only a maybe now is the defense just has too many players to play as horribly as they have this year, injuries or not. Whether that matters to Mikey remains to be seen, but I think Zimmer's rep as a top DC has taken a hit and probably rightfully so.

Maybe not as a HC next year but a guy who I think might develop into a good coach is Kurt Warner.

I would love to see the Rams see if he'd be interested in starting out as an assistant (QB coach makes sense, no?) with designs of progressing him over time to OC then HC. I think Warner has the wisdom, leadership and temperament for it and could develop the organizational and other skills needed to do the job well. He's a motivational guy who I think players would really like to play for.

It would be great to see him a part of the Ram organization again but I'd route for the guy if another club gave him a shot instead.
