This is my 14th year in FF and I was thinking the other day, for every Manning, Gonzo, Fitzgerald, what about players who were either studs (or at least highly coveted starters) only to disappear in short order? I'm not talking about one week wonders a la Frisman Jackson. I'm thinking of players who were comets. Consistent studs for 1-3 seasons and then poof, nothing. I'm not even saying they had short careers, just short fantasy relevance.

I don't really mean "Where are they now?" I could google stats and be reminded "Oh yeah, he's in jail" or "Right, he lost a leg in a trombone accident." Who makes you think "Oh yeahhhh! I remember that guy!"

Here's my first pass at a line-up (and I have no criteria, no comparison, these are off the top of my head in my fading memory).

QB - Elvis Grbac (Culpepper probably counts here too, but Grbac seems more fleeting)

RB - Charlie Garner

RB - Domanick Davis

WR - David Boston

WR - Derrick Alexander

TE - Bubba Franks (there's got to be a better one here)

Who else?

Sean Alexander comes to mind. So does Priest Holmes. Or Terrell Davis who fell off the cliff of an otherwise Hall of Fame pace.

QB: Scott Mitchell, Chris Miller, Bobby Hebert

WR: Javon Walker

Kevin "1 Week Wonder" Ogeltree.

Seriously, though the Dom Davis call is solid.

I'd throw Cooley in at TE - he was looking like the next great TE, then *poof* (him and maybe Winslow pre-injury).

A long list of Shanny Denver RBs could also go here (O.Gary, Tatum Bell, etc.)

Mendenhall was going to be the next great Steeler RB - then he got hurt and was gone.

Anthony Gonzo of Indy - couldn't stay healthy.

Peyton Hillis was awesome in PPR leagues when he first came out and now he is fantasy irrelevant.

Hillis is a great recent example. And yeah, Mike Anderson/Olandis Gary/Tatum Bell all came to mind too. Was Mendenhall the one who took a dump in his girlfriend's laundry? That's got to jinx you somehow.

this was my first thought, along with Tebow. from a fantasy perspective, the guy won me a fantasy league. but that didn't last long after Denver traded him

Javon Walker and D.Davis are good calls.

I'll add

WR Muhsin Muhammad

RB Steve Slaton

RB Travis henry

WR Chris Chambers

RB Cadillac Williams

Shaun Alexander was in the league 9 years only mattered for 5.

RB James Stewart as well

Marc Boerigter would have to at least be part of the squad. 8 TD's out of nowhere in his rookie year, seemed destined for the stars and then BAM... nada.

Garner was Top 20 for four seasons in a row, so if we are sticking to 1-3 then he obviously wouldn't fit the mold. A few WR that came to mind . . . Ed Mccaffrey, Peerless Price, Kevin Curtis, Drew Bennett, Rocket Ismail. Sure there are countless others.

Don Majkowski for QB... I remember when he was a 1st round pick.

ETA: Christian Okoye another one.

WR - Marty Booker

Kellen Winslow Jr. Gotta disagree with Derrick Alexander, he had a good, albeit not great, career with crap QB's throwing to him.

Billy Volek won a ton of people their fantasy championships. 3 game run where he was the best QB in history. Then, nothing.

2004/13: 21-35/269, 3 TD, 2 INT

2004/14: 29-43/426, 4 TD, 0 INT

2004/15: 40-60/492, 4 TD, 1 INT

Samkon Gado and Steve Slaton.

Two guys with incredible single seasons, then into the ether the followwing.

Clinton Portis too. I ended up having to drop him in a ton of dynasty leagues. Never thought the cliff would come as fast as it did.

Tim Tebow

Cam Cleeland

Alexander is totally not in the same realm as others.

Five years in a row of 16+ TDs. and an NFL MVP.
Thats my point... Half his career, elite stud MVP, other half did not matter one little bit.

While he is not in the 3 year window of people who play 6 years as OP stated, he is in the 4-5 year window for those who play 9-10 years.

Gado had 7 good weeks. Put him in with Billy Volek as WW gems who won people FF championships.

Mushin Muhommed had one awesome season with Smith out, and people overpaid for him for years. That is a comet who faded quickly. Slayton was a 1 season wonder, couldn't get over fumbling.

My 2 lasting memories of Michael Jackson:

1)Tom Jackson on NFL Primetime during his highlights ("hee hee")

2) one year, for one game, he changed his last name to Dyson (I forget why), but this caused all kinds of confusion in the pre-Internet, manual scoring using the newspaper era. "Who's this Dyson guy that caught a TD? Did Michael Jackson even play yesterday?"
