Windows 10, anyone upgrading? (1 Viewer)

I just got a notification of my free upgrade to Windows 10 from microsoft when available. Currently running windows 7 so my question is Windows 10 worth the upgrade and what's new about it. I heard it's also subscription based and will have to renew each year, days of out right buy out?

I take it if I upgrade it will wipe my computer since it's a new operating system? Any thoughts on Windows 10.

Got the same thing. Subscribed to the upgrade, figured I have 2 months to figure out if I want to opt out on the install.

I'm in!

I've been playing with the Technical Preview since last October and I really, really like it. It's everything Windows 8 SHOULD have been and more. Currently have all of my PCs on Windows 7 and will upgrade them all.

I wouldnt be in a rush. Its Microsoft. Wait at least until the first service pack is released.

Good to hear. I'm in day 1. Plus it's supposed to tie in with the Xbox One nicely which may be cool.

Just investigated to get that irritating new icon out of my tray, and discovered that (a) it's free and (b) I can install it when I want, so I can look up the pros and cons and ramifications later. (For example, I don't want any kind of wipe of my system.)

waiting as i'm not a fan of jumping on the first public (or is this still beta?) release of an OS. Also, to the OP, I believe the new MS biz model is to go free upgrades on the OS and seek monetization elsewhere.

Will it wipe everything what I currently have on my computer with windows 7?
I haven't done an in place upgrade with the Technical Preview - just a fresh install. I think it's safe to say that there is an option to do an in place upgrade of your current OS leaving everything intact - just like all previous versions. It's probably the default install anyways.

I've been playing with 8.1 on my Surface 3. It's just another OS that a person has to get used to. Not sure what 10 will do other than cosmetic for starters. But, if they say it's better, I hope it is.

Other than being forced onto to it at some point - anyone know how it is better than windows 7? Hell for xp for that matter.
I don't know anyone who messed with the beta, but I've read that it's the Windows 7 to Windows 8/8.1. Without looking at the claims about its performance or features, it will have the much improved boot times of Windows 8 and 8.1, which was designed to have extremely fast boots over SSD.

I just got into 8.1 and after raising enough hell learned that everyone who did is eligible for a free upgrade to 10 when it comes in. When I asked the techs they said that the primary difference is that 10 will bring back the Start button and menu. Is this right? I am not techie and actually got upgraded straight from Vista.

The other thing they said is that 8 was designed to be used with touch screen ala iphones. That really sounds off to me even if it works--the ergonomics would suck.

Cons: Loss of some common software (WMP, Hearts card game, DVD playing app, desktop gadgets)

Updates will be automatic, not optional

Pros: Start Menu returns

new task view

snap assist to help place windows where they can be viewed best

"Home" and "Share" added to Windows Explorer

special software that detects if a keyboard is present on a hybrid device and helps select best input

new apps store

new tool bar

very lightweight

No, in fact that's one of their benefit bullet points. You won't need to reinstall anything or lose any data.

Nice breakdown. I'd argue that true automatic updates is a big pro for windows 10. This will help many folks who either neglect their updates, are afraid of updating, or just have no clue what the updates are in keeping their computer secure, relative to those that have 200 security patches they haven't applied.

Sadly, I think i have a PC still on vista and a laptop on XP (I think). When you are done laughing, since 10 is free to those on 7 or 8.1, do I need to upgrade before moving to 10 or will there be a pay option for 10 for any not on 7 or 8.1?

we dont use the PC very much now that we have iPhones and an iPad but would be nice to have them updated to the latest (Might use the PC more if it wasnt on vista!)

ok found this article, http://www.neowin.net/news/upgrading-to-windows-10-from-xp-or-vista-prepare-for-a-clean-install

I am guessing a clean install means I lose everything saved (Pictures, docs, etc?) unless backed up to an outside source correct?

Cons: Loss of some common software (WMP, Hearts card game, DVD playing app, desktop gadgets)
Those two alone mean I won't be upgrading.
I can see why you'd say that but IMO both those native Windows apps suck.

I think you're better off using something like VLC player or just about anything else (esp for WMP).
WMP integrates perfectly with my network TV tuner on my HTPC. I can also view TV channels on my laptop with it. It took me a while to get my HTPC working the way I like it (and the way I understand how to use it), and I don't want to go messing with it.

Not planning to upgrade from 7 to 10 right away but if the reviews are good, I might wipe the system and reinstall fresh probably with a shiny new SSD for my games drive.

Reluctant to move away from 7 but I'll look into it more. Depends how much of the tile interface I have to deal with. My computer at home is a desktop, so I want the classic desktop type of interface. If I can avoid ever seeing tiles then I'll definitely do it.

I hate the Office 2013 minimal look. Has taken me months to get used to and it still bugs me. Bascially I hate the MSFT design language post 2010.

I'll be upgrading. Might be due for a fresh wipe, although I hate setting up my computer from scratch.

For those wondering - technically (ignoring the UI) Windows 8/8.1 was a nice upgrade from Windows 7. It booted faster, better performance and overall uses less system resources. If you are a gamer, there are plenty of benchmarks showing that Win8 outperforms Windows 7. So if Windows 10 continues or improves the performance and also fixes the UI issues that Windows 8 has, then it'll be a very nice upgrade.

Better off buying a new PC ( or Mac) if you are running hardware that shipped with XP or Vista. You're on borrowed time with a system that old, plus the performance jump from almost any new computer is going to be huge.

Why are they offering free upgrade anyways? Microsoft must have some hook where they plan on getting us on.

I assume Windows 10 won't include WMC out of the box (like Win8). Does anyone know if it will be available/supported/functional, or do those of us to built HTPCs run Win7 until it breaks?

I have a lot of computers between home and office, and know that we have until July 29 to reserve our free copy of Windows 10 to upgrade from either 7 or 8. Is there any reason to not do it? I have done much research either way, but figure there will be a few FBG's on top of this.

A co-worker of mine has been on the beta for 6+ months now. She really likes 10 and said that Microsoft has done great work with this OS. She's been using 10 for both work and home.

I probably won't upgrade the work laptop right away but will be updating my desktop on it's release.

I can see the rationale that they want everyone on one OS so that support is limited, but I really like Win7. Fantastic OS. I am not a huge fan of 8.

My tech guy always tells me to wait for the second release of any software so they can fix the bugs.
