Witnessed Grand Slam, No-No, Perfect Game? (1 Viewer)

I've never witnessed any and think it would be awesome. Tell me how sweet it was.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. Foul ball or home run ball stories as well. (I've never been lucky enough in that dept either.)

Mike Scott's no-hitter against the Giants in 1986 when the Astros clinched the NL West. My dad had 2 seats for us to go to the game....except I pulled a C on my progress report and he left me home and took the neighbor. :(

Was at Nolan Ryan's last win.

Was at Jacob's Field when McGwire hit the scoreboard with a home run(only player to date to do it).

Saw many walk off home runs and grand slams, the most memorable being a walk off grand slam by Omar Vizquel.

Best memory I have is the 1982 ALCS when Cecil Cooper hit the series winning hit in game 5, a two-run single that put the Brewers ahead 4-3. The Milwaukee bullpen kept the Angels off the board in the final two innings, and the Brewers took home the franchise’s first American League pennant. I was there and I still have never heard a louder roar in my life when that ball dropped in for a basehit. We went onto the field after the game and then everyone went to Wisconsin Avenue downtown. :banned:

One 22 bouncer away from seeing Pedro Martinez no-hit the Reds at Riverfront while he was with Montreal. Bret Boone hits around .200 all year but that one finds its way up the middle.

One handed a foul ball the same game in the second deck behind home plate. Future wife was  . Never rolled her eyes when I said nobody over 12 should bring a glove to the game ever again.

Monroe's grand slam against the White Sox last July was a pretty neat experience. Most fan excitement I've ever seen at a baseball game. Everyone literally jumping around in the stands and high fiving everyone in sight. Saw Lou Whitaker put one on the roof at Tiger Stadium. Also got a ball in the bleachers at Wrigley 2 years ago. It was only BP, but shhhhhh, don't tell anyone ;)

I saw Jim Thome hit the longest official home run at Jacob's Field in Cleveland. It was a night game of a double-header and the wife and I had great seats a couple rows back on the third base side. Thome got ahold of that thing and it just kept going, and going , and going. 511 feet later it hit the fence on Eagle ave. It was a massive blast!

Prior to that home run, the longest one there was when McGwire hit the scoreboard with a home run to left field. I saw that one on TV though, not in person.

I was at Tiger Stadium for a double header against the Brewers in 1985 for my birthday. Darrell Evans hit a game winning grand slam in the bottom of the 7th with 2 out in the first game. I also remember seeing on the scoreboard that Tom Seaver won his 300th game that day and Rod Carew got his 3,000th hit on the same day.

saw the no-no the Astro's pulled on the Yankees a couple of years ago with three pitchers...no one in the stadium even knew it was happening until the 9th.

Snaked a foulball that came screaming back over the screen - inches in front of my date and future SO's ( and soon to be wife) face!

Only foul ball I have ever gotten!

I was watching a game one day when all of a sudden Randy Velarde made an unassisted triple play (think it was vs the Yanks or Twins). I was with my SO and I was just speechless. I tried to explain the significance of the moment but it was lost. It's happened a handful of times in major league history and I just saw it by accident live. Pretty cool.

Joey Belle hitting a granny off Eric Plunk in the old Cleveland Memorial Stadium. It was in the early 90s I think.

June 17th, 1978 at Yankee stadium. In the 2nd game of a doubleheader Ron Guidry struck out 18 Angels.

He finished that year 25-3 with 248 K's and an ERA of 1.74

After digging up some stats it was a 6-2 Cubbies loss to the D-backs on August 17th 2002.

Erubiel Durazo hit a grand slam in the top of the 9th a 2-2 game. Hit it off Kyle Farnsworth.

Sosa also hit one in the street in the 1st inning. His 43rd of the year. He finished the season with 49.

Kerry Wood vs. Miguel Battisa was the pitching matchup.

Living in Buffalo, Not many chances to expierence MLB games. I do catch alot of Buffalo Bisons games.

I go to Cleveland and Toronto a few times a summer but have not seen anything special.

Going August 11th to Yankees @ Cleveland.

The distance they estimated for McGwires homer was a joke. it would have went way farther than the estimate.

Oops, forgot about triple plays. That would be sweet. I couldn't imagine doing that. A double play in my softball league is always a great feeling though.

By the way, FlaWWed. In Milwaukee here, but was only 4 during summer of '82.

1. Saw my first Blue Jay game when I was 11 in 1986. Cliff Johnson hit a 2 run homer in the 9th to tie it. The next batter Buck Martinez hit one out to win it. A few years ago when Buck coached the Jays I got the chance to meet him and tell him this moment created my lifelong (at that point) love of baseball.

Box Score: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TO...198606140.shtml

2. Saw Clemens reach 3000 Ks.

3. In the season finale of Roy Halladay's rookie campaign he took a no hitter to 2 outs in the 9th before giving up a homer to break it up.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TO...199809270.shtml

4. We moved to Toronto when my wife got a job here after college. I was supposed to be looking for work but went to an afternoon Jays game instead. Caught a foul ball. 8 years later it still sits in a box, the story untold (to her anyway).

5. On the downside of things I saw the As score 8 runs off Joey Hamilton in the first inning before he recorded a 2nd out.

Trot Nixon's gimpy ### hitting an inside the park home run at Fenway vs the Yankees in July 2005. In that same game Ortiz launched a Grand Slam that landed about 15 rows in front of me.

The Sox went on to beat the yankees 17-1.... for the second time that year.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds...instant_replay/
Speaking of gimpy Red Sox and inside the park home runs, I was at a game where Bill Buckner hit an inside the park homer for the Sox at Fenway(after he left the team and then came back the second time in 1990).

I've barely missed out on some of the most historic Yankee Stadium moments of all-time by a matter of one day several times. Kinda long, but whatever...that's what I'm known for.

--Was supposed to go to Game 6 or Game 7 of the 1996 World Series. My cousin had an extra ticket to each game, and his buddy opted for the Game 6 ticket. As we know, there was no Game 7.

--My mom had two tickets to the Yankee game against the Mariners, but I turned it down because my Knicks were a game away from elimination against the Bulls and I wanted to watch them live. So my dad (a non-Yankee fan) went to see Doc Gooden's no-hitter with her instead. :wall:

--Friends and I were supposed to go to a game on a sunny Sunday afternoon in May of 1998, but my cousin was graduating college. So we opted to wait and go that Tuesday instead, and in the process missed David Wells' perfect game. :wall:

--The following summer I was at a wedding with a live band that played "New York, New York". My brother in law and I simultaneously said "Yankee game tomorrow?". So it was planned, but I accidentally set my alarm for 10:30 p.m. After coming downstairs at 12:50, we decided to not go obviously. And so we missed Cone's perfecto. :wall:

--I also played in two games in 8th grade that were near no-hitters. One was called on account of darkness, and one was broken up with 2 outs in the 7th inning. :wall:

--I had tickets to one of the three home games in the 2001 WS. Was it the Tino/Jeter game? Was it the Brosius game? Nope, it was the "other" game. :wall:

--Missed Soriano's walk-off against Kaz Sasaki by one game. I went the day before, when they got destroyed. :wall:

Because of all the missed no-hitters, I've made it something of a personal goal to see at least one live in my life. The closest I've ever come was at a game at RFK back in 2005 when Esteban Loaiza took one into the 6th against the Pirates. I also left my house during the 6th inning of a game Clemens was tossing a no-no against the A's back in 2001 or 2002. We got about a mile from the George Washington Bridge when Ben Grieve doubled to break it up, so we turned around and came back home. :bag:

Now before you think I'm some sort of jinx, I was at the Jim Leyritz walk-off HR against the Mariners in the 1995 ALDS (first and only time I ever saw Donnie hit one out...his last career HR to boot). After missing the Wells perfecto, we went Tuesday to see Yanks/O's and it turned out to be the Benitez/Strawberry/Graeme Lloyd fight game. Pretty great on its own. I also witnessed two other brawls, one between the Mets and Padres (Davey Johnson's last game as manager) that was sparked by Kevin Elster of all people. And I saw the Yanks/Blue Jays brawl where Hideki Irabu charged the plate. So three brawls I guess is pretty rare. :boxing:

I was at Game 3 of the 2001 WS where Bush threw out the first pitch. Don't love the man now, but it was still a cool moment I'll never forget. Also got to see Clemens win his 300th game/4,000th K in 2003 and Giambi's walk-off grannie against the Twins in 2002. And my personal record in Yankee playoff games is impeccable. Since 2003, they're 5-0 in games we've gone to in the postseason. We need to start going to more!

I've seen too many grand slams to count (Matsui's opening day shot in 2003 and A-Rod's last year against the Mets are two that stand out), but the first I ever saw was Bernie Williams back in the late 90's at a game with my dad.

Apparently the later it gets, the more smiley-happy I become. Sorry about that.

Cool, those both remind me of more stories.I was at a Mets/Phillies game in field level seats. Dale Murphy was taking BP and hit a screamer down the 3B line. I reached over the rail with my glove and picked it on a carom off the wall. Murphy signed the ball, and I was a happy kid.Couple years later, my dad takes me to a late-season Yanks/Jays game (when Toronto was awesome and the Yanks were no good, I believe 1992). We buy box seats off a scalper and sit a bit to the left of the screen behind home plate -- awesome seats. So some guy shows up and tells us we're in his seats, but we're already set up so he'll just find other seats. Not ten minutes later, Robbie Alomar fouls one straight back towards my brother. He was ducking to get a sandwich on the ground, otherwise he might've lost his face. The ball bounces off the seat behind us and we're scattering around looking for it. My dad reaches down into his duffle bag and comes up with the ball, which had landed in a pocket not more than 8 inches wide. To comment on your #5 item...I went to Fenway with some friends for the first time back in late June of 1999. We were all excited because we had bought the tickets back in April, not knowing who was pitching. And we realized that week that it'd be the great Pedro. Unfortunately, the Red Sox offense went ape #### and put up 11 runs in the first inning. After sitting through 98 degree heat in the CF bleachers (you Sox fans know how bad that is), we got the great privilege of seeing Pedro toss a whole FIVE innings and the Red Sox win 17-1. And to make it worse, I had a Yankee hat on as they made the announcement that Nomar had passed Jeter in all-star voting. The bleachers were unkind to me on that day. :lmao:

I was at Derek Lowe's no hitter vs Tampa Bay on April 27th, 2002 with my son.

I was my son's first baseball game at Fenway. He was 7 at the time. And it was "Kid's Opening Day" at the Park. Walking up the ramp in Fenway and seeing the Green Monster first is a great sight. and Fenway Franks too!

A friend had season tickets and I told her any time she can't use them I'll buy them from her.

She knew I had a son and thought I might like to bring him that day since she couldn't make it and she said "hey it's against Tampa so I won't miss much anyway." :bye:

Great seats about 20 rows behing the Sox bench. Around the 5th inning we said he's got a no hitter going. The buzz in the Park keep getting louder and louder each inning. The electricity was awesome! The final out everyone exploded! :excited:

To top it off, because it was Kid's Opening Day, all the kids got to run the bases at the end of the game. He, nor I, will ever forget that day. What a first game for him to see.

Top 4 baseball thrills (in order of occurrence) I was at:

Willie Stargell hitting a home run over the roof at Forbes Field.

First World Series night game ever (Pirates 1971).

Almost seeing Clemente's 3000th (and last) hit (went the night before--Clemente had an infield dribbler that the 2nd baseman bobbled and it was ruled an error rahter than a hit).

Cordova/Rincon combined 10-inning no-hitter (first in MLB history).

Was at the last game of Cal Ripken's streak, by complete happenstance of course. He sat out the next day.

 That's about it.

I was at Camden Yards for Wilson Alarez's Major League debut when he no-hit the Orioles. The fans gave him quite an ovation after the game.

On a trip to Cleveland in 1990, I saw Dave Stieb no-hit the Indians. Was pretty cool, but I think the fan excitement would have been better if it was a HOME no-hitter.

saw the no-no the Astro's pulled on the Yankees a couple of years ago with three pitchers...no one in the stadium even knew it was happening until the 9th.
I was there as well. I think it was five pitchers too, which added to the weirdness of it all.I was also at the Aaron Boone game. Best finish in Yankee Stadium history.

My dad and I once ran out onto the field and bet the living chit out of 1st base coach.

:)

Kiddin

I still wish a ball player would have suplexed one of the Aholes

I was at the 1995 Yankees/Mariners game

Before the Yankees starting winning.

Game 2

Everyone figured this was Mattingly's last year, he hits a homerun in this game and is having an amazing postseason.

Bottom of the 15th, in the middle of the rain, it must have been almost midnight.

Leyritz hits an opposite field walk off home run.

I thought the upper deck was gonna collapse.

That's cool except that it wasn't his debut.
 I did not know that. Through further research, it was his second game and first with the White Sox. In his first game he faced 5 batters and did not record an out. Close enough I guess.

I was at Len Barker's perfect game in 1981 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium vs Toronto. I still can't believe that performance...it was totally unexpected from him.

I was at the Phils-Yanks game last year, sitting in 2nd level in Rt center. Ryan Howard comes up and hits the ball into the THIRD level in Rt. It was amazing seeing the ball carry above us. Absolute monster shot.

Saw Jim Thome hit his 400th Home run

Lenny Dykstra inside the park homerun against the Mets in the ealry 90's was cool. Standing O and chants of Lenny Lenny Lenny! good times

I was at the game in Arlington...old ball park...that saw R. Johnson strike out 18 Rangers. I am pretty sure Ryan either started and left that game early or warmed up and could not make the start. It was a late season game and the park was nearly empty. If memory serves, Johnson and the Mariners manager at the time (B. Plummer) got in a nasty on field fight in Johnson's previous start.

As to get back at Johnson for showing him up on the field, Plummer pulled Johnson either in the 7th or 8th and did not let him finish out the game; fight for the win or attempt to break the record for strike outs in a game.

Tell us also about, how it was watching Moses walking down the mountain with the 10 commandments:)Serioulsy, those are some gems

While on a trip to San Francisco, I attended the game where Bonds hit HR #715. Besides the atmosphere of such a historic home run, it's amazing to see how beloved Bonds is in San Francisco when the rest of the world hates him.

On a lesser note, I was a Mets game last summer (I think it was against the Diamondbacks), where the friggin' PITCHER hit a grand slam against Jose Lima! Sorry I can't remember who it was (I've kind of blocked it out of my head!)

Yup, still the most excited I've ever been at a baseball game. I was in the back row of the LF bleachers and on one of the replays you can see the giant Snapple billboard out in our section is missing the "R" in the words "Real Brewed". That's because we punched the #### out of it after the Mattingly HR and broke it.

I saw John Valentin of the Red Sox turn an unassisted triple play. There have only been 10 unassisted triple plays in the history of baseball and I think I remember hearing that makes it the most rare occurence you can see in a game.

1st and 2nd, no outs. Both runners were off with the pitch. Line drive up the middle. Valentin catches it, steps on 2nd forcing the runner previously on 2nd, then tags the runner that was on his way from 1st to 2nd.

Boxscore

Went to the Red Sox/Tigers game three years ago where 12 HRs were hit breaking the record. The guy I went with went to the game that held the previous record of 11 - White Sox/Tigers.

Turned down a ticket to the Kerry Wood 20 strikeout game. The people I would have went with got their picture in SI from that game.

Have caught 13 foul balls/HR's.

1. Was at Derek Lowe's no-hitter in 2002. Out in the bleachers. I was pretty loaded (bachelor party) and by the time the 7th came around, I knew there was a no hitter and stopped drinking trying to sober up.....

2. I was at the Yankees/Sox game on a Sunday night when Yankee pitcher almost threw a no-no. I think Carl Everett broke it up in the 9th. I think it was Mussina pitching for the Yanks and Cone for the Sox.

3. I was at the game (12 rows behind home plate) when Carl Everett went ballistic and head butted the umpire!

4. I was at Fenway for Game 1 of World Series in 2004. Also for the clinching game against the A's that same year. I had tickets to the Yankees/Red Sox game when Pedro threw Zimmer to the ground. It was a Saturday afternoon and I was in a wedding, so I couldn't go.

5. I was at Fenway when Bryce Florie got hit in the face by a liner back up the mound.

6. I was at Shea Stadium when McGwire hit #50 and 51 during a doubleheader against the Mets in 1998.

7. I was at Fenway when Roger Clemens returned as a Blue Jay. He pitched a gem (something like 15 K's.) Day game.

Two from the many games I saw growing up in KC...

-George Brett's last game @ home in September 29, 1993. I was sitting right above home plate, where after the game, he took a lap around the diamond and bent down to kiss home plate. I say sitting above, because I was in section 400...as high as you can go @ Kaufman/Royals Stadium. I remember him getting a hit in his last AB and getting lifted for a PR and the buzz in that stadium was deafening at that moment.

-8/8/87 Kevin Seitzer, as a rookie no less, goes 6-for-6 with 7 RBI vs. BOS. That was about the high point of his career.....

September 2nd, 2001. It was Mussina, and Everett did break it up, but it wasn't just a no-no he had going. Mussina had a perfect game going. Everett was the 27th batter to come to the plate and he hit a single with two strikes in the count...one pitch away from perfect!

Saw Nomo no-hit the Orioles a few years back, when he was a Red Sock. I'm a big O's fan but was rooting for him, because that's just cool to watch. About 75% of the fans were cheering... That's before they won a World Series and thusly, before I hated the Red Sox.

Also went to Cal Ripken's last game. Didn't have tix, but spent 3 hours before the game just looking for someone with extra tickets for cheap. Found a woman who didn't seem to know the significance who had 2 extras together for $20 each. I coulda sold those for about $200 each, but wouldn't trade that memory for $1000.

As for grand slams, I feel like I've seen a few of those. I wouldn't call them common, but they don't seem rare, do they?
