Why do we have kickers in Fantasy Football? (1 Viewer)

I also happen to think there is some value to determining kicker matchups. While aggregate points may be very fluky (so top kicker pick may not accrue highest total points at the end of the season... though, of course, this is not at all unique to kickers), week-to-week one can often make pretty good guesses as to how kickers will perform.

I hate kickers-the last 2 weeks in one league I've got nothing but XPs in one league. There is no way of predicting whether a kicker will get an opportunity. I grabbed Cundiff this week but will he get an chance for field goals this week vs Atlanta? Nobody knows. At least ath the other positions you have an idea where the opponents rush defense or pass defense ranks.

How so? What specifically made it the best thing ever?
I won't even try to argue the predictability point on this one (even though I believe that both kickers and defense results each week are more random than other positions). But in a dynasty league, in which we award contract years to our players, no kicker or defense ever had more than a 1 year deal placed on them. Ever. That was evidence enough that they added no value to the competition in the league week to week - no one valued them enough to sign them long-term. Instead everyone tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to play matchups each week via the waiver wire, especially as the defenses were concerned. By eliminating the positions we now focus solely on positions in which players are routinely signed longer-term.Even though many in the league argued against the change before we made it, everyone is now on board and no one has ever said they miss having either roster spot to strategize with.

I can't say I'd MISS having kickers, but I'll agree with the guy above that said it adds a level of excitement. The reason I like K is because it's the only position where you KNOW something's about to happen. The Falcons stall on the 25, I know Bryant will be lining it up for another 5 pts. It makes that phase of the game entertaining so I really can't see a reason to do away with it. If you're looking to eliminate randomness - I'd suggest chess.
 Kickers are totally random, but they do add a little something to the game. This is my first year streaming kickers, and I've started a different kicker every week for the most part. There is a little bit of fun in trying to figure out which K from the WW will put up good numbers that week. Results have been mixed for me but it's just another entertaining aspect of fantasy football.
Agreed. Use them as a heat check if for nothing else. This week I am dropping Vinatieri and rolling with Connor Barth just to see if I'm as hot as I think I am.

We start 2 kickers and give big points for a long fg but also subtract points for missed fg's (depending on the size depends how much you can gain/lose, up to 5 each way).

Starting more kickers makes it a challenge...you always see certain guys near the top.

I agree that we should eliminate kickers. Our league has a scoring system based on length of FG's to make it interesting.

I went back to our league for 2009 and looked at the difference between the #1 kicker and the #10 and the average weekly advantage of one over the other. The total points by the #1 kicker was 158 versus the #10 kicker at 126 points. That's exactly 2 points per week.

Now that may make a difference to an owner on a weekly basis, but I doubt it.

I looked at the other positions to get a gage of their differences:

QB 7.37

RB 5.25 (not counting Chris Johnson's abnormally high point total)

RB 14.375(counting C Johnson)

WR 4.56

TE 4.12

TD 3.75

We don't play a mandatory TE, but I would rather have that than a kicker. You can gain more of an advantage there over other owners.

Kickers are like socks or underwear, I change them all the time.

Then you simply need to find a way to increase the variable.

Last night marks the 4th game in a row my kickers(Gould,Nugent,K Brown, Cundiff) have gone without a field goal. Cundiff who had 9 field goals in his previous 3 games had no attempts last night. Kickers suck, get them off of fantasy football starting lineups.

Maybe it's just that you suck. I had Bryant last night so kickers rock.

Same reason the NFL allow that extra pt attempt after every touchdown, it might not be much but it could make a difference in close games. Besides Kickers are good for an extra roaster spot during bye week.

1. There's no way of predicting whether a receiver will get an opportunity either.2. You can easily find out how many K points teams give up as well.

The best justification I can see is that they force owners to drop a player for bye week filler--thus, churning rosters and making more players available on waivers.

If you think having PK's are bad, try a league using Punters  Now that there is fun I don't care who you are
I took over a team earlier this year that uses punters. Their scoring is almost entirely based on #punts inside the 20. Which is basically impossible to predict. :lmao:
