Look, I'm not saying that the Wildcat is going to be around for years to come, or that even if it does, it's because of this, but just hear me out.
Go back to 1900-the 1940's. NFL offenses are running the single wing formation and the power running game is dominating the way offenses are ran. For decades this kind of play goes on and teams counter it by loading up on personnel who are made to stop the run first and foremost. Stronger, heavier, and slower players. Then sometime after WWII, teams realize that by making a few changes to their offensive personnel, they can take advantage of these larger and slower players on the perimeter by passing the ball. The rest is history and the passing game that we know of today is born.
Now skip to today. NFL offenses are airing out the ball more than ever in 4 and 5 wide sets every week. GMs take notice and invest more in faster and more agile players but who are also inherently weaker. Enter the Wildcat. Teams have all this money invested in their secondary who are meant to shut down/contain the passing game. You can sub these guys out and replace them with more LBs, linemen, etc., but teams don't have the depth that's necessary to feel comfortable doing this, especially against a team that has built it's personnel to run such an offense.
All this said, I don't think the Wildcat will take hold as long as teams are plugging in RBs and WRs and Michael Vicks and Pat Whites are in there. RBs and WRs aren't used to making the kind of option reads necessary with the Wildcat nor are they going to be effective passers. In fact, most are probably effective enough to make opposing teams kind of sort of respect the pass. And while mobile QBs like Vick and White will make you respect their arm more than a RB, they're not built to run between the tackles like is necessary with the Wildcat. But put someone who is smart, can pass the ball moderately well (but not at the level of a NFL QB), and is built like a tank with the ability to run between the tackles and you might have a force to be reckoned with. Yeah, I'm talking about Tim Teebow. The guy, as sick of him as I am, seems absolutely perfect for this offense. He can't pass the ball great, but he can throw it better than Ronnie Brown I guarantee. And he may not have the breakaway ability of Vick or White, but he can sure as hell pound the ball between the tackles better than any of them. To me, he was made for it. And he will be entering the NFL at the perfect time to capitalize on it.
