World Cup is almost here. I'm always interested in what people are interested in.

I know the World Cup is a huge event. Please don't turn this thread into that. What I'm interested in here is what YOU think. There aren't any right or wrong answers.

So let's hear it. What's you're interest level in the upcoming World Cup?

J

Not a huge soccer fan, but make a point to watch as much of the World Cup as possible. One of the better events in sports.

I've decamped for Rio over the summer. Huge deal for me and trying (so far unsuccessfully) to get some tickets...

About the only soccer I watch is the European Championships and the World Cup.

I voted very interested. Anytime you have the greatest athletes of any sport competing for their countries it is enjoyable to me.

I also have a good buddy who is a soccer nut, so I usually watch a few games with him and really enjoy it because just watching him react is exciting. NTTAWWT.

I'll casually watch. If nothings on, I might tune in but then if channel flipping and Point Break or something shows up, I'd lose interest.

What is this world cup soccer you speak of?

Seriously, unless the US somehow makes some noise, won't give it a bit of attention. Maybe post some pictures of the hot Brazilian spectators.

Big fan.

It would have been interesting to see this exact poll in 2006 and 2010. I bet you would see a nice growth curve.

I wish we had better events in the US.
We were the rational, logical choice for the 2022 World Cup, but Qatar bribed their way into it and are now killing literally thousands of workers/indentured servants trying to build massive stadiums that are really only going to be needed for about a month. Neat place.

Big fan.

A lot of hard core soccer guys would probably call me a bandwagon soccer fan but I don't really care. I don't watch MLS, watch Euro league matches rarely, but love international soccer. I follow the USMNT passively leading up to the WC, watch friendlies and qualifiers, etc, and then I'm all in for the WC. I watch matches with countries that I don't care about just because of how awesome it is. If the WC is held in some crazy timezone I'll be up at 3 AM watching Armenia vs. Croatia or some crap. It's that good imo.

Pretty stoked that it's in a normal set of timezones this go 'round.

Now thats leadership.
Add every bad piece of leadership in all US based sports, including the college mess, multiply it by 10 and FIFA still laughs at how far ahead they are at sucking.

We've been hearing that for years. After the US gets thumped in round one, soccer will disappeared into oblivion for another four years. Only 26k showed up for the US match in SF last night. Until our best athletes start playing at the highest level, there's a limited ceiling for soccer in the US.

Voted very interested. I wish the second round would also be group play or they could figure out a way to make the later portion of the tourney closer to a series.

I'd say moderately interested. I always want to get into it but it's usually a letdown. The buzz around the game is much better than the game itself.

Soccer ratings (MLS and Euros) have been climbing pretty steadily, actually. I agree that the US having a second-tier domestic league does hamper things, but I also wouldn't say that soccer disappears into Bolivian either.

Posted this in the official thread, but I was at the game last night, and Candlestick is an awful venue. For anything. Everyone hates it, and it was a school night. If you're going to use attendance as a barometer, the game this weekend is probably a more fair indicator.

I am moderately interested. I am considering starting up a pool with 7 friends to randomly draw groups A-H. Maybe that will help increase interest.

At the end of the day, it is soccer, however you frame it... On top of that, USA isn't very good. I won't go out of my way to watch, but I'll become more interested if USA plays well.

You think the sport as a whole is at the same level of popularity today as it was 8 years ago?

Interesting. The facts (attendance and tv ratings) don't appear to support your theory.
I think there's more access now than then. Average and hardcore fan now have viewing options. I really believe the demand was there to some extent all along. I think you could say the same about several sports. Soccer fans have really benefitted from the explosive growth of sports networks and their need for programming.

Off course there's growth due to population increases and demographic changes in the US. IMO the Mexican national team outdraws team USA in most venues in the US.

Considering how massive 2016 is going to be, anyone who thinks the sport will diminish until 2018 is going to be shocked.

And I know you mentioned MLS and Euro (mostly EPL) ratings but we all know that even those are trumped by the Mexican league tv ratings. The amount of people watching soccer week in and week out is pretty impressive.

Still a long way to go but anyone who does not see the growth really needs to take a look. The growth in MLS itself from a league half dead 8 years ago to the thriving (relative) one today is pretty amazing.

I have seen good arguments made that the Mexican National Team might be the single most popular team in the country of any sport.

To be fair how many would show up in SF on a Tuesday for a football game between the Arizona Cardinals v University of Wyoming just for an exhibition with nothing on the line? - because that is about the equivalent of last nights affair.

The poll results are pretty shocking.

If this poll was held in 2006, I bet the numbers for the first 2 poll choices would have combined in the 15-20% range. I remember back then people even laughing that we wanted to start a soccer thread here.

Probably a lot because the NFL would have forced you to buy the tickets.

Seriously, a chance to see team USA with it's actually world cup roster on home soil before they head to Brazil should be a hotter ticket if soccer was seriously growing.

Extremely interested. Have become much more interested in soccer than baseball or basketball over the last few years.

Being in the group of death with some brutal travel (think the worst out of any team) will make it quite an accomplishment to get out of group play but am hopeful they can get the 2nd group slot after Germany.

i went to usa v Mexico a month or so back and university of Phoenix stadium drew a really big crowd. I am sure you could find a Jacksonville jaguars preseason game that would draw less than that did.

The people paying for MLS teams certainly don't appear to believe it's on the brink of oblivion. Would love to see a simple line graph with the price of the last X MLS team/franchise purchases.
