Will Michael Strahan's bogus sacks record get broken? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
I sure hope so. The "record" is 22½.

Aldon Smith has 19½ with three games to go (including tonight at NE)

J.J. Watt has 19½ with two games to go.

I definitely think it's possible. Three games for Aldon smith should be at least 3 sacks. Brady and Wilson will be tough to get down though. But they have Arz last game. That should be 3 sacks alone.

The old-timers swear this record would belong to Deacon Jones if they recorded sacks back in the 60s.

And that the number would be somewhere around 30.

Didn't they film games back then? I would think a sack is a pretty obvious play.

I agree. I think the issue would be going back through every game film ever. You gotta be fair. It can't just be 1960-forward. If you go back to review Deacon's game films, you should do it for everyone.

You can find a number of claims for 22 to 26 sacks in the '60s and '70s, and "half sacks" probably weren't counted by anyone then. Doubt you could get to 30 even for Deacon Jones without some creative accounting, though.

Perhaps not. Keep in mind it was a 14-game season back then.

I agree. It was a sham. Total embarrassment. Not the 21....just the last one. Insane.

I hope Watts or Smith or both break it.

would be nice. he and favre should both be ashamed. favre for more than just this.
He breaks past the tackle and it's he n Favre right there. What did you think would have happened if Favre didn't lay down? geeshAnd I like the record just fine with dominant players leading it. These two aren't LT or Strahan caliber, more like Hugh Douglass who fell short his best year

It's an NFL record does it really matter except for the game or season it was broke?

It fun to talk about but those upset about Strahan should be over it by now.

Well it wasn't the tackle it was Bubba the TE I believe 1 on 1 with a Favre roll out that way.

Favre did that on his own, Bri. I forget exactly who it was, but one of his teammates who was in the huddle admitted after the game that the play Favre ran wasn't the play he called. He ran the exact opposite way from what was called, so that he would have no blocking. He hooked up his buddy Strahan. Nobody should dispute that.

I would think that there is more than a few nerds out there willing to plow through the archives.

The Favre sack was actually a running play. Favre made no attempt to throw the ball. He clearly was only interested in running for negative yardage. Elias ruled it a sack because they are jerks.

If watt breaks this record... Is this the finest season ever for a def player?
No way.Best of's generally have a top rated D as a result of their stellar play not a D allowing 20 points per game. There's an LT, Strahan, Ray Lewis.....season that they are similarly stout statistically and as a team too.
