Why is Matt Schaub ranked so high? (1 Viewer)

Why is Matt Schaub ranked so high in dynasty rankings when he is a backup quarterback and a restricted fee agent after this season. I really don't see the Falcons letting him go anywhere. Shouldn't guys like Kellen Clemens, Tavarious Jackson, Andrew Walter, etc be ranekd above Schaub because they have legitimate shots to start? Am I missing something?

Just wondering because I am participating in a brand new dynasty draft and I am taking my third quarterback with my next pick.

Because he's considered the most likely guy to put up numbers if he gets his shot. He's also the most likely guy for another team to go out and trade for- especially next season, because Atlanta probably won't be able to resign him (since he knows he's stuck behind Vick), and because it's unlikely they can franchise him and trade him after next season- because who would want Schaub if he was making the average of the top-5 QBs in the NFL?I wouldn't be surprised to see Atlanta deal him next year, since that'll be their last chance to get something in return for him, and if rumor is to be believed, they could get quite a bit of something at that. Even if not, the speculation is that Schaub is more likely to put up numbers if he DOES start than Walter is. The thing about Walter and Company is that you have to worry about whether their team is going to go out and DRAFT a QB next year- whereas with Schaub, if anybody trades for him, you don't have to worry about him not being the starter.

That's the reasoning behind it. I don't necessarily agree with it (Billy Volek, anyone?), but that's the thinking.

I believe that Shaub is a RFA after this year and Atlanta will tender him at the highest level ie Atlanta would get a 1st and 3rd if another team tried to sign him. They would also have to pay Shaub in the neighborhood of 1.5 M to 2 M.

But like Brandon Lloyd this year, Atlanta could trade him for less than a 1st and a 3rd if they wish. They have Vick under a long term contract so it makes sense that they would deal Shaub for a late 1st or a player. It real depends on how they feel about D.J. Shockley or another backup QBs ability to backup Vick.

Everybody, even Jim Mora, knows that Vick will never be a good QB. Matt can be a winner with the Falcons but PC wont let Jim bench Vick.

So as soon as Vick gets hurt, a new era can begin.

Well I have a question. I am in a 16 team dynasty draft and already have Byron Lefwtich and Phillip Rivers at quarterback. Who should I take as my third quarterback: Matt Schaub or David Gerrard? Clemens, Walter, and Jackson are gone.

There goes that member number theory.

I really wish Donahoe had drafted Schaub in the 3rd instead of giving up a 1st, 2nd, and 5th for Losman. They could have kept Bledsoe for an extra year and turned things over to Schaub for the upcoming season.

:sadbanana:

Schaub is on schedule to be a starter in 2008, or earlier if a team is willing to pony up a top pick for him. The Jets, Vikings, and Dolphins were all after his services in this off-season, but none could satisfy the Falcons asking price - he is too important to the team with Vick's likelihood of getting hurt. You will likely have to wait until 2007 or 2008 to get production from Walter, Clemens, or Jackson, and Schaub will be more seasoned than any of them - not to mention that we've seen he can hold his own, where the others are still complete unknowns.

Schaub will be a starting QB somewhere in the NFL in '07... '08 the latest.

...and I don't even think it's out of the realm of possiblities that it's in Atlanta. If Moss, TO and Culpepper can get traded, why not 'teflon man' Ron Mexico?

I agree with Bloom here and add a few other items:I have Schaub ranked where he is because he's (A) young (just turned 25), (B) capable (decent numbers when he has played, including a QB rating of 98.1 in '05) and © he has a high probability of playing some this season, and (D) he likely will be the most saught after QB this offseason.

Others in the neighborhood of where I have him ranked (without giving away the subscriber content) are unproven commodities or are in training camp battles for playing time (if any).

You're right, Vick will never be the kind of guy who can put up a 2:1 TD:Int ratio or 7+ yards per attempt. He's never going to go over 3500+ total yards, and he's not the type of guy who can get your team 24 TDs, either.Except for... you know... in 2002 when he put up 7 ypa, a 2:1 TD:Int ratio, 3600+ total yards and 24 TDs. Details.

With his contract, and potential, Vick will never leave Atlanta. That's why in 2007, Matt Schaub will be a starter elsewhere. If he goes to a good situation, he will be very solid.

when Schaub was drafted, the Rams were very upset that the Falcons scooped them. The coach was obviously Mike Martz.

It is possible he ends up in Detroit in 1-2 years if Martz is still there since Kitna is not the long term answer.

I don't think Martz is planning on being in Detroit for more than 1 to 2 years.

Schaub does seem to get a little too much love for a guy with a 49% completion percentage in limited action.
Bingo. I think some of his value may actually be a product of the West Coast offense being allowed to function in a more traditional sense. Personally, I don't think Mike Vick is being used properly, but when he's trying to use Mora's system, he doesn't do it much justice. He runs all over, slings the ball and makes some bad decisions, but that's the way Mike Vick is going to operate in a West Coast system. With Schaub, everyone is awestruck at how good the role players in ATL's offense actually are. Dunn can run, Crumpler can catch, and they're capable of moving the ball. This transformation isn't really a product of any stellar play on the part of Schaub, but more related to a 'traditonal' QB using the system the way it's designed to be used.

But regardless, I still think his fantasy value is very overblown. As someone already pointed out, Vick will most likely always start in ATL, and unless he's seriously injured, Schaub's average numbers over a short span aren't worth anything.
