Wow, I was just about to say that he wasn't even close, than I looked up the careers of a number of existing HOF catchers. It seems like he's got a very legitimate chance. However, since he's only really been catching fulltime for 7-8 years now, and he's already 35, it might be tough to put together the stats. 5 All-Star appearances in essentially 7-8 years as the full time starter is nice. 4 Silver Sluggers helps too. Not to mention the WS glory.

I really don't know. It depends largely on how much longer he can go. If he plays anywhere near the level he is at now for another five years, he's pretty much a slam dunk. If three years from now, he starts consistently having seasons like 2005, he'll likely miss out.

Him slapping his hands together after doubling off of Pedro in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS is the enduring image in my mind of Posada...

...but he pees on his hands.

HONDA

And I still say no unless he plays for many more years. He'll be 36 in 2 weeks.
Look at Fisk and Carter's stats, and it just seems like Posada isn't so many years away from being on that level. That being said, Pudge Rodriguez puts Posada's stats to shame. When all is said and done, Piazza and Posada should retire with similar career contributions.

Whoa! Slow down! Piazza is the best offensive catcher of all time. Jorge is the third best catcher of his generation, but I think he's short of the HOF at this point. Another 2 years like this though, and he's really a contender. A WS MVP would help

Is this thread a joke? Isnt Posada widely regarded as a below average defensive catcher? He is not a HOF.

Jim Rice might get in this year but til now he cant sniff the HOF but you are going to back Posada's candidacy?

Not a joke, but apparantly a Honda (my bad).My friend contends that Jorge will deserve it. I contend not. He will have had a very good career, but never have I watched him and said "Im watching a HoFer" - ever.He is the third best catcher of his generation however, unless I am missing someone other than Piazza and I-Rod. But scarcity at position is not enough for me to bump him into the hall. The subpar D hurts as well.

Fisk2356 hits, 376 HR, 1330 RBI, HOF Monitor Score 120.5

Carter

2092 hits, 324 HR, 1225 RBI, HOF Monitor Score 135

Posada

1283 hits, 212 HR, 834 RBI, HOF Monitor Score 75.5

And Posada played in an era with mega offensive numbers while Fisk and Carter played in an era where offensive production was repressed.

I'm not sure where to draw the line for other candidates. Victor Martinez could someday be a candidate. Other guys to at least throw into a conversation could include Javy Lopez, Bento Santiago, Jason Kendall, Craig Biggio (at least for a few years), and even Tony Pena (for longevity).

His career numbers might compare favorably to other HOF catchers when he's done, but he's a long way from that atm. Besides, playing in the era he played in, his career numbers really should be demonstrably better than those catchers, and they wont be.

I guess by some sabermetric measures, Posada will retire having been as valuable as others, but in terms of accolades and "grey" ink, he just doesn't have it. And his defense isn't superb.
