The Cubs are currently 2.5 games back. They have already missed Ramirez for 13 or so games and have gotten way below normal production from 1B, RF, and C. Other than possibly Kosuke, no one is performing above talent level. The starting pitching is showing no signs that they won't be one of the top staffs in the NL all year. The bullpen is a bit of a mess but most of the problem is in the 6th and 7th innings and there is enough arms that I suspect those holes will be filled.

They will win the division.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but from an unbiased perspective I think the Reds are going to win the division.

I am leaning towards no at this point as well. Pre-season, I would've easily taken the Cubs, but Derek Lee doesn't look like nearly the same player, Aramis Ramirez is injured, and the rest of the division looks way better than expected.

Like others have said in this thread or elsewhere, the Reds look more like this year's Tampa Bay every day and the Cardinals still have the best player in the league. Oh BTW, the Brewers have the best offense in the division and Gallardo is for real. Too much strength in "the field" to take the Cubs here.

Starting pitchers should (betterDamnWell) come around......The bullpen is a liability OVERRATED, besides Angel Guzman they don't challenge people....Bob Howry wasn't fooling anyone last year, but at least he didn't walk people. Bradley is slowwwwwwly starting to come alive. I'm somewhat concerned about Soto, but he's being selective enough at the plate to show me he has the patience to work out of it. The x-factor is ####udome....If he doesn't tail off like he did last year with a healthy Ramirez, Lee, then look out.

Will the Cubs win the central?.......Cubs get Peavy and win because of it

Virutually every Cubs starter (save Ram, whose out) is hitting under their career BA and slugging - and they're still hanging around just off the Cards heels. The fact is, with the Cubs huge payroll, they are simply deeper in virtually every aspect than any other team in the Central. Right now they have Ram and Zambrano out and Lee, Bradley and Soto all hitting under .200 As an example, if Pujols suddenly went down, Ludwig went into a slump and Wainwright went on the DL - how would the Cardinals do? Or Braun and Fielder for the Brewers? Or Bruce, Phillips and Harang for the Reds?

My point is part of the reason the Cubs were picked to win the division at the begginning of the year is their depth. They need help from their depth now - and they're getting it. When the big name players on the Cubs get healthy (or come our of their respective slumps) - the Cubs should have little trouble taking over the division.

Mark him down for a 15 game slump

I think its pretty clear. 3 to 1 the cubs don't win the division. All you cubs fans can just give up now.

Indeed. Ludwig is hitting .219 in May - an the Cards are 5-7 in that span. Their multi-game lead over the division has already evaporated and they just dropped 2 of 3 to those powerhouse Pirates. Meanwhile the Cubs are 10-3 in May, and that's with a rookie starter filling on for Zambrano and Lee and Ram sitting out and the afore mentioned Lee, Soto and Bradley still all hitting under .200

That, and I was pointing out Ludwig just hit the 15 day DL

Well, yeah, that too. :lmao:

Even if the Chokers manage to get the wildcard, we all know what is going to happen to them in the playoffs.

The Brewers are not only going to win the division, but they will make the World Series this year. Not sure if they will win the World Series this year or next though.

Brew Crew will finish 10+ games out.

 The Crew has a chance if Gallardo pitches every game

Lotsa myopic Cubs fans around here. While I can't agree with GreenNGold's own myopia enthusiasm, to count the Brewers out is crazy talk. The Cubs are obviously still the favorite but recently health has not been on their side. They need to get everyone back quickly and remain healthy. It's May. There's A LOT of baseball to be played. I wouldn't be surprised to see any of the Cubs, Brewers or Cardinals take it, with the Reds having an outside shot if everything falls right.

Health is the key for all 4 teams. Should be fun either way
