Will New Orleans break the record for points scored in a season? (1 Viewer)

The 2007 Patriots scored 589.

Through seven games, the 2009 New Orleans Saints have scored 273. They are on pace to score 624. To get to 590, they need to score about 35 points a game in their final nine games. The rest of their schedule is:

Nov 8 Carolina 4:05pm

Nov 15 @St. Louis 1:00pm

Nov 22 @Tampa Bay 1:00pm

Nov 30 New England 8:30pm

Dec 6 @Washington 1:00pm

Dec 13 @Atlanta 1:00pm

Dec 19 Dallas 8:20pm

Dec 27 Tampa Bay 1:00pm

Jan 3 @Carolina 1:00pm

No cold weather games, except for maybe the one at Washington. But I give them an excellent shot to break the record. Even in games where they struggle a lot a times, like tonight, they still put 35 up on the board.

I'd have to think their defense gives them atleast another 70 points, Delhome x2, Bulger, and whoever is the QB in Tampa x2 will be very kind to them. I think it will really depend on whether or not the Saints go for the record, I could see them sitting their starters week 17. If they had BB as their headcoach, I would bet on them crushing the record, but I dont know what kinda guy Sean Payton is.

Thing is, their D is suspect, which means that their O will have to continue to put up big points to win shootouts. I think they have a legit shot...

Their D is far from suspect and they have 6TD's on defense this year. Coming into tonight here are the stats:PTS

21.2

(18th)

YDS

306.7

(11th)

PASS YDS

214.3

(16th)

RUSH YDS

92.3

They lost Sedrick Ellis last week and it showed tonight.

You havent watched this team much have you?And I agree with the comment that the team missed Sedrick Ellis tonight, his absence was noticeable....especially to Michael Turner

And last week, when Brown & Williams gashed them for 150 yards and 4TDs in another shootout. And in week 3 when Kolb passed for 391 yards in his first NFL start.I'm not saying that it's the worst D in the NFL or something, but IMO it's suspect. This is their most impressive win of the season. Besides this, we have Detroit, Kevin Kolb's first NFL start, Buffalo, a .500 Jets team, a clearly overrated Giants team and a shootout vs. the Dolphins. They can only play the teams on their schedule (and what a schedule it is), but I remain unconvinced that this is the Superbowl-bound team that people are claiming it is.

what is really scary is that they can probably afford to have him out for the full 6 weeks if not more as long as he is ready to go for the playoffs.

I see what your saying but this D is definitely better than what your assuming. Their middle of the pack in the stat category and have stepped up every instance they have needed to. It also helps when they have 6td's on defense alone and that has to count for something.m

Yea that schedule looks like pretty good to me. Washington and maybe Dallas could put up some resistant on the defensive side of the ball but the other defenses will get dismantled.

Carolina has been playing a little D lately, and has the backs to rip the Saints run D. That game will be a watch....

I think they have a great chance. Even in games like this one, or last weeks versus the Dolphins where their offense gets shut down for a half, they still seem to wind up with a high point total. Like an earlier poster said, it'll likely come down to whether they are actively trying to break it ala the Patriots of '07 because I think they definitely will have a chance.

I started this thread back during the preseason....(pats himself on the back)

Maybe you could of just revised the other 10 threads about this!

The Carolina D hasn't really been their problem most of this year, and Carolina usually plays well in New Orleans. If their offense sticks to their running game (big If with their play calling), and doesn't commit turnovers (Jake), they can control the clock, and give the Saints a game.

At 407 now, with five games to play. The record is 589. They need 183 points in their last five games to do it; that is 36.6 points a game. And they have zero cold weather games left, not to mention three dome games (two at home and one at Atlanta).

At some point the unbeaten record may play against this though because they will have home field in playoffs locked up and then will they sit Brees and company for the last game or two?

I would say no whenyou look at it as needing 36.6/game. They are going to have a game or two where they hit the 24-28 range. This will require a couple 40 plus games. Don't see it happening unless Payton goes all BB on us and runs up the score during a blow out two. The genius in the hoodie had no problem putting sportsmanship on the back burner enroute to the record books.
