It seems most people are of the opinion that Dillon will be the main RB this season as Maroney learns the system and adjust to the NFL. My question is about the following year and what role he will have.

It seems so, 2007, that he'll be their main RB. However, he's gotta get his feet wet in regular season. Being impressive in minicamp is great but just one step. He's gotta do well in preseason and the regular season too before they switch to him.

It does seem that way now though IMO

That's my thinking as well...my only concern though is the blocking issues and the question of whether he can handle the load and goalline duties...any thoughts on that?

The NE Beat reporter was on Sirius radio a week or so ago and said that this will be Dillons last year with the Patriots. He also said that one of the biggest surprises of the OTA's is how good Maroney looks. He said concensus around camp is that Maroney will get significant playing time this year....if only to keep Dillon more healthy thru the season.

I don't think BB is so into limitted roles. He wants everyone to do everything and so turning a player into a goalline back would go against that. Even "3rd down back" Kevin Faulk has been the main RB at times. IMO Maroney will do some of everything. As for the blocking, good coaching and on the field direction usually speed that process along. The Pats won't leave Brady out there to get hurt so they'll surely address this is camp early and often. If Brady gets hit once, even in preseason, I'm sure he's all over Maroney both barking and advising him like the good leader he is. A missed block/Brady injury is too worrisome for the Pats, they'll take care of this.

maroney will add a dimension to NE that i can't remember them having for a long time (how many great RBs have pats had in past?)... he has big time open field speed... may be faster than deangelo when he gets up to full speed, and second fastest after bush among top 5 RBs in class of 2006 (addai is fast but i didn't see him break enough long ones... norwood extremely fast but not as clear if he can be feature RB & at any rate probably further away from getting that chance)... faster than when dillon was in his prime with CIN... that would be a desireable trait as it would keep defenses honest & might open up passing game for brady... if he can do the other stuff a well rounded RB needs to to... ie - block & catch (& early reports are encouraging), he is the real deal, imo... plus independent scout mike mayock (one of few that had maroney ahead of williams BEFORE draft) thinks he will eventually fill out & play at about 225 without sacrificing much speed, which would be within about 5 lbs of dillon...

IIRC from what I heard on Sirius Radio, Dillon was paid an acceleration bonus to make his contract up after this season.

That makes him a lame duck for this year, and Maroney the clear RB starter in 2007.

As an owner and a Pats fan, I think it could be during the 2006 season that we see Maroney take over. I watched every Pats game last year and it looked like Dillon was running in high heels. He actually looked worse than Antowan Smith last year. I'm not convinced that it was solely due to the calf injury either. I can envision a situation similar to the Bledsoe/Brady role shift, where Dillon gets banged up or looks like he's moving in slow motion and Maroney comes in and just looks better, sending Dillon to the bench. Would anyone really be surprised by this in 2006??? Well, anyone except the person who voted bust. Anyway, this is why I traded for him.

Unless of course Maroney doesn't show BB enough in 2006 to convince him to give Maroney the reigns. But yes, if I were to bet on it, I'd say LM is the lead back in 2007.

I can see Bellichick doing anything to win in 2006, including benching the worn out Dillon for Maroney..

I think 3 times in the history of the NFL has a RB at or over the age of 32 run for over 1,200 yards in a single season, Dillon is 32 in Oct.

thats some 400 rb's since the birth of the NFL , and only 3 guys ran for more than 1,200 yards? I'll take Maroney in a heartbeat!

rookie of the year candidate.

Dillon looks as slow as Eddie George did in Dallas...

I agree. Training camp is going to be big for Maroney to see how much confidence Belicheck has in him

These 2 posters nailed it IMO.

I could see Dillion fighting hard this camp and have one nice, last season with the Pats. HE knows he will be gone after this season and he's hearing all the hype about him being over the hill. Dillon is one of those guys that feeds off the motivation. Maroney will start in 07 for sure and will get a taste this year in relief of Dillon unless Dillon gets injured which is more than possible.

Also Dillon would probably like one more paycheck after this season and some shmuck team will sign him to a 3 year contract where he will only be servicable one of those years.
