who's this year's willis? (1 Viewer)

There isn't one who will win the tackle title but Lofton is the best rookie in my opinion. Mayo and Rivers aren't far behind though.

Are you one of those guys who doesn't show up until just before the season? We've been debating this for awhile now.

i check in every once in a while, but i wanted to wait until a week or so before my draft before really worrying about it.

OK. Early it seemed Lofton and Dizon were the top picks even though many though Mayo had the most talent. Now it apears it's Lofton, Rivers and Mayo. I doubt most think any are better than Willis. I doubt any wins the tackle title but may come close. I like Lofton in the middle with Brooking moving back to WLB.

Rivers gets my vote to lead all rookie LB in tackles this year. However that could all change if Lofton somehow becomes 3 down backer early. Both he and Lofton should see ample tackle ops.

I am taking Mayo in the end. I think he will do it all like Willis and they are very similar in the end. And if the league rewards for big plays even remotely that Mayo is the guy. I think Rivers is close behind Mayo as he will do it all also in the end. Problem is he is the only LB there and that could impede him a little. But a big front end should help. I think Lofton is way behind these guys. He is a run stuffer and will come out on 3rd downs as Boley and Brooking are the main guys there. Add in the talent level is not near the top 2 and I dont think the situation is as good either. Plus took him 3 weeks to beat out Tony"Who" Taylor which does not bode well for me either. Dizon is an afterthought now and I dont think even draftable in redraft leagues. Be lucky to see the field this year with his performance.

Another reason or Mayo over Rivers is the successful LB's have come from the inside the last 2 years. Ryans and Beason are MLB in 4-3 while Willis and Harris are ILB in 3-4. Rivers is an outside LB

I would definitely say - noone.

I think 2008 will prove to be a very bad year for picking rookie LBers for FF purposes. 2009 should be much better.

I dont know if I can agree with this. If Laurintis and Rey M had come out, would they have gone ahead of Mayo and Rivers. I just dont know. Clase but too close to call in the end. Mayo brought what New England was looking for and I think they still go with him. Rivers was better than Rey anyways. Next years crop is deeper if anything but top end talent is pretty equal. Kind of like the previous years

I believe you would be in the minority on this. It's obviously conjecture at this point, but the consensus of experts I read had Laurinaitis and Maualuga as the first two LB's taken had they come out this year. Solidly ahead of Rivers and Mayo. That's not even mentioning the Brian Cushing's and Sean Lee's, etc who will provide depth in the 2009 draft. In addition, unlike those at the top of the 2008 draft class, Laurinaitis and Maualuga both project as classic MIKE's which increases the likelihood that one or both could have more of a Willis/Ryans type impact if the situation & opportunity is right.

I don't see anyone in this class who is as good fantasy wise as the top 3 from last year. I would like Mayo more if he played for a different team. I really like his talent though.

I don't think anyone is close to the talent level of Willis in this class.

Well - while that's entirely possible (that Maualuga and Laurinatis would have been chosen after Mayo or Rivers), even if I very much doubt it, I think 2008 is an extremely bad year for LBers in FF of two reasons:1. The obvious lack of top flight talent in the class2. The talent that was to be found ended up in awful places.3. There is yet a player to present himself as a true riser (DeMeco Ryans, Jon beason), that title may still be won of course.Of all the FF IDP drafts I've been in four players have been picked relatively early Rivers, Dizon, Mayo and Lofton. Right now I hear only Mayo and Lofton are in fact starting and it's far from sure if these guys will still be playing sparingly. As everyone already know New England LBers are seldom primed for FF success (at least not early in their careers) and Lofton may be too limited to play on passing downs. Rivers hasn't been able to break the lineup in Cincy which is truly remarkable and Dizon may not be that great after all (there was a lot of hype surrounding to win the job by default). I stayed away from LBers in all drafts apart from one where I took a chance on Dan Connor.Silly me... :goodposting: (I didn't sign him to a contract in the end so it was a waste of a pick)

My understanding is that Rivers has secured the starting WLB spot in Cincy.

The only question seemed to be whether he would be an every down LB and remain in the lineup in the nickel (which almost surely will be the case - but because of the holdout he was obviously behind in the pre-season and they were easing him in).
