Who should take the majority of the blame for the 8 sacks and the horrid offense tongiht?

Was Brooks playing that poorly to warrant putting in Walter?

No, as I've been screaming in about 8 threads. Brooks threw well and scrambled well.There's NOTHING he could do about being hit before he even took his drop back into the pocket.

1st: Offensive line2nd: Play calling (no screen passes and sticking with 5 and 7 step drops when the O-line is a turnstyle?)3rd: Brooks

Brooks seemed to miss at least a few chances to get the ball out of his hand and take the safety valve, and was also inaccurate with many passes. Walsh called a terrible game. The o-line was disgusting. The WRs were below average. Courtney Anderson had stone hands. And, Shell is the man in charge of all these things. I'd spread the blame around pretty evenly to everyone having something to do with the offense.

The O-line looked awful. I pity them against anyone with a decent front, since it's going to be giving them problems all season long. The running game was less of a disappointment because SD always seems to put a beating on teams (esp. the Raiders) on it.

However, Brooks did have some faults. I kudos him for not throwing a pick, but that's all I give him credit for. He took forever to actually lock on to somebody to throw too and that cost him on the plays where he was getting pressued. At least 3 of those sacks are on him not throwing the ball away or dropping a quick one off to Jordan. That being said, the playcalling was spotty at best. Brooks taking 5 and 7 step drops meant the entire SD front-line was in the backfield by the time he had stepped back.

Couple of dropped balls by the TE and Curry didn't help matters at all. And topping it all off is the Raiders discipline... these arses just cannot go more than 4 downs without getting a stupid penalty called on them.

At the point they put in Walter they had no realistic shot at getting back into the game.*

*I say this, because after being forced to watch Raiders games for the last 3 years, you just tend to know when they've decided to pack up and go home. For a long time the game was 13-0 and all I could think was, "We'll be really lucky to make the game a one TD affair."

With a team that actually cares / willing to use what little talent they have, the thought pattern should be more like. "We're only three scores down and schotty is playing his normal 'play to lose' type offense which means they'll actively try not to score. We can come back."

I hope it's an anamoly, but I'm not holding out hope. At least the Niners improved...

Agreed, although it should be noted that San Diego had NINE sacks, not 8.Andrew Walter was going down at an even higher rate than Brooks was. Brooks scrambling might have been the lone bright spot on an offense that featured more sacks (9) than completions (8).

A huge reason why we should all be skeptical of Jordan's receiving numbers this year. He's obviously not blocking anyone, get outside and take the dumpoff.

you also have to give credit to SD's defense. Sure the Raider's offensive line was terrible, but the Chargers players have to be given some credit also. What's going to happen next week when the Raider's go to Baltimore? How about a shotgun for Brooks? Would this give him more time to throw?

I only watched the first half but Gallery looked awful. I thought this guy was supposed to be the second coming of Tony Boselli.

Thank you to this board!

After trying to figure out where to rank guys like Randy Moss and Lamont Jordan, I took all Raiders off my draft board after reading about the debacle from Shell/Walsh version 1.0.....it looks like version 2.0 will be much worse.

Keep one thing in mind: the SD defense really is outstanding. If you recall the game they finished 2005 with, they absolutely destroyed the Indy offensive line and made it impossible for Peyton Manning to throw, sacked him, etc.

Yes, Oak looked terrible but I'm not going to use this one game as a measuring stick on their entire season

#1) O'line blocking

#2) Jordan's blitz pick up

#3) Play calling {no in game adjustment at all}

#4) Dropped balls

#5) QB play {both QB's sucked equally - but not really their fault - see above}

The O-line looked pretty pathetic.

Brooks could have gotten rid of the ball a couple of times, but overall he had no time whatsoever.

The play calling was the worst. They did not call anything to help out the situation and keep the defense honest.

The O-line stunk, but Brooks has no pocket presence whatsoever.
I agree that there was one pocket breakdown, where he obviously did not feel the pressure & took the sack. But I also saw Brooks feel the pressure on 3 other occasions and escape the pocket turning a would be sack into first downs with his scrambling ability. 3 - 28 yards rushing, attests to that.

It got so bad midway through the fourth quarter that Raiders coach Art Shell pulled Brooks because, he said, he feared for the player's safety. "The bottom line is we have to give the quarterback time to throw the football and hit the open receiver,” said left guard Barry Sims. “When they're running for their lives every play, it's hard to (succeed), no matter who is in there. It all falls on the offensive line. My level of frustration right now, I can't even describe." (Link)
Don't get me wrong, Brooks did nothing to help himself last night, but for those of us who own this guy at least there seems to be some blame being thrown at that sorry excuse for an offensive line.

As much as I dislike Brooks as a player, I have to give him props for his pocket presence last night. It was nice to see the inventor of the 20 step drop actually step up in the pocket.

On the negative side Brooks has an incredibly fragile psyche. After two more games of this his fundamentals will go out the window and he'll start blaming everyone else.

Oakland reminded me of the Redskins under Steve Spurrier. Brooks looked like Partick Ramsey. Just a tackling dummy.

O-line is awful, playcalling is awful. Any QB would do badly. How in the world did Brooks not throw an INT?
