And if his return isn't till after Thanksgiving?Hmmm I feel the opposite as I did trade Jackson who's in 4-man committee for a guy who will be a 3-down back upon his return. That's exactly what I'm thinking. He has been out a couple of weeks, and instead of getting a clearer timetable on when he'll be back, it is getting more vague. I get even more hesitant when a brittle player with questionable toughness then says he wants to be 100% when he comes back. Personally, I wouldn't trade a guy like Steven Jackson for him right now.I replaced Mathews With Mark Ingram (a guy whose arrival on the field is getting clearer instead of more hazy) in the offer.Yea. Unless its dynasty, there's way too much risk involves here with no time table.Guys, thank you. You just helped me decide to cancel an outstanding trade offer for Mathews.
Yea I'm holding Matthews and I already cut steven Jackson after his game against tampa bay. he had 54 yards and a td in probably his best matchup all season with half the bucs defense hurt and that was all he was able to do. To many people getting the ball in atlanta for Jackson to be relevant. When Matthews comes back at least he will get the majority of the work.Hmmm I feel the opposite as I did trade Jackson who's in 4-man committee for a guy who will be a 3-down back upon his return. That's exactly what I'm thinking. Donald Brown has been very unimpressive ... maybe an occasional 3rd down spell ... but if Mathews is healthy he gets at least 1/2 3DB, goal line, and bulk carries on a good offense ... shwing!Pretty sure the chargers didn't sign Donald Brown to sit on the bench. I can't see too much evidence Mathews would be a three down back when he comes back...whenever that might be. No timetable after a couple of weeks, especially with this player, my optimism shrinks.
donald brown may have just lost his job to brandon oliver, donald brown sucks. Im not saying mathews will get every touch but hes the goal line back and woodhead will no longer be the third down back. Sprained mcl isnt a major injury. Timeframe is typically 4-5 weeks. Dont think thats changed. SD is averaging 2 ypc. They need mathews back desperately as they are a potential playoff team.Pretty sure the chargers didn't sign Donald Brown to sit on the bench. he was an rb1 in the second half last year and that was WITH woodhead. His timetable hasn't changed. It was originally stated to be 4-5 weeks. Why would they give a definite return date this early? Mathews stated he won't return until he's 100 percent. Sjax was my 5th RB with no upside.Pretty sure the chargers didn't sign Donald Brown to sit on the bench. How many potential 3-down RBs are available in your league that you can get with a discount?Wow, too much implausible Mathews love for me in this thread. I'll check back in two weeks and see how "Mr. I'm waiting until I'm 100%" is doing.
Moreno was also slated to be out 4-5 weeks and he is on that time table which has been communicated. It has gone from 4-5 weeks for Mathews to no time table. His timetable hasn't changed. Brown is being given his chance and right now he's not doing anything with it. I see him as nothing more than a COP back when Mathews gets back.
I don't followAnd yes. Brown is a change of pace back. Which is why Mathews, if he comes back this year, will be a two down back, I'm thinking.
sorry but you sound like the irrational one here. Mathews was a top ten back in the second half last year... On a team that wants to run the ball... With a HOF QB... Who will get goal line touches... And play most third downs with woodhead hurt... Whos only competition is donal friggin brown who ####### sucks... Who has never been a thrid down back in his career so not sure why you think he will be all of a sudden... And you can get him for PENNIES (waivers, as a throw in, sjax whos worthless, etc). Even if you have to wait until November its still totally worth is as a stash. This is not rocket science. I dont even think mathews is some stud but hes a lock RB2 with RB1 upside and you can steal him for nothing and you dont want that? Thats how you win leagues. Not by playing guys like sjax or leaving him pm waivers for others to scoop up.Moreno was also slated to be out 4-5 weeks and he is on that time table which has been communicated. Why on God's green Earth would you roster McKinnon with Mathews available to begin with?!Dropping McKinnon for Matthews right now.
Please note that I said remotely serious. Leagues with only 3 bench spots don't count as remotely serious.Very true. My league's bench is only three spots deep. One of mine is filled with Gordon, the other two are Zak Stacy and DeAndre Hopkins. Both Mathews and Ingram are on the WW in our league as people are scrambling for RBs to fill bye weeks. Would Ingram or Mathews be a step up over Stacy? Schedule-wise, they are about the same. I would think Ingram has a step above both due to the talent on the team to take the focus away from the running game. SD's shaky OL has me concerned for him the rest of the way. Stacy just has some tough matchups coming with a young offense. Not sure what will happen there.Short bench + plethora of RB injuries/busts + 6 teams on byeHow is he on the waiver wire in any remotely serious leagues?! He hasn't even been dropped in any of my work/college buddies leagues. Some of those are only 10 team leagues.
Mathews was foolishly just dropped by an owner for bye week coverage, and he hasn't cleared waivers yet. Guess that bit of color could have helped. Point is, this may happen in leagues with short benches and/or owners who don't have the stomach to hold a guy through a multi-week injury. Also, the "knock" against Mathews being oft-injured persists in the minds of a lot other owners (this notion surfaced in this thread as well) which could cause a lot of people to lose faith. Why on God's green Earth would you roster McKinnon with Mathews available to begin with?!Dropping McKinnon for Matthews right now.

I don't buy it and have seen enough of Mathews running well this year to make me think he'll be valuable upon return. You can't wait on a guy like Mathews -- now is the time to scoop him if you are in a similar position.
I don't disagree.Wishful thinking
If you look at his last 8 weeks last year, he was a rb #1. I feel like I am stockpiling injured rbs. Hopefully they all come back strong and I can swing a trade.
If this Oliver kid keeps playing well, it may not end the same way it did last year, especially considering he's coming off a knee injury and not playing for a long time. Not the same situation as last year.If you look at his last 8 weeks last year, he was a rb #1. I feel like I am stockpiling injured rbs. Hopefully they all come back strong and I can swing a trade.
Do you think that's maybe because Oliver is basically the only RB on the roster now?SD hasn't had an everydown back since LT so it's gotta tell you what they think about Oliver.
Edit: Also, Mathews in his stay at SD, he never got goal line carries like Oliver.
I think people are getting a little carried away with Oliver. Mathews is still the more talented all around back.If Oliver keeps playing at a high level, will Mathews have a job when he comes back? I haven't compared any numbers yet, but the perception is that Oliver is doing a fantastic job as a UDFA Rookie - being described as a more powerful Sproles type of player. Would the team continue to ride the hot hand if/when Mathews returns?
Nope, even when Mathews had the potential to be the everydown back, they never used him in that sense. Yeah different coordinators but still, I think there's a reason why they don't utilize him that way. You're forgetting, it was Mathews, Ronnie Brown, and Jamaal McClain at one point and Mathews was being rotated with those other two scrubs.Do you think that's maybe because Oliver is basically the only RB on the roster now?SD hasn't had an everydown back since LT so it's gotta tell you what they think about Oliver.

Just for factual purposes, here are all the "goal to go" running plays by the Chargers since Mathews has been on the team:linkSD hasn't had an everydown back since LT so it's gotta tell you what they think about Oliver.

yep, hes a jokeStill quiet here. Going into week 6 of his 4-5 week injury and we still havent heard any news on his rehab. As far as we know he hasnt even ran yet?
His return from his high ankle sprain and broken collar bone were both on par. He's always been a slow healer.
