Who's the next Tony Romo, top ten FF QB (1 Viewer)

Dirty Hairy

Tony Romo's quick ascension taught me to better know the backup QB's.

Tony Romo was unrostered in virtually every league behind Bledsoe when the season started.

He then emerged as a top ten QB when given the opportunity.

Who are the candidates who are currently backups but have the potential to become top ten guys?

I still think Troy Smith has potential. If he hadn't gotten sick, I think he'd have been the Ravens' starter this year.

I'd like to see the Vikings trade for him.

Matt Moore has some potential.

I like the Kolb pick is well.

I have both of these guys on my taxi squad in a dynasty league.

Another good one would be Henne in Miami.

Rosenfels is my top choice but he is hardly a no-name. He could likely get a Schaub type opportunity next year.

Seneca Wallace is my next choice because he has performed relatively well last year and this year. He was mostly unrostered at the beginning of the year, especially when SEA acquired Frye and Wallace took practice snaps at WR while Frye seemed to be the backup.

The next guy is more like Romo - Matt Moore, Carolina's backup to Delhomme. Actually he is third on the depth chart with McCown the backup currently but I attribute that to Moore being injured the first six games this year and still catching up. Carolina felt so good about Moore after he filled in for Delhomme last year that they had no intention of adding another QB until Moore's injury. This is pretty telling imo.

In terms of "replacing an ineffective starter"....I can't think of anyone.

In terms of "replacing an injured starter", I'd go with the following:

Kevin Kolb (Philly)

Matt Leinart (Arizona)

Billy Volek (San Diego)

Chris Redman (Atlanta)

Josh McCown (Carolina)

Mark Brunell (Joey Harrington??) (New Orleans)

David Carr (Giants)

The nature of these guys is that they rise from the most bleak situations imaginable and are NOT people you'd point to as likely candidates. Somebody like Stanton. From completely out of nowhere.

Uhhh..... Tony Romo didn't exactly get handed a squad full of scrubs. There were people calling for him to start in front of Bledsoe that year anyway.

I'm gonna throw out the name: Brett Ratliff. I think he overtakes Clemons......5 years from now when I retire. :goodposting:

Matt Cassel?

He is a free agent this summer -- could wind up in a good opportunity like MIN, KC, SF...

Thats who I would have my eyes on.

Can't believe I'm the first person to mention Brady Quinn.
Deeper or dynasty/keeper leagues he was rostered, and a lot of people have been adding him, waiting for DA to get benched.I remember watching Romo that preseason (led the NFL in yards, but who cared...), and I just couldn't get over undrafted/small school/solid vet in front of him. Stashed him in a deep dynasty league, but like a dumbo took Bledsoe in a redraft.Everyone assumes Orlovsky's will fail miserably - come on, the idiot ran out of the back of the end zone in his first game! He played at Connecticut, not exactly a first rate program.Check it out, though...3 solid QB ratings in 3 starts, zero/zip/zilch/nada turnovers, got a beast of a receiver he will chuck it to, confident Megatron will win any battle. He's no Romo - doesn't have multiple weapons or great O-line, so it's not gift wrapped like it was for Tony, but this kid could be a decent pickup.

Matt Cassel = Scott Mitchell II. Someone's going to overpay for him and then he'll flop. To answer the OP's question, the guys I'd put at the front of the list are:KolbHenneThigpenStantonBrennan (it'll be a few years, like e.g. Schaub)Ratliff (it'll be a couple of years)Josh Johnson (it'll be a couple of years)

Yeah, you were the first person to mention a high profile former first round pick who's probably overdue to start in a thread about non-rostered QB sleepers. Great work.

Brennan (it'll be a few years, like e.g. Schaub)
Oooh. I like this one. He kind of reminds me of Drew Brees.
I think Romo is actually a better comparison, right down to the three-quarters or sidearm delivery. Brennan (in limited preseason action, to be sure) seems as did Romo like the NFL stage is not too big for him and that he has that "it" factor. Now, he's very raw and they're remaking his mechanics in a lot of ways, but Zorn is an ideal guy to be coaching him to do that. I think Brennan is the kind of guy who could get traded in 2010 or 2011 and start for a team that acquires him, again a bit like Schaub. Keep one thing in mind about Brennan as well - he's old for a rookie, having just turned 25.

when you say who is the next Tony Romo ... which one are you talking about?

I can only assume you are talking about the one who is a kitty cat. one who chokes in the playoffs. one who is not commited to his team.

I hope no one will be that next Tony Romo.

Carr? :lmao: from Texan fan

When was the last time a Baltimore QB was a top-15 fantasy player?
The best thing to happen to Smith may be Flacco's emergence as the franchise QB. The hope for Smith would be that he goes elsewhere and gets a shot, but that's going to be a hard road given that IIRC not every NFL team thought of him as a NFL QB (as opposed to a WR) coming out of college.

I didn't think that was the question.
Smith is awfully talented, but is he better suited to becoming a RB or WR?! he's a physically gifted individual..ala Vick, I'm not sure QB is the best position for Smith to play at the pro level..

Edited the post description to clarify "unrostered in dynasty leagues".Anybody agree with Matt Moore, CAR QB

Bumping this to kick start some more recent conversation. I know nothing about Josh Johnson. Matt Moore seems to be at least two or three years off, as Delhomme is only 33. I think I like Henne's situation the best, but he's a couple of years off as well.
