Will Brady be.... Brady? (1 Viewer)

I was just wondering from a fan perspective. Tom Brady, with a limited amount of years has catapulted himself to the greats. He is no further then Montana, Elway, Namath or any other elite quarterback to play in the NFL (and this is coming from a Giants fan). I respect Tom Brady for all he has done for the game, and it is a lot. Personally, I think he is one of the greatest to play the position. After reading many posts about how they should trade him or franchise tag Cassell seems absolutely crazy to me. This guy is a stud... BUUUUTTTT... if he misses another season.. will he still be Tom Terrific? I'm not sure anybody can really be subjected to a two year lay off and still be the same player. Does anybody think it would be in his best interest to just retire if he cannot physically contribute next season?... what is there left to prove?

I'll reply to my own thread because I would sincerely like to keep wise-crack answers away from this. I understand his health is up in the air, it's not a definite that he is behind schedule... but it's not a definite that he is on schedule. I'm just thinking aloud, so join me.

WAY too much money to be made to even fathom the possibility of retirement. WAY too much.

Plus, what information is there that this injury is career threatening?

I have heard several interviews with Brady and he has regularly mentioned that there was way more for him to do with his life than play football. One potential avenue down the road was politics. As for the money element, if he proceeds and marries his supermodel girlfriend, she makes substantially more money each year than he does. So the necessity to bring home the bacon falls out of the mix. Not saying that his contract and endorsements are chump change or that Brady would be happy letting his wife rack up the coinage, but the need likely won't be there. There is nothing currently that suggests his injuries or potentially required surgeries would be career threatening, but at one point they could have been life threatening (had the infection continued to worsen which it looks like it hasn't). I think people are saying missing 2 full yaers and getting into his 30s that he might elect to just calli t a day instead ofhaving to get into football shape and potentially be less mobile with sone eroded skills. From what I have heard, Brady is going stir crazy wanting to get back on the field. Whether that is propaganda and a front for him becoming complacent or disinterested in playing is always a remote possibility, but I doubt it. I think he is getting tired of walking Gisele's dog in Central Park. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Jim Plunkett had an interesting career, not exactly a direct parallel to Tom Brady, but a multiple champion QB, and its worth mentioning. Drafted 1st overall by, ironically, the Patriots in '71, he more or less underachieved with a bad Pats team for a few years before moving on to San Fran, and then eventually Oakland. In his 1st 2 years with the Raiders, he threw a total of 15 passes. Then, in his 3rd year, 5 games in injury forced him into action during the '80 season, and later that year at the age of 34 he won his 1st Superbowl. He was never mobile. He threw a great deep ball. And he won 2 rings on a largely veteran team, run, at that time, by a great owner and franchise. The QB in question is 31 years old. In short, let's not write off Tom Brady just quite yet.

Happy New Years, fellas. Always good to visit this rock solid football board.

Obviously Brady no longer needs the money. I'm sure he's made upwards of $50 million to this point. But when someone leaves you $40 million on a table for him, is he really gonna say "No its OK, i have enough". There's no reason Brady can't go into politics at 40 years old. A football career has a very limited life span to begin with, Brady would be foolish to cut that short and miss out on tens of millions of dollars.

He seems changed since Gisele showed up on the scene. He always used to be the offseason workout hero in Foxborough, but not last year. He bought a pricey piece of land in California during the offseason too. While I always assumed that he would consider politics in his post career life, I wonder if Gisele Bundchen-Brady would make a good political wife.

It would be great if he really is itching to get back on the field, etc., but I sort of wonder. And then there's this item from the Boston Globe:

Why waste time guessing if Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen are getting married when you can look into a crystal ball? Alex Palermo, owner of the Original Tremont Tearoom, the nation's oldest psychic salon, and Darlene at Regina Russell's Tea Room in Quincy, both say the Pats QB will, in fact, make a blushing bride of the Brazilian supermodel in the new year. Palermo: "Oh yeah, it's going to happen." Darlene: "It will never break up. It's forever. They are kindred old souls together." The soothsayers also say Brady's playing days are basically behind him because of the knee injury he suffered this season. "Even if he comes back, it'll be limited," said Palermo. "Tom's leaving football, and the Patriots are scrambling behind the scenes to figure out what to do."
