Woman gets 100 cat calls in 10 hours in NYC (1 Viewer)

Anyone, man or woman, who believes that the men in this video were just being friendly and well intentioned and complimentary is certainly entitled to that opinion.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say their intentions were to have sex with her.

Do you not have a penis?
A lot of drama here over nothing. An average women can walk around and get hit on by a hundred guys. The one dude following her for a while was borderline harrassment, the other guys were just throwing out compliments and were fairly polite about it. This really constitutes harrassment?
That's kind of the point.

In a bar, probably to be expected.

Just walking down the street?

That's over the line, Smokey.
Why? Like others have said, the guy walking beside her so close for so long was over the line. But by the reaction of other women, the innocuous comments are not universally considered harassment. Have we really reached the point where just saying something to someone else on the street is harassment?
Sure, and as pointed out, plenty of women defended Ray Rice. My friend posted this on FB and out of about 100 responses, I'd say about 95% of them sympathized with her.

And fwiw, I don't think anyone just saying "hey" would be considered to be harassing. The problem arises when they say "hey" hoping that she's interested and when she ignores them they get hostile. It's freaking NYC. People are busy, there are like a trillion people in NYC and she doesn't freaking know these guys. She has no obligation to respond to them. My bet is that if she did, they wouldn't just let it go and let her keep walking without making further comments. They're not being polite, they're hitting on her and by not responding she is letting them know she's not interested.

The problem is that a lot of guys look at this and view it as a one off experiment. The reality is that when we see a couple of the guys being really creepy, we see it as just being a small minority and so perceive it as not happening very often. But it wasn't like she was inviting that behavior in any way or doing something different than most women do every day. So the likelihood is that women are dealing with creepy guys like that quite often. And for a woman, she has to wonder which one of those guys might be brazen enough to sexually assault her. Dealing with that behavior day after day after day has to be annoying at the very least.
The majority of guys just said "Hey" or "Hey, beautiful" or "How you doin?" without any follow up whatsoever. Yet all were classified as harassment.
They should make another shirt with " 'Hey' is no way to say Hi"

Part of statement today on the Hollaback website addressing the racial aspects of the video:

First, we regret the unintended racial bias in the editing of the video that over represents men of color. Although we appreciate Rob’s support, we are committed to showing the complete picture. It is our hope and intention that this video will be the start of a series to demonstrate that the type of harassment we’re concerned about is directed toward women of all races and ethnicities and conducted by an equally diverse population of men.

Hollaback! understands that harassment is a broad problem perpetuated by a diversity of individuals regardless of race. There is no one profile for a harasser and harassment comes in many different forms. Check out our Harassment Is: Identities and Street Harassment guide on how individuals experience harassment differently. This video should have done a better job of representing this knowledge.

There are many more voices to add to this conversation and Hollaback! is committed to continuing to make space for those voices by providing platforms and amplification of people sharing their stories and finding ways to push back.

OMG what a stupid ####### world we live in. This ^^ perfectly illustrates why I am a misanthrope.

Let me know when they apologize for putting that stupid Gwen Stefani song in my head.

They also say, "It’s important to keep in mind that is this video only captures verbal harassment, and Rob and Shoshana can attest to the harassment overall falling evenly along race and class lines."

It's obvious they focus on the verbal harassment because that is the kind most likely to garner support. And the suggestion here is that the numbers would even out if they included nonverbal harassment as well. The problem is, one of the two parts of the video that are most likely to be considered harassment is nonverbal - the guy creepily walking next to her. So it's not really that they weren't focused on nonverbal harassment, but just that most of the nonverbal actions they could have included were less obviously harassment than anything they did include.

Well to prove their point they need to have her walk around and gather the video evidence of all the equal harassment she gets from whites and asians.

What a bunch of ####### ninnies.

Only an idiot would think this was racist!!!

Apparently any revelation of fault or poor behavior that does not exactly conform to overall US population racial demographics is racist.

Am I the only one that thinks it's total bull#### that this hookah walked around for 10 hours? She would have walked like 40 miles! :grad:

I too find that a little unbelievable, but it does not say 10 hours in a single day does it?
I suppose they don't but that's sorta how the video is represented.

ETA: This is what is says from the video caption:

One woman filmed the incessant harassment she received on the streets of New York City over a ten-hour period.

Sound like the same day to me.

Woman Gets Offered Drinks At Local Bar

A friend of mine who runs a feminist blog just described being "harassed" while putting air in her tire. Anyone want to guess at the nature of this harassment?

Not sure what or who I'm more offended by on this damned thing.

The ultra feminists who think it's harassment for a guy to say, "Hi" or the idiots who try to paint this as racist.

Where to begin...so, if a guy never approaches a woman...what are we left with? Women have to approach men? Wouldn't THAT be sexual harassment from them?

Next time a woman says "Hi" or "Good Morning"...scream back at her that you will not tolerate her sexual abuse!

Now for the racist nonsense...so, I guess because this video shows mostly black dudes saying anything to her...it's not fair. My God...how do you even attempt to deal with this sort of thinking? Does she have to edit it to the point where it's equal representation of all the races? Damn...it's getting so old...trotting out racism at every opportunity. What about the fact that it's all men in this video? Isn't that sexism?

WHERE'S MY DAMNED APOLOGY, HEIFER?!

Did you never have a female role model?

Maybe that's the wrong word. Matriarch?

Honestly I love laughing at this ####. My wife gets pissed at me when I do so thank God for this board. A guy at the snack bar at my kids soccer game complimented my coat and I told her I had just been harassed.

We then had a back and forth about what constitutes harassment in terms of commenting on appearance.

Her: If someone tells me my outfit makes me look beautiful then that is not harassment, but if they look me up and down and then say "hey, you look good in that outfit" then that is harassment.

Me: what about this? (I briefly look at her legs and then back at her face) "Nice jeans" (spoken just a hair slower than normal)

Her: Yes.

Me: (I more briefly look at her legs and then back at her face) "Nice jeans" (at normal voice pace)

Her: No.

Me: And you don't see how that could be confusing?

Anyway, one more reason to simply start ignoring women completely. Maybe it's because I'm old and married and I don't get hardons every 20 seconds anymore but to me, this kinda crap just is not worth putting up with. So just stop commenting on women's appearance completely.

As for myself, I am making a concerted effort to stop looking at women as sexual beings at all. Its not all that hard actually. At least until you start watching TV. But in terms of real people who might feel "harassed" or "threatened" by my glances, words, or mere presence, I think this will be effective at least in removing myself from being part of the problem.

I'm only in day 2 of concerted efforts, but thus far it feels very liberating.
