Wife lost her iPhone 5....now what? (1 Viewer)

I say lost but I we think she left it on top of the car, it fell out in a parking lot, and someone stole it. Anyway, she did have a passcode on it so that's good. I called it initially and it rang twice before going to voicemail. An hour later, it went straight to voicemail which makes me think someone grabbed it and turned it off. She didn't have the "find my iPhone" feature turned on. She reported it stolen on the iCloud and I reported it stolen with AT&T so it can't be used (we have a shared plan on AT&T). I also had her change all of her passwords (e-mail, banking apps, etc.).

Anything else we should be doing?

She's going to the store first thing tomorrow and will try to get an iPhone 6 with the same phone number.

Well if your wife is going to get a phone upgrade after doing something stupid, the least you should get to do is,

Sleep with the phone salesperson (hopefully female).

AT&T should be able to tell you it's last location. Did did they mention anything about that?

Outside of that, everything else you did was spot on.

I got a white one, in excellent condition (was in a case from day 1) for sale if she needs a replacement. It's a Sprint model.

Nah, they said they can't locate it if it's off.

Thanks. She's bummed but life goes on.
I figured they'd be able to, at the very least, identify its last known location. If data was being sent through their networks (e.g. apps in the background), I have to imagine they have GPS info right before it turned off. But I could be entirely wrong too. GL GB.

I don't think they carry that much meta data. GPS might only get sent to the carrier when you make an emergency call, not 100% sure on that. They usually can tell you the last towers it pinged which can get you fairly close but nowhere near as close as gps.

How much? Father in law shattered his screen last week. He was rocking a hand me down EVO. I've got him on the Ting plan with data and texting shut off. He's 74 and doesn't know how to use any of that stuff. But he likes a smartphone because the text on the dial pad is large and he can see the numbers.

Plus he likes the camera.

Or if you have any other old Sprint smartphones, I'm interested.

Teachable moment. First, she shouldn't be rewarded with an upgrade for being irresponsible. Activate an old flip phone for her to use for a few months until she proves she can take care of her phone.

I hear you, but this is a first. She'll be more careful now. Part of the problem was that she had a much smaller purse that day and her phone wouldn't fit in it. She had to hold it in her hand separately. At least she was smart enough to have a passcode on the phone. That is something I've never done but will now.

This wouldn't have happened if it were an Android.. valuable lesson here.
Please explain this.
grip is better on most android phones leading to a high rate of hold in the average purse, pocket, or car top, thus leading to a lower loss rate.
Lol! I thought maybe there was a built in phone locator that was always on or something else in the os that would have helped after the fact.

JC--it's his wife, not a child. People make mistakes. Move on.
