Who's stoked for "The Wiz"? (1 Viewer)

My son is looking forward to this so we'll be watching. I like most of the cast and the production looks like it's top notch so I'm hopeful.

I've always felt these kind of shows are racist. People are whining about whites playing Egyptians, yet we get an all black cast for 'The Wizard of Oz'?

seriously??
Yes. Oh yeah, that's right, blacks are never racists and whites can't be on the receiving end of racism. Carry on
The reason this show exists is because systematic racism excluded blacks from almost every other musical.

I only objected to the part where Dorothy now says "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Compton anymore."
Lol. Maybe they should remake 'Roots' with white people.
Wizard of Oz is about white slavery?
It's about white people from Kansas...

Never understood the "racism" aspect. For decades, every show was near 100% white and today most are still 75% white.

It comes across as disingenuous. Trying to make a statement by making the cast all black. Why? You can't have it both ways. You can't say it's racist when it's an all-white cast, but not racist when it's an all black cast. Just mix it up and put the best people in it.

The Wiz is a retelling of the classic story from the perspective of modern black culture using soul music. What you're saying here makes no sense.

Black people don't live in Kansas?

KD, you know you don't have to watch this, right?
I know. It looks pretty terrible, so there's no way I will. Sorry, I just get worked up when people whine about racism, yet promote it in an 'accepted' way. Frustrating when you feel racism is the antidote for racism.

Not many...

It all depends on on this key question for me: in the original Broadway show, the Scarecrow song was "Born on the Day Before Yesterday", written by Quincy Jones, which was my favorite tune in the musical, a sort of quasi-gospel melody with some funk thrown in. But when the Diana Ross film cast Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, the King of Pop insisted on his own song which was entirely forgettable and ruined that movie for me.

So are they returning to the original song or leaving in the crappy Michael replacement? Nothing is more important.

There's a lot of irony in complaining about people whining about white people playing Egyptians and then immediately whining about black people playing characters in the Wizard of Oz.

You do understand there's a big difference between a movie like Roots and a movie where the original characters were white but their race had zero to do with the plot, right?

:lmao: casting a black cast to play characters in a movie where race isn't at all an important detail in the story isn't racist.

Why do you think the wizard of oz is about white people?

Well, it's based in Kansas, deals with a white farm family and includes many aspects related to Kansas and farms. The characters are drawn on many actual figures in America at the time. The Scarecrow is supposed to represent a Midwest farmer and so on. So yes, that's how it was originally done. Now, it does have broad appeal, but every story does. Even narrowly culturally defined stories have broad appeal and can be applied to anyone.

What is racist is saying that it's OK for a group historically discriminated against can have a pass now and can't be guilty of racism today. I'm speaking of society in broad terms here, not a narrow entertainment one. We should speak out against all racism and its many forms. It's not as though it can only go from the majority to the minority.

You do know that the show on tv is a revival of a 1970s musical?

And not just a 70s musical, either. Its a funk musical. Think back to George Clinton, the American Basketball Association, and :fro: . We're talking about easing on down the road here.
