Will the Dolphins trade for Kmet or Andrews or Mayer? (1 Viewer)

I kinda think they are fine at TE if they want the position to be more about blocking than receiving. Pharoh Brown isn't awful. I'm really of the belief that Jonnu Smith isn't a big loss at all. Fantasy value>>>>>NFL value, his targets will be much more valuable going to Achane, Hill, and Waddle.

I think the Ravens would be extremely unlikely to deal Andrews, who is still a top-5 NFL TE in my opinion, even if he may not be in fantasy. Kmet or Mayer, I mean those guys are probably better all-around players than Jonnu was, but why would either team give them up for anything less than a 3rd round pick?

I think if Miami adds a TE, its more likely to be off the FA scrap heap. Names like Gerald Everett, Marcedes Lewis (6th OL), or Jordan Akins feel more in line.

ETA: I don't think TE is a huge part of Mike McDaniel's offense. Before Jonnu's 111 targets last year, the previous 2 guys had 52 (Gesicki, who they let go because of blocking issues) and 43 (Smythe) Jaylen Waddle had 83 targets last year, I think they want that number to be closer to 130. Tyreek had 123, I think they want that number to be closer to 160.

They already have a scrap heap for the position. I’m guessing you are wrong.

Raiders have said they aren’t dealing Mayer.

Kmet would be awesome.
People have a change of heart all the time. Or they were never serious to begin with.
They’ve been pretty consistent with their comments about Mayer all offseason though. Including their beat writer saying this today:
Raiders beat writer Vincent Bonsignore says they “have no interest in trading Michael Mayer.”
It was reported earlier that the Dolphins had interest in acquiring Mayer after trading Jonnu Smith to the Steelers. Bonsignore is a well-connected beat writer who noted earlier in the day that the team has “big plans” for Mayer in 2025. While we wouldn’t completely rule out a deal for Mayer getting done, it sounds like the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere if they hope to upgrade at tight end.

Oh so much Chig here.
They were one of the rumored teams in like January or somesuch.
He has faster speed than whatever his 40 time was and he probably meets whatever criteria McDaniel wants.
Google has four results already including Chig trade to Fins.

The Titans will mess this up, but for now it's win win

Jonnu's best trait for this offense was his YAC ability.

Fant, Pitts and Mayer in that order would be ideal trade candidate replacements.

But the issue with Fant and Pitts is they'd inherit up $8.5-9m for Fant and close to $11M for Pitts and if they wanted to pay that to a TE seems like they'd have just kept Jonnu.

Mayer makes more sense, a lot more, from a multiyear and financial angle but of course we have reports the Raiders are not willing to trade him. Are those reports legit? I don't know, having a hard time buying "they got big plans for him" and I think they have to be a delicate with how they handle his name coming up in trade talks because that can get into a players mentals and this is a guy who had to leave the team last year for reasons unknown but seemed to be about some mental issues he was dealing with.

Gerald Everett seems like a name to keep an eye if they want to sign someone who can do some of the YAC things Jonnu did and should be cheap. League minimum type deal.

I'll just say I don't think Jonnu is or was anything special. This offense and the way he was use was why he broke out in year 8. Defenses trying to keep Tyreek and Waddle from beating them deep and Tua getting the ball out quickly. Just need someone else to play that role, which again the most important trait to possess to play that role is YAC ability. If they end up doing nothing meaningful then Julian Hill will become a significant player of interest.

The biggest question: Will ‘Muth truthers finally throw in the towel?

(I vividly recall offering a future 1st in one TEP league a couple years back and being told to “pound sand” at that price)

I mean, I think its still entirely possible Muth is the TE to own in Pittsburgh. As much as Arthur Smith "loves" Jonnu, he was a lot less productive with Smith than he was with McDaniel.

My personal opinion is Jonnu is not an upgrade for the Steelers, and fantasy wise, this trade will end up being all about Achane/Waddle.

The Dolphins are tanking.
How? They traded 2 old guys they didn't wanna pay big money for, and got arguably the best player the deal, who is also the youngest. That's a rare win for Grier in my eyes.

Definitely possible.

Personally I believe this hurts them both. A lot. It’s going to be a low volume passing attack, and ARod could actually be washed.

Given all the variables I’m super not at all happy about this development for Jonnu. And I’ve been the most Pollyanna about the dude of just about anyone on these forums for years.

Even if ARod looks great, there just aren’t going to be enough passing yards or TDs to go around for either of them to be a FF TE1. Maybe not even a middling TE2, so far as predictability/consistency goes. I won’t touch either in redraft, and I’m even a little sketchy about them in BB, the only format I’d consider rostering them (outside of my 2 dynasty shares of Jonnu, one not in a TEP).

Never said he was.

The Miami Dolphins are not trading for a Tight End
FF fans fail to realize the damage to the Miami offense of having Smith lead the team in receptions and yards when you have Tyreek Hill and Waddle as your WR1 and WR2
The POV that is being projected by most posters since this trade is focused on their desire to insert a Tight End on to their fantasy football roster, and good for you
But the Miami Dolphins are not run like your Dynasty team...Redrafters could care less where Smith ends up and are not going to try and over hype him, fine he's a Steeler now, big deal

Hill-Waddle-Achane are the primary weapons in Miami, PERIOD!
Grier has been the GM now for a decade and has zero playoff victories and seems to be in no danger of losing his job since the 85 yr old owner gets to do what he wants
The owner was suspended for Half a Season and the GM just continues to plug along with no real benchmarks he needs to meet.

Plus Miami has rebuilt their IOL, that should be your focus and not where a 30-yr old veteran TE signed as a free agent produces a career year...you see where I'm going here
WAKE UP!

Who was the Miami Tight End in 2023 when they were whooping *** to start the season and went 11-6 and landed in the Freezer Bowl vs KC?
Durham Smythe, so don't tell the Miami fan base what the impact of Jonnu Smith was, 88/888/8TDs, good for Jonnu but bad for Miami as the results were a 9-8 season
It's not personal, I didn't directly rebuke any single individual so don't make this personal, it's business!

BOOM!

Reports are that Miami is reaching out to multiple teams to trade for a TE

The Dolphins are on the hunt for a new tight end.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Miami is engaged with multiple teams about acquiring a player at the position after agreeing to trade Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh on Monday.

At this point, it’s unclear who Miami could be talking to about a deal. But by getting the information out there, the Dolphins are certainly looking to upgrade the position before training camp starts in July.

Minka has played even above average since 2023. The Dolphins have decent safeties, but no corners.

How does Tom Pelissero know any of this? The local beat writers in Miami haven't been trumpeting this to my knowledge

"Unclear who Miami is talking to"
-MoP could have written this snippet, let me get some unnamed sources
Who wants to be an unnamed source in here, just hit up my PM and I'll start doing daily news flashes

The media for 2 months had Ramsey linked to every other team in the NFL and that always proved to be clickbait
Miami has enough offense, they need Defense/DBs and will use whatever money they have left to try and bring in at least 1 if not 2 veterans at Corner that have not been signed
That should be where the media is focused, not trying to do the usual plug the hole reports they don't know anything about because they don't have an office at Hard Rock last i checked

@Birdie048 , thank you for posting this, I was not rebuking you at all, just smashing Tommy P on this empty report
Always enjoy your contributions around here
Cheers!

I could see Andrews if the Ravens think that Likely is their guy of the future

I agree in principle, but the Ravens are in the Super Bowl window and being able to run out two good tight ends create so many mismatches and things is too valuable.

If Lamar got hurt before the season I could see it.

And the Winner is DARREN WALLER previously of NYG ...coming out of Retirement to go to Miami.
Now that's out of the blue.

Interesting and I'm interested.

Just read his position coach the two huge years of his career, Frank Smith, is the Dolphins OC.

All about his health IMO, year off might have done him some good.

Does anyone really believe he could be relevant? Will be 33 in September. In shape? Not a broken body? Come on.

Honestly, given the price, I think Waller is better than most of the options that were listed. I'd rather deal essentially a conditional pick swap for Waller than actual picks for Mayer, or Fant, or even Pitts. Waller taking a year off to get healthy should be better than any of those guys. Even in 2023 he was averaging 50 yards per game in a garbage offense. In an offense with a much better QB, infinitely better WRs, I think Waller could be a solid mismatch (particularly up the seam) on 3rd downs..

I think Waller>Jonnu, given the money. I like this move a lot. He was basically free.

Yes, me.

I mean raise your hand if you predicted Jonnu was going to have an 8th year breakout after signing a relatively paltry deal with the Dolphins last year.

I could pick up Waller for free as I'm typing this, one is even TEP, but I'm not exactly rushing to do so.

I think @Ministry of Pain was saying the entire way through this event that the Dolphins dont value the TE or feel they have a need there.

They were never going to give up Day 2 draft capital to fix a hole they dont feel they have. I doubt Waller will be the guy he was earlier in his career and I dont know that the Dolphins expect that; after investing a 7th or 6th rounder.

Fantasy sports amusement factor is a TEN+ for me. Waddle and Hill were a top 5 duo two years ago and now the Dolphins are a dumpster fire because they let a 30+ y/o TE go in a package to offload Jalen Ramsey, who was clearly getting worse for Minkah Fitzpatrick. Dolphins win that trade but are tanking... well, they just traded for another 30 year old TE - everything is back to status quo.

I picked him up for free. I can keep a roster clogger or search for immediate contribution on my team with Jonnu "8th year breakout" Smith upside?

I am down. Again, the cost was nothing.

He will be 33 in September, been hurt, and out of football for awhile. Jonnu Smith is 29 coming off a big year. Not sure how anyone could say Waller >Smith, even given the money.

Not a big deal but this seems like a disingenuous way of presenting this in light of the fact Jonnu will turn 30 before Waller turns 33.
Not disingenuous at all. Or not intened to be. Facts are facts. Waller was a broken player when he did play and is old and been out of football for awhile. I'm just saying, I don't know how anyone could have a warm and fuzzy about Waller. I could be wrong, but I passed on the opportunity to pick him up. Someone already did so in one TEP, so good for him. I'll let the competition clog their roster.

and I swear I saw a clip of Waller on a podcast where he said he retired because the coach asked him to play full back on some packages. So he might not exactly be totally locked in to football and being a team player.

Broken body and age aside, my feeling was back then his heart wasn't into football.

I have a hard time seeing Waller return to fantasy relevance. Soon to be 33 and coming out of retirement. He struggled with staying healthy before retiring.

The best version of Miami gets the ball to Hill, Waddle, and Achane. If you wanted a TE that you were going to make a big part of the offense...well...you had Jonnu Smith.

Free is free, right?

I am in a win now team and just dropped a TE behind Hock and Pitts for Waller. Literally, free. I am in win now and this is a dart throw.

I agree. Could be nothing... but it could be a boat.

Either way, immediate impact of Waller has greater upside and team fit for me than my TE3 as I am B2B Champ and contending.

Was not on my bingo card today...

Was lol'ing at all the waiver notification emails I suddenly received from my dynasty leagues as people rush to pick him up....

(Were Gronk and Eifert too busy to come out of retirement?) I am not sure Waller will even make the final roster. I hope he does revive his career, but it seems unlikely that he will have much fantasy value at this stage.
