Outrage erupts after Wisconsin Guard member posts photo online Caption reads: 'We put the FUN in funeral'Outrage erupted across social media Monday after a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard posted a photo on Instagram that appeared to make light of funerals for fallen service members.

The photo depicts a group of soldiers, most smiling or in comedic poses, around a coffin draped with an American flag. The caption accompanying the photo says: "We put the FUN in funeral your fearless honor guard from various states."

People began posting screenshots and comments on the photo on the Wisconsin Army National Guard's Facebook page, prompting Guard officials to begin looking into the matter late Monday afternoon, according to Maj. Paul D. Rickert.

Comments ranged from anger and disgust to outrage and shock, with posters saying fallen soldiers and the American flag are off limits when it comes to humor.

Many also called for charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Rickert confirmed at least one of the people in the photo is a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard who recently took training to become a member of the Funeral Honor Guard unit.

"We take the responsibility given to members with respect to fallen soldiers very seriously and expect all soldiers assigned to (the unit) to perform their duties with honor and respect," Rickert said when reached by phone late Monday.

Rickert said officials decided to allow people to express their outrage, including reposting screenshots of the photo, on the Wisconsin Army National Guard's Facebook page.

"We're allowing people to vent their frustrations over this very serious matter," he said.

Rickert said he could not confirm if others posing in the photo are actual Guard members or that an official investigation into the matter had been launched.

Yeah, pretty stupid. It doesn't sound like there was, but there had better not have been an actual solider in that coffin.
I believe it was training in Arkansas for funeral honor details. The soldier who posted the photo is from the WI National Guard but the others posing in the photo are from around the country I believe. She is taking a lot of wrath for her posting. Not sure about the others posting in the photo.Perhaps even more disgusting is her comments on another photo complaining about the cold weather at a soldiers funeral and how it will affect the folding of the flag.

From another story on it:

The matter in question appears to have stemmed from a private Instagram account. It shows a woman, who appears to be in the Honor Guard, taking selfies and complaining about the cold weather. The text that goes along with the picture reads, "Somebody's getting a jacked up flag."

Another picture shows a group of guard members huddled around a flag-draped casket and posing. It's captioned with, "We put the FUN in funeral--your fearless honor guard from various states..."

There is also another picture that shows the Honor Guard member getting ready to eat a meal at a funeral. She called it "tailgating."

I was part of the Honor Guard at Pope AFB. It is one of the most solemn duties there are. You are burying and honoring a fallen comrade in arms. This is truly serious business. If the photo is real everyone in it should be off the duty immediately. Training or not it shows incredibly poor judgement. This duty is an honor and a privilege. They just lost that privilege IMO.

I also think a posting in Afghanistan will cure her of any humorous notions she has relating to this stuff.

Having spent a month doing honor guard as an extra duty, this is terrible. Burying people is serious business, and the honors tradition carries a lot of meaning for those left behind.
