Why is breast cancer the NFLs disease of choice? (1 Viewer)

I am sure..or I know that all of us here have been touched by a disease that has taken away family members and friends with myself included. I was in TheDicks Sports and already the "Pink" NFL gear is out. Again it will be a whole month with pink spikes and pink gloves and whatever. I know it is a good cause... But why?

Should the NFL have a "Stamp out Cancer Month?" Including all cancers. Or should November be ALS month? December prostate awareness month? How did breast cancer get its own month with the NFL?

I am all in on all cancers being fought.

Who are these people that don't understand how charities work? I mean, come on. Do you have a better idea how to solve the worlds problems?

Almost as bad as Black History Month. :hophead:

Breast CA has the highest incidence in the US. It used to kill MANY more people. Increased awareness, prevention, and early detection has been the key to dropping the death rates. Breast CA Awareness is why. One of the only cancers that can actually be cured if found in time.

Seeing as how mostly men watch football and detecting prostate cancer is easy you would think that would be something they would want to raise awareness about. Their whole "pink" thing is nothing more than playing to the and trying to attract a larger female crowd.

You got it.

It is a good effort towards a good cause though.

For awareness, yes. Not sure how much more awareness this campaign has actually brought though. And IIRC, funds through sales of merchandise are a joke. They'll sell some $2 shirt made in Singapore for $100 and give $1 to ACS.

Because the NFL has a long history of caring about women's issues. :sarcasm:

Just kidding, I guess it's because they want to sell more merchandise to women.

It was Deangelo Williams that got the NFL to get involved. He has now lost several aunts and even his mom to breast cancer IIRC. It's really blown up from what he was asking for which was permission to wear the pink stuff. It caught on as it was good marketing for the NFL to women and has blown up from there.

It is a good cause without a doubt and should get its due. The more I read about how The Komen has evolved the more it just has turned into a big business like MADD.

The fact is though many players, many people have lost friends and family members to other forms of this disease, and many other diseases. Diabetes untreated is one of the biggest killers in black communities. I help a friend one weekend a month in Detroit, he gets food, clothes, furniture or whatever for families in need. The amount of people I see missing limbs from Diabetes is appalling. Cardio disease is a huge killer if untreated. How can the NFL single out one month for just one form of any disease?

Can't really do everything. Businesses tend to pick one thing they are going to do and run with it the NFL does the same. Of course individual teams/players also do other charities. For instance Steve Smith has a charity he works with that gives shoes and book bags to needy kids. Jordan Gross has an annual kickball tournament for Cystic Fibrosis.

I used to ref football with this guy who was livid about this campaign every year and hated the pink gear. Now granted he was about the most sexist guy I've ever met and probably borderline insane, but his rant was about how breast cancer is a known side effect of birth control pills and that is the only reason it is such a widespread problem. He was also a devout Catholic.

That said. I have found it quite odd myself and wondered why so much emphasis is put on this one disease. I could see devoting a weekend or something, but a whole month and entire lines of clothing/accessories? I get the money grabbing angle, but it still seems very excessive.

Aren't there any diseases related to firm round glutes we could devote some time to for the other guys?

The NFL became involved in taking part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2008. During the month of October stadiums passed out pink ribbons to fans, and coaches and game day staff wore pink ribbons. DeAngelo petitioned the NFL the following year (2009) to let the players wear pink cleats. The NFL obliged, and this led to the players being able to wear other pink items. This was big coming from the NFL who are sticklers about what the players can wear. I like that the NFL participates in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I think that it is strange that some have a problem with it.

The NFL is affiliated more with the American Cancer Society during Breast Cancer Awareness Month than Komen. The NFL's A Crucial Catch Campaign with the American Cancer Society has raised a lot of money for screenings, awareness, etc.

I don`t think anyone has a problem with it, but how can the NFL say no to other diseases/causes that come knocking?

I've seen negative comments in the Shark Pool several times about the NFL supporting BCA Month. You felt the need to start this thread about it.

What diseases/causes are they saying no to?
Brandon Marshall:

Marshall, who has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, wanted to wear green kicks during a game on October 10 in support of Mental Health Awareness Week, which ran from October 6 to 12. The NFL fined him $10,500 for violating uniform protocol (a fine which Marshall happily paid and then matched with a donation to charity). The NFL is so pink-centric that one player wearing a pair of shoes for a different cause was seen as something worthy of punishment. Initially, the league even looked to prevent Marshall from playing entirely if he sported the green shoes, before relenting and settling on just a fine.

How can they NOT say no? There are a bajillion causes out there. Most businesses, and even individuals, have their one pet cause that they devote most of their effort to...I don't see anything wrong with that.

They did not say no to Brandon Marshall, because he never asked them for permission to wear the green cleats. He got exactly what he wanted by wearing them, which was attention which brought awareness to his cause.

My employer has a big push each March for Harvest for Hunger. It seems to be their charity. They also do United Way, but I think everyone does that.

whenever i am feeling like I am a cynical #######, I can count on the FFA to make me feel better about myself.

It is odd since cancer is known to kill more men than women in just about every type of cancer identified.

But who cares...we're men, right?

My only hope is that they'll find a cure for breast cancer and maybe it'll lead to curing the rest.

Part of the problem I think is that a lot of people want to divide Sunday up into thinking about others and "me" time.

The early morning is about helping others. They get up early, get dressed up, go to church for an hour, internalize a sermon, give money to the church, and maybe even help out a little before, during, or after the mass. Sunday morning is community outreach time. In exchange, some people want 3 hours of "me" time in the afternoon where they just indulge in some football and not feel guilty or sad about anything.

The pink October month in the NFL throws off the balance and probably rubs people the wrong way because of it. It'd be better if the pink October month was tied to the Sunday morning church services instead of the afternoon football.
