Will Sean Payton let Brees throw the ball 50+ times (1 Viewer)

What do you think? Carolina has nothing to play for.......and the game is in New Orleans. I'm guessing the second half becomes a passing fest in order for Brees to snag the record. :goodposting:

I don't see why Payton wouldn't let him air it out as much as possible - there is nothing left for the team to play for. In fact, yesterday when the Saints were already blowing out the Lions, Brees probably was allowed to chuck the ball more than he normally would have.

Carolina is playing to win their division. Nobody has won the NFC South yet, and it's a race between the Panthers and Atlanta this weekend to see who wins the division, and who gets the wildcard.

It was pretty obvious yesterday that they're gonna do whatever it takes to try and get that record.

I do think Carolina would still like to win their division though rather then let Atlanta win it.

My bad. No way he gets 402 with Carolina trying to win the division.

It's actually pretty obvious that they didn't do whatever it takes to try and get that record. They had the ball for about half of the fourth quarter. They ran it 7 times, threw 4, and 3 kneels. All 4 passes were in passing situations.New Orleans Saints continues ...2-10-NO 45 (15:00) 23-P.Thomas up the middle to DET 48 for 7 yards (50-E.Sims; 27-D.Bullocks).3-3-DET 48 (14:22) 9-D.Brees pass short left to 83-B.Miller to DET 43 for 5 yards (53-P.Lenon; 57-J.Dizon).1-10-DET 43 (13:46) 9-D.Brees pass short right to 16-L.Moore pushed ob at DET 35 for 8 yards (28-L.Bodden).2-2-DET 35 (13:22) 23-P.Thomas right tackle to DET 24 for 11 yards (92-C.Avril). True, but unlike most other games, the Saints essentially had this game in hand at half time, and they still threw the ball as much as they have all year. That indicates that the playcalling throughout much of the second half may have been designed with the record in mind.

I don't think they will overtly try to do it. The situation will dictate approach. For example, if they're up two scores with six minutes left, it wouldn't be proper to go for the record at the risk of losing the game since it affects playoff berths for other teams.

That said, I expect the Saints to be playing from behind most of the game, so the game situation will dictate Brees airing it out quite a bit. Don't know about 402 yards though.

I was wondering about this. Poor FOX, the best game they could have switch to at noon was Ram-49ers. The others were blowouts. Not that the networks would actually switch to a competitive game. At least I got to see Fitz score his double point TD for my win.

I think they were trying to get Brees as many yds possible yesterday, but towards the end eased off because they were just so far ahead it would look classless.. Brees was completing at will though and easily could have gone 400+yds to make the record more attainable.. To their credit they did ease up a little..

Proper? Is it proper when teams who have already clinched their division / seed don't play their starters the full game? Especially against teams needing a win? I agree with your 2nd comment, Brees will be throwing a lot regardless of whether they are trying to get the record.

i like drew a lot but it seems like the more he throws, the more likely they are to lose a game...

No - it's completely lame. Obviously I understand why they do it, but it's still lame. Dungy should have made the Titans earn their playoff spot last year instead of having Jim Sorgi hand it to them on a silver platter (and no I'm not a Browns fan). And I'm glad they lost their first playoff game too. Karma's a ##### sometimes.Maybe teams won't do it as much after seeing the Giants' example of playing all the way through.
