Winter repair stuff, leaks and more (1 Viewer)

Hey all, Northeast Ohio here dealing with 4 feet of heavy snow and all the issues it causes. Nothing worse than the plows clearing the streets and putting 2 feet of super heavy slush at the end of your driveway.

Anyway, got an issue that maybe someone knows how to help with.

My bay window is leaking inside the house. Guessing the problem has to do with frozen gutters and a lot of snow on the roof that is thawing underneath and the water has nowhere to go.
I've used a roof rake and got all the snow off that area. That worked for a couple days, but it's leaking even more.

Only thing I can think to do right now is toss some salt up there and hope it melts some stuff enough to let water drip outside somewhere, or will that ruin the gutter/roof?

The roof hangs over the bay window, so perhaps the water is leaking behind the gutter and has nowhere else to go.....

Doesn't appear there is any noticeable water dripping outside. Guess it's probably working it's way in under the roof shingles and then finding a tiny spot to leake in above the bay window.
This sucks

Yeah, that is probably what is going on. Not much you can do until all that snow on the roof melts off.

On the bright side it sounds like you have good insulation in your attic!

Sorry you are going through that. This is our first winter in northern Wisconsin so I know I'll have some stuff to learn and figure out. Right now my bugaboo is condensation on the inside of my windows. We aren't even running our humidifier yet. And the windows are double pane vinyl windows. @SWC - what you got to solve this problem snowmigo.....

How old's your roof? We had snow melt leakage issues for about 4 years before we just replaced the whole thing. Should've done it much sooner. I found it really hard to identify where the water was entering the roof, and then running down until it finds/makes a place to keep seeping down - it doesn't always come from directly above the leak into the interior. I also got to the point where I was just removing the source (i.e. shoveling the entire roof) to eliminate the leak.

If you're gonna clear the roof, consider getting one of these

My roof and gutters are brand new (bout a year old).
I did get gutter guards this time, wondering if that makes the ice dams form easier

Definitely gotta be ice dam at the edge of the gutters. After I scraped a bunch of snow and ice off the leaking became much less........for an hour.
Now it's back to where it was as before then.
Kinda sucks sitting here watching water leak into a cooler I have sitting there

I thought that was a sign of bad insulation; like when you're attic is too warm b/c house heat is getting up there causing the snow over that section to melt quickly and refreeze at the colder eaves?

You are correct. The ice dams form cause the attic gets warm due to not great insulation (which I'm guessing I don't have great attic insulation).

On a side note after watching some YouTube videos, I've seen socks filled with salt to melt ice mounds, and also spraying windshield washer fluid up there to break up current ice dams.

I'll try anything, lol

Damn, that stinks. Can you see the ice dams? I'd clear off all the snow in that area first and then see if there is an ice dam there. If there is, I'd use boiling water to at least make a channel where the water can go down into the gutter. You might also have to melt out the gutter if there is an ice blockage there. As a more long term fix, you might consider heat tape, and only turning it on when conditions are right (after snow, thaw then freeze) because it's expensive. You could also add insulation but that didn't work for us. Sorry.

The mice are just flowing in to my 90-year old home with the cold weather. The dog just spills her kibble all over the place.

Don't have the heart for glue traps. To be honest, I haven't had the heart for snap traps either, but I finally decided it's either that or go get a cat. Previous attempts at a live trap didn't work out so well. Two have bitten the dust so far. Not sure how many I'm going to have to take out before we can resume an uneasy peace.

Did you try this yet? https://www.amazon.com/Bucket-Indoor-Outdoor-Humane-Compatible/dp/B0DNSR97HT. Have had a lot of success with it.

Thanks for your review. I made a homemade version of this when I had indisputable evidence they had reached my counter top a number of years back :( It did work, but the constant monitoring, release, asylum paperwork definitely wore thin.

Just curious if you drown / poison within the bucket or take the time to live release? Watching those Fievel movies as a kid really did a number on me, so I was live releasing, but it was definitely a chore that soon wore thin. Supposedly, you have to take them miles away from your residence, but maybe that's complete hogwash.

I live release. I put it in my attic and it is a little annoying having to monitor. I do a morning hike down the road with my dog daily so the bucket just comes with me if we get one.

Had the same issue first winter I moved into my house. Not a help for you now, but anytime we get enough snow that fills and covers the gutters, I roof rake a foot above the gutter and down to prevent damming. No issue since. It’s an inconvenience, but worth it.

I had never even thought about the roof rake till this happened.
I was talking to my dad earlier in the day where he was telling me he used to go out on the roof and shovel the snow off. A few hours later....leaking. I guess old people just know things.
