why peter king kind of bugs me (1 Viewer)

Two snippets from Peter King's current piece on SI.com. Key elements bolded.

Defensive Player of the Year

1. Champ Bailey, cornerback, Denver; 2. Julius Peppers, defensive end, Carolina; 3. (tie) Brian Urlacher, linebacker, Chicago, and Adalius Thomas, linebacker/defensive end/safety, Baltimore. Got your attention with the Thomas vote, didn't I? Well, when a guy plays all over the map (he lined up against Randy Moss for a snap at corner in Week 2) and leads a great defense with seven sacks, he deserves props.

Offensive Rookie of the Year

1. Marques Colston, wide receiver, New Orleans; 2. Marcus McNeill, left tackle, San Diego; 3. Jahri Evans, right guard, New Orleans. What? No Reggie Bush? Not with a 2.6-yards-per-carry average.

(end King)

You know, Pete, intelligent football fans long ago realized that Thomas is very good (and versatile), and intelligent football fans long ago recognized that Reggie Bush thus far hasn't come close to living up to the hype. It's annoying to read you describing these stories like you're blowing the lid off of them. Something doesn't become true the moment you write it, big guy. We were there weeks ago, where were you?

I don't know why I read his stuff every week. At some point this element seems to come into play every week, or he floats one idea too many without really thinking them through.

His fantasy advice every week is pretty funny, though. Unintentional comedy is often times the best comedy.

His Danny Wuerfell (sp) prediction when Spurrier arrived in Washington was probably one of the single worst predictions in the history of NFL internet media.

Recently - he predicted the Colts would only score 9 points against Denver two weeks ago. Brilliant...

I know the one of my league mates reads him religiously every Monday (and now Tuesday also). I read the column and then make trade proposals if possible based on the bad info. A few years ago I traded him William Green after a training camp column from King opined on how he would be a great RB in the NFL.

I like Peter King. I like his honesty, his tell it like it is journalism, his rapport with the players, etc. Nobody is perfect (re: the Wuerffel call among others) If you don't throw your line into the water, you're not going to catch anything. I agree that he is not the greatest fantasy soothsayer out there, but I don't have a problem at all with the journalist that he is.

I read his column every week, but I'm not sure if it's just for kicks anymore. He is without a doubt the worst I've ever seen with predictions. It's uncanny how inaccurate he is. And He should lay off the fantasy football angle altogether because he's absolutely clueless there.

Not only that, but his baseball tidbits are downright embarrassing. Remember the time he called Rob Mackowiak the next Travis Hafner? Oooff...

And then there are the things he just can't let go. You hate T.O. We get it. You can't stand Deion Sanders. OK, fine. But do we have to carp on it every week? It makes you look like an insecure school girl always griping about the same players week in and week out.

As far as football goes, he strikes me as a guy who can't see the big picture clearly because he's too close to the action. It seems like it's very hard for him to take a step back and see it for what it is. I don't think it helps that he's too much of an "insider" to give a balanced viewpoint either. It never hurts to keep just a bit of your outsider attitude even when you've made it.

I have do take issue you with on this one. If King has a "skill" in his NFL reporting, it's that he's very well connected to a variety of people in power. I think he does a good job getting official comment and inside information and then reporting on what he's heard. That's it. Unfortunately, I think that that's gone to his head a bit and that he fancies himself a good football analyst which he's not. If I'm looking for info from teams or their official comment on something, I'll pay some attention to him. If I'm looking for anything analytical regarding what happens on the field, I will actively avoid paying any attention to him.

When I read the subject of your post, I thought the answer would be:

"Because he's a know-it-all, annoying blowhard who informs us that water is wet."

I was only slightly wrong.

"kind of" bugs you?

You know, hector intelligent football fans long ago realized that King is a trainwreck.
